Who actually benefits from changing the clocks?

shockwaze · 31/10/2023 06:13

Kids up at 5:30. Pretty sure that the same thing has happened in many, many houses this morning.

It's just an hour, but so disruptive to children.

Who benefits? Winds me up every year.

Can't farmers jujst get up when they like? Surely they don't get up an hour earlier or later just because the clocks have changed? I would have thought they would know when it gets light and get up accordingly if they have things to do?

I have got to confess, before reading this thread, I thought the change had more to do with kids going to school in the dark/paperboys and girls doing their rounds in the dark. So, I looked up the original reason for the change and it actually has nothing to do with farmers. It's actually the opposite.

I haven't rtft so maybe someone has said this but wasn't daylight saving time actually invented to maximise the amount of leisure time people could have after work without spending money on fuel/ lighting? Then it was adopted more widely as a result of wars again to save money and fuel and increase productivity.
I value the mornings being light earlier ( although that's 9.30 here) because when it's frosty or snowy no amount of gritting works as well as sun or warmer air on the road. And then when driving in the evening at least roads have had a chance to warm up.

Thanks @Utterbunkum !

Utterbunkum · 31/10/2023 10:45

I've put this in a reply to someone else, but thought I would post it generally. I found this interesting because I thought the change was to do with kids going to school in the dark, not farmers, so I have just looked up the reason. It's not about farmers at all, in fact it was the opposite. This article actually states why it doesn't make much odds to farmers.

Why the fuck can’t farmers just get up an hour earlier than everyone else? Mind boggling that the whole country has to adjust.

God the selfishness in that post is just unreal, like farmers don't have to get up early enough and work long days as it is

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 31/10/2023 08:17

Could you explain that please?

Berwick upon tweed is further north than Gretna green and Dumfries.

mimiku · 31/10/2023 10:53

I hate it. On Sunday my middle son was up full of beans at 4.30, followed by my youngest shortly after 5. Yesterday was mildly better at 5.30 for both and both slept in til gone 7 today which they rarely ever do so I think they were completely exhausted. Every single clock change this happens, does my head in personally.

Skye99 · 31/10/2023 10:57

That is interesting, thank you.

About the Scottish question- when the House of Commons decided to revert to the current BST/GMT after four years of BST year round, there were Tory and Labour MPs in Scotland (think only about 4 or 5 SNP and maybe 2 Liberals). So it was in their interests to act considering Scotland as to all intents and purposes, without Scottish MP votes, there went the government majority.

notimagain · 31/10/2023 11:01

@WestwardHo1

Have a look at the difference between Lowestoft and St Just (for example)

Exactly...there's an east/west element element to this as well as a north/south and that variation, plus the fact that even Sun doesn't run to GMT/UTC (it's usually running fast or slow, depending on the time of year) takes us back to why Standard Time all started....

Wexone · 31/10/2023 11:03

This is the time we should be, i live in south Ireland and even on Saturday morning wasnt getting bright till around 8am. Imagine then what it be like come December, far easier to get up in morning and get on with your day when its dark. Plus aswell with the freezing temperatures coming now at night, you need to sun early in the morning to heat up thing, melt freezing roads etc. This is what causes accidents in morning. You actually only have winter time for 5 months - Oct to March is 5 months - you have summer time for 7 months of the year. i hate the clocks going forward throws me off kilter completely. Most of the countries in the world change their clocks around this time aswell, so its not just us, will have calls with parts for the US at different times as think theirs not till next week. It works for a reason, if you wanted rid it needs to stay on this time

You are welcome. It seems most of us, including me until I looked it up, don't actually know the origin of the clocks changing. It's one of those bits of understanding that has been lost with time.
What it also goes to show is that one person gives a reason and everyone else just falls in with it without actually checking if it's accurate.

It's very strange but I'm the complete opposite!
I feel utterly dreadful if I change to GMT, it may be what it should be but I feel like death warmed up.
If I go to bed at 10pm(11pm BST) GMT I still wake up at the same time .
So essentially rather than getting a lie in ,I'm losing an hours sleep.
I've just decided to stick with BST.
My body clock seems adjusted to it and tbh unless you were alive prior to 1916 it what I've have always experienced.
When the clocks go forward I'm like a mad March hare !

I am delighted. Means I can wake up naturally with the sunlight and get to work feeling awake. Kids wake up bang on 7am. Love it.

But it won't be for long and then it will be dark in the mornings until gone 8 so what is the point?

Because if we didn't set rhe clock back to GMT it would be dark until gone 9am. That's the point.

I’m up & out early so like the lighter mornings, soz!

Yes this ! OP why are you getting so shirty with everyone ? Yes kids will be awake early but then it's not actually any earlier is it just that the time is different . Few days and they will adjust.

GunboatDiplomacy · 31/10/2023 12:11

JaninaDuszejko · 31/10/2023 06:34

In the 60s they kept it permanently on BST which qas obviously wrong. That wouldn't happen with GMT all year round.

GMT all year round would mean it getting light at 3:30 am in the summer, which would be no use to man nor beast, and presumably a nightmare for farmers.

They’d be getting up at the same time genius, you do know it’s only the clocks that change not actual time?

I would rather it dark until 9am than dark at 3.30pm. Yesterday it was dark at 2.30 and I had to put the light on
