Do you take your phone everywhere?

I have read people astounded that others do not take their phone everywhere. I don't. If I am going out to a barwith friends I leave it at-home. No point losing it, which i would if i took it. Or if I am popping out to the local shop I leave it, I don't need it.
So do you take your phone everywhere?
YABU = yes I do
YANBU = I dont

I'm never more than about 6" from my phone!

curve · 31/10/2023 14:27

My has my bus pass on it so I need to get home - and I can use it to pay for things -it does so much more than message and make calls.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 31/10/2023 14:29

It's odd not to take something like a phone or wallet or keys out with you in case you lose it. Just don't lose it!

I always have my phone with me, I am the emergency contact for my school-going DC. I'm also not organised enough to make all necessary arrangements for everything in advance. I reply to texts and emails on public transport; I listen to podcasts in the car; I use it to pay for things. I don't NEED it, but it's handy.

nokidshere · 31/10/2023 14:31

I always have phone, keys, & purse with me. I don't need it, I rarely use it, but I might need to so I take it.

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 31/10/2023 14:32

You can do what you like with your phone (Halloween Smile) but I take mine everywhere. It's my purse, music collection, audiobook player and map as well as my phone - I don't take anything else out with me but the phone often.

Dis626 · 31/10/2023 14:32

I take mine everywhere. It isn't just a phone, it's a bank card, camera, camcorder, notepad, library, sat nav, emergency contact info, medical info etc

54isanopendoor · 31/10/2023 14:35

Yes. I've 2 disabled young people for whom I am a Carer so need contactability.

(also it's in a case with my bank cards etc so I need it at the shops etc)

But if it was neither of those things I wouldn't, no.

tulippa · 31/10/2023 14:37

Yes, always take mine out unless I forget to which is rare. I don't have anyone to pick me up from a night out so need to have a way to get myself home. Also things happen - what if you get ill half way through your night out? What if you witness an accident on the way to the shop? Yes, unlikely, but surely it's easier to have a way of contacting someone just in case?
I don't always keep it with me when at home though and will quite often misplace it random rooms or lose it in the folds of the duvet cover etc.

KissTheRains · 31/10/2023 14:40

It is never far from my hand.
In fact, it's in a folding case with a wrist strap that i carry in my hand pretty much all the time.

I never know when I'll get an email I need to see, a text or a call from DD or just to browse for new stuff to covet.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/10/2023 14:42

YABU
It genuinely is my lifeline
I'm disabled and am at risk of falling over( although I try not to!) and I know I can always call a friend or a taxi
My 3 sons all have me on find my friend too just for safety
I might also get a text in a supermarket reminding me to pick up something for my DS too

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/10/2023 14:44

and yes, I even take in in the shower
In waterproof pouch)

alloalloallo · 31/10/2023 14:44

Mine comes out with me everywhere too.

I use it for Apple Pay, the local bus company app, parking apps, diary, sat nav, the camera, music/audio books, Uber

My favourite bar has QR code ordering - so easy - no queuing and can pay by Apple Pay.

My DD has a disability and sometimes needs to get hold of me urgently.

It feels weird on the odd occasion I’ve forgotten it and is invariably a ball ache as I will need it for something and have to go home and get it.

Vettrianofan · 31/10/2023 14:45

Was on a day trip out of my usual region today and without taking my phone I wouldn't have found out that the pub we wanted to visit isn't open until 4pm on Tuesdays so I could quickly change plans and go somewhere else to eat lunch when limited on time.

It saves a lot of time having access to a mobile phone while out and about.

BitofaStramash · 31/10/2023 14:46

Yes most places.

Vettrianofan · 31/10/2023 14:46

If on my own I also take it with me for safety reasons. Have been followed in the past and wouldn't want to be in that predicament again.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 31/10/2023 14:47

Yes. I use it to pay for things and for transport - if I was out at a bar I'd book an uber home, for example.

It doesn't mean I actively use it, as I don't tend to.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 31/10/2023 14:49

I answered this on the other thread but no, I don't. I take it much more than I need to purely because I go for walks and track my steps and route. I could use my running watch but prefer to use the app on my phone for walks.

But if I didn't, I would often leave it behind (not always as it's good to have the map app if I am slightly off the beaten track). And since that lady got her phone stolen from a gym locker and bank accounts emptied a couple of years ago I don't take it with me when I go swimming.

If I go shopping I tend to leave it behind too.

As for there being no point to it unless you take it with you, I don't have people calling me all the time, and if they did, they'd just call back or send a text. I don't have to be contactable every second of the day.

Estermay · 31/10/2023 15:24

If I am out my DP can deal with any emergencies with the kids. If there was a real emergency of serious injury, my dp would just ring the bar. But its never happened.
And my friends don't all just bugger off home early. But if they did I would just get a taxi.
I take a card out or cash. Not a phone.
Similarly if I go to my parents grave I don't take my phone. I know the way. I am not taking any photos in the cemetery.
And I want to enjoy life offline.

And there are places I go where I don't want to answer calls or texts. I hate the idea of being 100% available

Oakbeam · 31/10/2023 15:40

I usually take it with me when I go out, although it depends where I am and what I am doing. There isn’t much point where I am now because there is no phone signal.

You don't have to answer calls or texts even if you have your phone with you.

Phone on silent in your bag. If you want to be offline you can forget it's there.

This is a bit like people not buying house insurance: never needed it, don't know why I should.

That's the whole point. You don't need it until you do.

Taking your phone with you doesn't mean you have to be active on the internet and/or contactable. It just means that if you need it, it's there.

But whatever. Do what you want to do. Does it really matter what other people do?

Gnomegnomegnome · 31/10/2023 15:47

I’m always being told off by family for not having my phone stuck to me at all times and because it’s always on silent.

Torganer · 31/10/2023 15:52

Just because you take your phone out, doesn’t mean you are going to be on it all night?!

I don’t have nights out like you, my husband doesn’t pick me up as we have a toddler at home, but even if we didn’t I wouldn’t expect him to wait up for me. When I meet friends we like to be more spontaneous, so will meet at a bar, then find a restaurant, then probably another bar or two. I also use my phone to pay for food and drinks, the tube/bus on the way there and to order a cab home. I’m certainly not on my phone reading all night.

WeighDownOnMe · 31/10/2023 15:54

Absolutely everywhere.

I pay for everything with it, I track my kids on it, keep in touch with my daughter all the time (autistic and needs a lot of contact), WhatsApp my family and friends every day, listen to Spotify on it at least 8-10 hours every day, do my banking on it, need it for my job (social media).

Never ever without it.
