Go in for training on annual leave

Princesspollyyy · 01/11/2023 10:02

I'm on annual leave from work this week. Manager has said in the WhatsApp group that there's mandatory training that needs to be done, and the trainers will be at work two days this week if people can pop in.

I've replied saying I'm on annual leave this week. Some other people have said they will pop in (who aren't on annual leave, just days off).

I don't feel I should have to go in on my annual leave, I'm not abroad but I'm really busy and have loads planned.

Should I go in?

hookiewookie29 · 01/11/2023 11:07

Nope.
If you were in Spain you wouldn't be able to go, just because you're at home doesn't make it any different.

letstrythatagain · 01/11/2023 11:07

No way! And I'm a trainer. I'm the pain in the butt who makes people attend mandatory training 🤣. I still say no way!

Depends on what the training is and the job. And why you took annual leave.

If you’re going to end up screwing your promotion chances/development by not going in, then suck it up.

If you took annual leave for a v. Good reason (I.e to care for a v. Sick relative) then don’t go. But if you’re sitting at home scrolling on mumsnet or just going out for coffee with friends then just go?

BUT, regardless of the above, if other people are on their days off and going in, you’re going to look bad if you don’t go. Days off are just as important as A/L and you’re demonstrating you’re less committed than they are (at least as a manager that’s how I would view it).

Absolute bull.

OP, I'm not entirely sure you are expected to attend? It was a generic WhatsApp message to everyone, you responded that you're on annual leave, manager probably looked at that and went "fair enough."

I really wouldn't give it any more thought.

This is nonsense. It's stuff like this that makes employers so powerful and employees feel powerless.

OP take your annual leave and your boss will have to suck it up and re-arrange this vital training that is so vital and mandatory they didn't have the sense the check the holiday diary.

ploymus · 01/11/2023 11:25

I wouldn't have presumed that message was aimed at me, if I was on annual leave, and would have ignored or sent a polite reminder, as you have done. I don't think the manager or you have done anything wrong.

Aquestioningmind · 01/11/2023 11:41

GuinnessBird · 01/11/2023 10:57

Christ you're a bootlicker.

People are entitled to use their annual leave for whatever reason and not expect to be called in for training.

Bit unnecessary.

All I said was if people were going in on their days off it's no different to OP going on on AL.

Catza · 01/11/2023 11:44

You need to look at your annual leave policy. I would imagine it is not required for you to attend the training and if it is, you should get a day of AL back. Practically, I am not sure how this may be enforced, surely nobody will expect you to fly over if you were indeed abroad.

Khvdrt · 01/11/2023 11:48

No you shouldn’t and next time don’t look at work messages so you can claim ignorance as you were on leave

So even though I'm currently on my annual leave, I need to try and find my annual leave policy, and then decide if I need to go to the training or not?

What about things I have paid for, booked, arranged???

Im guilty of it but this is why looking at work emails whilst on leave is a very bad idea. Ultimately you are on leave. It's been approved and work should only be contacting you for extreme emergencies. This training is not an emergency. You are on leave and have plans therefore are not able to attend, period.

You don't.

Just forget about it, seriously. Your manager is not asking you directly.

Other people going in on their days off are fools, but that's on them.

Nope, you absolutely do not.

Just carry on your holiday as planned.

Peablockfeathers · 01/11/2023 11:54

Princesspollyyy · 01/11/2023 10:23

She didn't ask in that nice way you just said. It was 'please can everyone make an effort to attend' and then when I said I was on annual leave, no specific reply to me.

That doesn't sound like she expects you in though, sounds like the team whatsapp was the quickest way to contact everyone and just so happens you saw it when you're off. If she had messaged just you or said you must come in then that's different, isn't even forcing those who are in to go!

trampoline123 · 01/11/2023 11:55

No way.

justsaying2023 · 01/11/2023 12:01

I doubt you are expected to go in if you are on annual leave, they are using mandatory to encourage/pressure those that are working from home/ out of office / on a shift day to go in as they are on work time just in a different location. Annual leave is your time and I am sure there will be information for you to peruse on your return.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/11/2023 12:07

Don't go in, you are on annual leave. A decent company would arrange duplicate training for different weeks and different days to enabje everyone to attend.

amusedbush · 01/11/2023 12:09

The first thing I do when starting annual leave is turn off notifications for all work apps. However, if I had seen a message like that while on leave I'd say (to myself!) "that sounds like a You Problem" and not give it another thought.

If the training was of critical importance, it should have been arranged on a day when everyone is free.

lap90 · 01/11/2023 12:09

No i would not and i did not when i was on annual leave and asked to come into the office a few weeks ago.

FloweryName · 01/11/2023 12:14

Why are you so worried about this?

You were asked to attend in a general email that went to everyone, you’ve said no and that’s that.

Unless they come back and complain about your response you don’t have a problem.

I haven't once said I'm worried about it, where have I said that?

I'm interested in other people's opinions on it.

You're preoccupied enough to start a thread about it.

Honestly it's a non issue, you're not expected to attend.

Enjoy your time off.

This is a non event. I don't even know why you responded at all. Your manager knows you're on leave so can't see they would even expect you to go in and there's nothing in that message that indicates that they do?!

WalnutBlue · 01/11/2023 12:26

I would have ignored the message as you are not required to respond to work emails or business when on annual leave.
However you replied, she read it and presumably hasn't responded as no need due to you being off.
Just don't go, relax a little bit, enjoy your leave.
