Hi,
Not even sure why I’m posting, just in case someone can help.
I have my NHS dentist (been with him for almost 10 years) who is absolutely brilliant and never had any issues with my teeth other than the odd filling, but no issues with the layout or structure of them. However I was also at a private dentist during the in between lockdowns when dentists could open but the NHS check up backlog was so long, so I went to a private dentist to get a check up. He was fab too, however he pointed out so many issues with my teeth and gave me a quotation of around 5k (bleaching, composite bonds and some kind of brace too), ever since then I’ve absolutely hated my teeth. He pointed out that I have a huge overbite or overjet (can’t remember exactly which one) and something to do with the layout of my bottom jaw being too far back and I could get surgery if I wanted to fix it. I said I’d never noticed it and he said if I take some side profile pictures I’ll see it. So I did, and ever since then, I’ve hated my face. My bottom jaw is so far behind my top jaw it looks awful. And when I smile it looks like my teeth are projecting forwards and sticking out. He said it’s a combination of 25 years worth of nail biting and just the layout of my jaw.

I had train tracks as a teen for the straightness and I’m fine with the straightness of my teeth now, but now I absolutely despise my face because of how ridiculous it looks having my jaw that far back and my teeth sticking out, it looks like I’ve got buck teeth. I don’t want to get surgery on my jaw either but ever since he said that I’ve never got it out of my head. Looking at my side profile, does it look so far from normal? Is it completely obvious that my bottom jaw is really far back and my top teeth stick out? When I went back to my NHS dentist and told him he was appalled and said it’s slightly lower back but not awfully so and he would never have flagged it as a problem, and obviously I trust him, but it’s so hard to stop feeling self conscious about it now

Your teeth look great. Ignore!!! Please!

ChristmasPuddingFace · 02/11/2023 17:27

Bloody hell!

I was looking at £4K to get teeth like yours but they never would be so I've not done it!

Your teeth are gorgeous.

Mine are crowded and I'd need extractions and a traditional brace for 18 months. I'm not bothering at the moment.

happyl · 02/11/2023 17:27

amazing teeth and a really pretty smile, is what I'm seeing.

cestlavielife · 02/11/2023 17:28

Overbite is the term for the amount that the upper front teeth vertically overlap the lower front teeth. A little bit of an overbite is completely normal. If the upper front teeth didn’t slightly overlap the bottom teeth, they would hit each other whenever you bit down, leading to premature wear of the enamel. A complete lack of an overbite is actually its own problem, called an open bite.

CocoPlum · 02/11/2023 17:29

Your teeth look like you should be in a toothpaste ad, you have a beautiful smile and gorgeous skin and NOT an overbite.

AllllTheQuestions · 02/11/2023 17:29

I was expecting a shit show. Your teeth are lovely OP!

Taxbreaks · 02/11/2023 17:29

@Teethproblems Speaking as one of those whose teeth were vandalised for profit by NHS dentists in the 1970s, you have fabulous teeth.
A friend was told by the dental surgeon he uses in an Eastern European country that dentists across the channel have long considered the scandalous treatment we received (often two fillings per tooth on different faces to maximise fees) to be deserved because we don't make our feelings known to the authorities as strongly as the gilets jaunes or Dutch farmers.

Goldbar31 · 02/11/2023 17:29

Your teeth are genuinely really nice and your profile looks good!

newnamethanks · 02/11/2023 17:31

Dont listen to the rip off merchant OP, your teeth look lovely, anyone would be proud to have them. They're fine.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 02/11/2023 17:31

I would literally kill for your teeth, they're perfect! Really white and straight.

Alot of people find a small jawline attractive in a woman. I have a similar chin and it has never held me back!

Lifeomars · 02/11/2023 17:31

your teeth are lovely, the dentist is just trying to get you to spend an unnecessary small fortune on work you don't need.

Bizjustgotreal · 02/11/2023 17:33

Blimey you should do modelling!

PurpleWisteria1 · 02/11/2023 17:35

You have a slight over bite but your smile looks lovely- nothing wrong anyone would notice. Straight teeth- many people would love to have your smile!
I have had experiences with private dentists insisting I need things that when I visit an NHS dentist it’s clear I don’t need them. Just to make money.
Honestly if you had come to him to say - I need my overbite correcting then I can understand it but to make you feel crap is awful.
Be confident and proud - your smily
is beautiful and it’s what makes you you!

