Hi, AIBU to keep all my condiments in the fridge once opened, what does everyone else do? As they seem to take up huge amounts of space…

I can't believe people keep open condiments in the cupboard!! Don't they go off? All mine go in the fridge.

No, they are full of either vinegar or sugar. No need for the fridge (other than for things like mayo)

BitofaStramash · 02/11/2023 08:16

Once opened - in the fridge.

Except for tomato ketchup and HP sauce. I don't bother with them. They stay in the cupboard

Sartre · 02/11/2023 08:16

I keep them all in the fridge because it says you should on the label. I didn’t used to because my Mum always kept them in the cupboard but then I actually read the labels and thought I better listen to it.

gotomomo · 02/11/2023 08:17

Fridge here, means they last longer once opened

Good grief no!! Don't think they'd ever go off! They're stuffed full of all sorts of additives!

Even shop bought mayo doesn't go off.

If it make Mayo myself I tend to put it in the fridge, but TBH it's eaten pretty damn quick so don't know how quick it would go off.

gotomomo · 02/11/2023 08:19

And I write the date opened on the labels, I don't stick to the 4 weeks exactly but I can then discard when I get concerned

Tourmalines · 02/11/2023 08:24

Fridge ! Mostly every condiment in the fridge. But not honey or peanut butter

McT123 · 02/11/2023 08:28

Ketchup will ferment if left out for a long time in high temperatures but it is not dangerous - just a bit fizzy. If you don't use it quickly, it's worth refrigerating in the summer.

Brown sauce, pickles, mustard - no need to keep them in the fridge. The labels and use by dates are just to cover the manufacturers' backs.

Shop-bought mayo is fine for several weeks in a cupboard but best to keep it in the fridge if you keep it for longer than that.

I would dearly love to move some of the stuff I keep in the fridge out of there.
I always thought it was because we use less preservatives nowadays?

fishonabicycle · 02/11/2023 08:48

The whole reason preserves were invented was to make fruit and veg last before we had fridges! Putting them in the fridge is just weird. Apart from mayo or maybe lemon curd as they have eggs in. Even so, they seem to last out of the fridge.

Houses were a lot colder then though, so more suitable storage temp

Tourmalines · 02/11/2023 08:54

NO! , it’s not weird to keep them in the fridge.

RedPony1 · 02/11/2023 09:44

Mayo in fridge, everything else in a cupboard.
I used 6 month old BBQ sauce last night and it was perfect!

Davros · 02/11/2023 10:21

itsmylife7 · 01/11/2023 22:40

I only keep mayonnaise in the fridge. I've just used the last of my French mustard that's been opened for 5 months, and it was perfect.

This
The risk to jam, for instance, is sticking buttery knives in, that's what caused mould. If you can be bothered, use a clean teaspoon

StarlightLady · 02/11/2023 10:23

Not voting because it’s personal choice. You are nether being reasonable or unreasonable. I keep mine in the fridge, and emergency chocolate! But if you bother to read the small print, lots of condiments state on the jars/packaging “refrigerate after opening”.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 02/11/2023 10:31

YABU Salt and Pepper don’t need to go in the fridge.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/11/2023 10:35

I do

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 02/11/2023 10:39

PeloMom · 01/11/2023 21:41

You’re supposed to right? Even things like peanut butter say refrigerate after opening.

I've got some on my desk and it says - Store in a cool, dry place.

vernatheraven · 02/11/2023 10:40

I keep all of mine in the fridge.

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 02/11/2023 10:43

Only salad cream/mayo go in the fridge here, nothing worse than fridge cold ketchup on a bacon butty

StarlightLady · 02/11/2023 10:49

And a man! Always keep a man in the fridge 😂. If you let them out, they cause chaos.

WrittenOrf · 02/11/2023 10:55

Stuff only lasts if you don’t pop the lid when you open it - mould can set in if it’s not a proper seal. I have a very wide shelf full of opened jars which drives DH mad lol. Jams, marmalades, chutneys, pickles, sauces, jellies, mustards. Also a shelf in the fridge door 😂.

Currently have
Ketchup
Mayo
Branston
Apple jelly
Berry jam
2 types of marmalade
Sweet chilli sauce
Oyster sauce
Teriyaki sauce
Ponzu sauce
Grape jelly
Sriracha
Tabasco
Harissa paste
Lazy ginger
Anchovies
Lemongrass paste
Caesar dressing
Burger sauce
HP sauce
BBQ sauce
Mango chutney
Tartare sauce
Mustard x 3 types
Cranberry jelly
Redcurrant jelly
Avocado vinaigrette
Miso paste
Chipotle paste
Hoisin sauce
Preserved lemons

Yes for sure. Scrunch them up in the salad drawer.

You're a psychopath, OP. HTH.
