AIBU to be furious about fireworks?

I’m not opposed to them on bonfire night, or even the weekends around bonfire night, but WHY do people feel the need to set them off in the days (weeks!) running up to bonfire night?

DD is 5 months and an amazing sleeper, but has been woken up four nights running by fireworks!

Luckily, our dog isn’t scared of fireworks so it’s not a problem for her, but I know a lot of pets are terrified.

AIBU for being annoyed that people are setting them off outside of the approved (by me!) times and days?

I love in an enormously diverse midlands city and the Diwali celebrations opened today with a big ceremony (and firework display), and will run for two weeks ending with anothef big ceremony (and fireworks display!) on the 12th. So complaining is a bit like moaning when the shops start relentlessly playing "oh I wish it could be Christmas every day from about the 15th of November. It's a very big deal to Hindus!

Fair enough.

I didn't realise that and I apologise.

Oh bore off. Fireworks posts have been banned on our local FB page. Thank the lord. Fingers crossed they'll ban cycling posts too. 🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱

It's the same every year. Why anyone is surprised I don't know.

Oh I wish they would be banned on ours!
Bonfire night has been celebrated for a few hundred years now, surely people could have anticipated this before buying pets.
There's also a campaign to ban Halloween cobwebs on ours too. Naming & shaming anyone who dares put them up so I imagine that will be a yearly borefest now too.

Our next door neighbours have 2 dogs that bark all the time all year round , frequently get through the fence and shit in our garden and we have to keep repairing the fence. They leave the dogs for hours each day so they go mad , nothing we can say makes them stop but every year for the past 3 years they’ve written us a letter instructing us NOT to have fireworks as the dogs get so distressed they have accidents and shake and they will have to be sedated by the vet etc etc etc - our ds is autistic and his birthday is early nov and he loves fireworks but hates crowds so we do a small box in the garden - this year apparently they will call 999 if we go ahead !!

Unbelievable cheek. Let them and they'll be accused of wasting police time. Your son trumps their noisy dogs and obnoxious attitude.

Mamaof1DD · 29/10/2023 22:59

@duchiebun DD is an amazing sleeper usually, including sleeping through our kitchen extension, but at night there’s not often a lot of noise so I think that’s confusing her and waking her up.

Going to try PP’s suggestion of white noise tomorrow!

They should be banned! Absolutely no good reason why the public should have access to explosives.
I've just spent the evening with an elderly gentleman with dementia and PTSD.
PTSD from being involved in D-Day. He was absolutely distraught tonight. How we get him through the next few weeks I don't know.

It was heartbreaking to watch my Chihuahua running around the house tonight trying to escape from the bangs and frightened to death. It's time it was stopped. Damn it is not even November - not yet.

And the world should revolve around your chihuahua’s precious feelings? 🙄

Asiatoyork · 29/10/2023 23:54

@Mamaof1DD A bit off topic, but if you have an amazing sleeper at 5 months I would take that blessing and suck up a few wake ups due to fireworks!

Stupid comment. Dogs have died from the fear of some of these massive explosive fireworks. No -one is saying they object to them a few nights a year but when they go on for weeks at a time it is unacceptable. Dogs don't understand, they just know they are terrified. Is that so difficult to understand? And as others have said it's not just dogs, but veterans, horses, wildlife. Show a bit of compassion.

OswaldSpengler14 · 30/10/2023 00:19

YABU. And a buzz kill.

bellac11 · 30/10/2023 07:10

I love fireworks and dont really have a problem with them any time of year as a celebratory device

People talking about criminals attacking people with them or committing crime with them are conflating different issues. We dont ban cars or knives because some people cant act appropriately with them

But I always notice, every year, that the tone of these discussions go that bonfire traditions can be slagged off with impunity but the minute different cultural/religious ceremonies are mentioned which use fireworks theres a shut down and no one questions or is annoyed at that.

Cluelessasacucumber · 30/10/2023 07:37

YANBU, fireworks are louder, cheaper, more readily available and more regularly used than they ever have been.