My private dentist who I saw for a think a bridge and implant work wanted me to get them bleached. I didn’t want to get them bleached. Then he tried to suggest I needed work/braces for my overcrowded bottom teeth which I admit could be fixed but I really hate the idea of any work being done to them.

A private dentist will sell you anything. If they can sell Botox treatments at some practices then that says it all to me, and I avoid.

If a private dentist saw my teeth I think they would suggest chopping my head off and transplanting a new one! I have terrible teeth, two have been taken out which makes me reluctant to smile, one of the lower front ones crosses over very slightly, my once small gap between the two upper front ones has got much bigger as I have aged. They are no longer white, again this is part of the wonderful ageing process. It would take thousands to sort my teeth out and as I am not well off plus deeply ashamed of my mouth and terrified of dentists, it is not going to happen.

Your teeth are perfectly fine.

in fact, I had to reread your post because I thought you had gotten the ‘repairs’ done and were not happy with the result.

Mustreadabook · 02/11/2023 17:40

Your teeth look fine! I was expecting some crazy overbite! My teeth line up when I closed my mouth and. I assumed they were supposed to do that, but my dentist says that the front teeth should be in front of the back teeth like yours are! They are just trying to make money.

WhatWhereWhenHowWhy · 02/11/2023 17:41

I never usually post pics but just to strengthen what others are saying...sometimes dentists are hyper focused on things that aren't such a big issue in the grand scheme of things.

My dentist told me I really should have teeth whitening and my gap closing 😳 I don't see any major issue with my teeth so it's gone over my head.

Your teeth and smile are lovely!

I’ll swap with you any day. 😃
The private dentist was thinking ker-ching every time he suggested something.

mintich · 02/11/2023 17:42

Your teeth are amazing! This dentist is definitely after your money.

katsusando · 02/11/2023 17:42

Absolutely nothing wrong with your teeth or jaw line but it is absolutely in the private dentist's best interests to get you to think about having more work done with him - it's how they make their money.

I have been to a few private dentists and the easiest way to root out the one's in it for the money is those who insist I need x, y and/or z done.

VWdieselnightmare · 02/11/2023 17:46

I have ordinary, unremarkable teeth: straight, nothing obviously wrong with them. People admired them and said how lucky I was. Then I moved and had to go private and since then every bloody visit is spent trying to upsell me and sign me up to thousands of pounds worth of work. This is how advertising works on you psychologically. It makes you unhappy with what you have. You start to believe that your reliable five-year-old car isn't good enough and you need to upgrade to something you really can't afford in order to be okay. You're okay as you are. Your teeth are probably fine.

Private doctors and dentists make their millions by persuading people to have treatments they don't need. Grow some psychological armour. I now walk into the dentist and say 'I've come for a check-up and a clean and I don't want to hear a word about cosmetic treatments.'

VWdieselnightmare · 02/11/2023 17:48

Just saw the photos. Beautiful teeth. You look like you. Why would you have surgery in order to look like some dentist's weird idea of perfection?

Teethproblems · 02/11/2023 15:59

Think the pictures are working now. I’m happy with my teeth from the front- it’s just the side profile I absolutely hate now. It’s crazy because it’s not something I would have ever noticed before but now I’m paranoid about how it looks.

I knew I had a small jaw (i was told this when I got my train tracks) and I’ve got TMJ (my jaw cracks everytime it opens) but I didn’t realise quite how big the overbite/overjet is. Apparently it would need surgery and then braces afterwards to properly fix/align and I really don’t want that but I’m so paranoid of my smile and my face from the side now.

and although I’m happy with them from the front, Another thing he pointed out is that from the front my top and bottom jaw don’t seem to align or something like that because the middle of my top teeth isn’t in line with the bottom teeth, although this doesn’t bother me as much as the overbite/overjet thing

They look fine.

Londontown12 · 02/11/2023 17:49

U look beaut from those pics to me and your teeth are lovely !! Please please don’t ever go back to that private dentist !!!! He did a number on you x
