AIBU to be furious about fireworks?

I’m not opposed to them on bonfire night, or even the weekends around bonfire night, but WHY do people feel the need to set them off in the days (weeks!) running up to bonfire night?

DD is 5 months and an amazing sleeper, but has been woken up four nights running by fireworks!

Luckily, our dog isn’t scared of fireworks so it’s not a problem for her, but I know a lot of pets are terrified.

AIBU for being annoyed that people are setting them off outside of the approved (by me!) times and days?

We got invited to go to a bonfire this weekend for bonfire night where there will be fireworks. I’ve said no on two grounds:

  1. dd1 doesn’t like fireworks or the noise and will be constantly upset the whole time. Dd2 is a baby and will most likely cry.

  2. new cat this year and I do not want to leave her alone during fireworks night as she’ll be more likely to go outside if I’m away. I want her to stay in away from idiots who harm animals with fireworks.

Edit to add 3rd:
fireworks are shite and a total waste of money. Paying hundreds to hear a tiny bang and see it fizzle out into nothing when I could be home being warm.

Why the detailed protesting exolanation? Who was forcing you to go?

@tpxqi No one is forcing but this is a forum to discuss things hence my opinion and discussion.

So basically everyone needs to live in 1957 so you and your dog are happy.

Yes it’s just one dog. No other dogs/animals bothered at all. So you can watch pretty things exploding in the sky.

If there must be fireworks - fair enough - but my dog who is driven to a panic with loud bangs - would not be worried by some pretty sparkling lights in the sky

In fact it would be great if silent fireworks were the ONLY ones you could buy. Save the loud ones for the big events that people are aware of and can plan for. It would probably stop a lot of the yobs throwing them as well - I can't see them necessarily being excited by throwing a silent little stream of pretty stars with no bang. My dog has started reacting this year to the odd bang he's heard. I don't know why, as he was fine when he was a puppy, and last year as an adult. But now he barks whenever he hears any sort of bang now (even heavy footed teenagers upstairs!). Hope your dog is OK next week.

Another tip - which I’ve just done - is to put classical music on really loud for dogs. Mine was a bit barky and now snoozing to some classical tunes!

Well when the really loud bomb sounding ones are going it is not possible to have music or tv loud enough to drown the racket out. Believe me I have tried. Also doubt neighbours would be very happy.

A friend has a greyhound who is absolutely petrified of fireworks. She just shakes non stop and cries. My friend is always scared the dog will have a heart attack. On 5th November and the 2 nights before and after she gives her tranquillisers which help a lot but where she lives the fireworks go on for 3 or more weeks. She can't knock her out every evening for that amount of time. Also they are not just for a couple of hours but often 6 or more hours.

She has tried music, tv, thunder shirt, just about everything and nothing works. It is heartbreaking to see her

Yabu

Why do people assume its 'just a dog' that fireworks upset.

They also terrify:

Children
PTSD sufferers - I have a friend, my age so in his early 40s, served in Afghanistan. He finds the random and unpredictable nature of fireworks indescribably distressing and again its not for one day, it is for weeks. He will be far from the only one.
People with a wide variety of disabilities and medical conditions
Pets of many kinds
Wildlife

It's very easy to dismiss those who are anti 'fireworks for public to buy and use whenever they like' as just being concerned about 'one dog'...

Be honest, if you think this, then you also think 'fuck you' to all on the above list too, don't you. Your fun trumps the misery of others.

Of course. I’m sure it doesn’t work for all dogs. It was just a little helpful for mine. It’s is heartbreaking for all those poor dogs that are suffering and nothing works.
