AIBU to keep all my condiments in fridge

Hi, AIBU to keep all my condiments in the fridge once opened, what does everyone else do? As they seem to take up huge amounts of space…

I think you and my DH would get on. We have a big American style fridge with TWO 'pickle shelves'. It drives me insane.

Autiebibliophile · 01/11/2023 21:32

Like mustard, ketchup etc? I keep all mine in the fridge. You are supposed to. I also write the date I opened them on the label as the use bys vary massively. Some are only a few weeks

Hermittrismegistus · 01/11/2023 21:34

YABU, the fridge makes condiments too cold. I keep mine in the cupboard.

Manadou · 01/11/2023 21:34

I look at the label, if it says 'keep refrigerated', in it goes. If not, it doesn't.

Blanketpolicy · 01/11/2023 21:38

I like to keep mayo in the fridge and dh likes jam in there (I would just have it in the cupboard). Half jars of things like Cranberry sauce go in there too so they last longer, but pickles, ketchups, brown sauce, mustard, beetroot all go in the cupboard.

Manadou · 01/11/2023 21:40

Honey goes like concrete in the fridge.

Anoisagusaris · 01/11/2023 21:41

We have a mini fridge in utility room just for condiments 😆 Stuff used daily like jam and mayo are in the main fridge but DH is always buying condiments so we have an overflow fridge.

PeloMom · 01/11/2023 21:41

You’re supposed to right? Even things like peanut butter say refrigerate after opening.

Me too. Hate cold sauce!

Butchyrestingface · 01/11/2023 21:51

I keep my condiments in the fridge from when I buy them. Pay no heed to the barbarians, OP.

I personally like to engage some critical thinking. Commercial pickled onions say to keep refrigerated once open. It's a sodding pickled onion. The whole point of pickles is to preserve things in a way that doesn't require refrigeration... (and don't start me on added sugar in pickled onions which is frankly a crime against humanity as far as I'm concerned - not that sugar in the vinegar will affect the longevity). Likewise beetroot, gherkins, branston style pickles, piccalilli etc.

Also mustard having just checked. Keep refrigerated and consume within 4 weeks - the stuff lasts for bastard years in the cupboard (well not in my cupboards as I love mustards - currently have 8 different types).

Some low acid/sugar relishes etc. will last better in a fridge, but the whole point of many condiments is their preserve nature.

i love the idea of an overflow small fridge elsewhere but we don’t have the space in our compact kitchen, having read some of these replies though I am going to consider removing the mustard and Branson pickle etc. Any suggestions for things that absolutely should be kept in the fridge -I feel like mayo and ketchup should stay?

I keep ketchup and mayo in da fridge. Salad cream in a cupboard. Pickles and such are not an option in this house.

itsmylife7 · 01/11/2023 22:40

I only keep mayonnaise in the fridge. I've just used the last of my French mustard that's been opened for 5 months, and it was perfect.

HeddaGarbled · 01/11/2023 22:43

Top shelf of my fridge is pretty much dedicated to part-used jars.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/11/2023 22:47

Ketchup, honey and mustard in the cupboard.

Salad cream, mayo and lemon curd in the fridge.

Blanketpolicy · 01/11/2023 22:55

Cold ketchup on chips is not nice. Definitely one for the cupboard.

jc12689 · 02/11/2023 07:52

The smaller door shelf isn't much use for anything else so all our condiments stay in the fridge.

Poudretteite · 02/11/2023 07:55

I can't believe people keep open condiments in the cupboard!! Don't they go off? All mine go in the fridge.

Doesn't peanut butter go solid in the fridge?

No, they don't go off. They're so full of preservatives.

muddyford · 02/11/2023 07:58

Only mayonnaise in the fridge. Everything else should be preserved at room temperature with vinegar, oil, salt or sugar.

I suppose you do see condiments on the table at restaurants. Doesn't feel right to me though!

Not the ones i use say that, just cool and dry place. They would go horrible in fridge

theduchessofspork · 02/11/2023 08:14

I keep mayonnaise in the fridge, but things like ketchup, jam and pickles don’t need to be.

Fridge space is prime real estate!