They kill a lot of wild birds and cause a lot of litter as well as the stress to people and pets.

I actually love watching fireworks, but I support the RSPCAs very reasonable calls for regulation https://www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/fireworks

Change Firework Laws For Animals | RSPCA

Join our campaign to change firework regulations. We receive hundreds of calls about fireworks and animals every year.

Tell em the next time the mutts go to the vets to be sedated to make it permanent .

I'd have been onto everyone I could about them barking all the time anyway so might just let random fireworks off to piss them off

in some places they are used to let the local drug users know the dealers have got new supplies in so not all of them are normal use of fireworks

Wow, you really do learn something new every day!

GunboatDiplomacy · 30/10/2023 07:45

Reducing the permitted decibel level and increasing the age to buy them to 21 seems like a proportionate approach.

Maxus · 30/10/2023 07:54

fluffypotatoes · 29/10/2023 22:23

But it will be scared on the 5th too? What were you planning to do then?

The last time I had a dog was in the 80s. In our area people used to stick to only ,5,th Nov. We used to give our dog medicine to calm him down prescribed by a vet. You carnt do this for weeks on end.

Wow, you really do learn something new every day!

More like you really do hear some ridiculous made up nonsense every day. Why would drug dealers communicate by whatever other means they use (SMS, WhatsApp, word of mouth or whatever) the other 50-odd weeks of the year but switch to fireworks for a couple of weeks in November? If a drug user sees fireworks going off, how do they know they are a dealer signal and not just somebody letting off fireworks? How do they know which dealer? Why would a dealer spend £40 on a box of fireworks when they can send texts for free?

In other news, paedophiles are not using fireworks to communicate either, nor are terrorists, people traffickers or Young Conservatives.

ohdamnitjanet · 30/10/2023 07:58

@WalkingThroughTreacle yes ok, I jumped to quickly, you can calm down now.

My dad has dementia and gets very upset and bothered by the noise of fireworks.

Sorry he didn't stop to consider the fact that fireworks have always gone off before his brain betrayed him.

They should be banned from sale and restricted to organised, licensed displays only. It's absolutely ludicrous that we sell coloured explosives for people to launch into the sky (or throw at people, as has been happening where I live).

I agree, it’s bizarre that anyone can buy these, they are very dangerous in stupid people’s hands. And actually even the most sensible adult can have an accident with a firework.
Time to restrict them to an organised display, no Government in the UK would ever have the balls to do that though.

It must be so scary for your dad 🙁

Well that just shows how little you know.

Im running late for work this morning and to let my colleagues know, Ive just set off a roman candle in the back garden.

ohtowinthelottery · 30/10/2023 08:05

Be grateful you don't live near a posh wedding venue. They go off throughout the year here!

Whatthefnow · 30/10/2023 08:08

MrsClatterbuck · 30/10/2023 08:08

Here in NI fireworks are traditional at Halloween but due to the troubles they were banned and you have to apply for a licence to use them. It used to cost £30 but probably has increased. It definitely has cut down on the indiscriminate use of fireworks. Though anyone living near the border can maybe purchase them across the border though that may have been clamped down on. There are still organised displays. Last display I saw was at a wedding.

I think most of MN will say YABU, however the reality is that YANBU, far from it!

pumpkinpie25 · 30/10/2023 08:09

People are selfish twats op. They will continue to do it when they want because they don't care about anyone else's children, pets, feelings, inconvenience...just as long as they can have their fun.

There are the same arguments every year on our community FB page and there always one person who was fiercely for fireworks, calling those who complained 'snowflakes' etc. Well last year one of her family dogs ran away due to the fireworks and was lost for several days. Cue several 'help find our dog' posts and asking for everyone to rally round and find it. Thankfully the dog did turn up but she's been weirdly quiet about fireworks ever since.

People only care about their own satisfaction. It's a sad world. I think fireworks should be for pre planned displays only. Not sold to all and sundry. Silent fireworks should also be compulsory.
