AIBU to be furious about fireworks?

I’m not opposed to them on bonfire night, or even the weekends around bonfire night, but WHY do people feel the need to set them off in the days (weeks!) running up to bonfire night?

DD is 5 months and an amazing sleeper, but has been woken up four nights running by fireworks!

Luckily, our dog isn’t scared of fireworks so it’s not a problem for her, but I know a lot of pets are terrified.

AIBU for being annoyed that people are setting them off outside of the approved (by me!) times and days?

@herewegoroundthebastardbush ah I didn’t know that, thank you!

I'd write a letter saying at 7:00 on x day we will be lighting a box of fireworks. And take a photo. And then just get on with it.

We always do it on the 5th anyway but they are absolutely raging about it. They act like they care about their dogs one day each year !

EvilElsa · 29/10/2023 22:04

My dog is absolutely terrified of them so obviously it's not a great time of the year for us. However, the world does not revolve around me so it's just something I have to suck up and deal with. It is frustrating when they start mid October and go on for weeks and weeks but what can you do.

Mamaof1DD · 29/10/2023 22:05

@Beezknees I don’t spend every year annoyed by it, this year is the first year I’ve had a baby who I need to consider! Like I say, my dog isn’t bothered so it’s never impacted us before (we still never set them off though, especially as we live in a coastal town who have a lovely display!)

Yeah agree - think they’re a horrible waste of money & bad taste right now

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 29/10/2023 22:07

My dad has dementia and gets very upset and bothered by the noise of fireworks.

Sorry he didn't stop to consider the fact that fireworks have always gone off before his brain betrayed him.

They should be banned from sale and restricted to organised, licensed displays only. It's absolutely ludicrous that we sell coloured explosives for people to launch into the sky (or throw at people, as has been happening where I live).

Tell me you're white British with no interest in other cultures without telling me...

I'll bite. I believe Diwali is November 12th this year. Please let me know what other cultures there are that will be celebrating with fireworks around the 29th October.

Dunnoburt · 29/10/2023 22:11

Yup..sorry OP.... love a good firework. Yabu

TBH I'm not to sure the police will do much, a few fireworks in a back garden is hardly a crime.

Having said that when I was younger the fireworks that I remember were the type that went pop/fizz, if they lit at all and that was it.
We went to a friend's bonfire night get together a few years ago and stopped off on route to buy some fireworks from a garden centre, different ball game these were, when they went off they nearly took the neighbours windows out.

PawsisShady · 29/10/2023 22:03

Depends where you live doesn't it?
Fun wasn't having one put through an open window into my home and having to find the money to pay for the damage. I now don't open my windows any time around bonfire night

Or the woman that had one thrown in her car with her baby, or the police that get attacked by having them thrown at them every year
Or that people injure animals with them every year whether it's hedgehogs or tying fireworks to cats

Quite clearly this is all awful, and not what fireworks are intended for. Even on November 5th!

OP have you considered some kind of white noise or gentle music in your daughter’s room? It blocks out outside noise. I found my daughter slept better with it on, as it blocked any noise we made in the evening. now she is older she listens to gentle music (the Yoto app has a sleep radio station which plays gentle music all night, no ads or anything). Won’t solve anyone’s dog problem but might help your baby sleep problem?

It happens every year so YABU to spend every year annoyed by it.

Annoyed by the suffering of animals and … well humans I guess (even though we cause the issue). 🙄🫠
It’s not the “same as it’s always been” is it? Fireworks are more powerful, it’s not just one night.
It’s messy, global warming seems to go out the window (wonders why then realised ££££) what an utter waste of money.
Luckily DDog doesn’t give a shit. I do have the ability to sympathise for animals and humans that suffer.

Rosiem2808 · 29/10/2023 22:15

It was heartbreaking to watch my Chihuahua running around the house tonight trying to escape from the bangs and frightened to death. It's time it was stopped. Damn it is not even November - not yet.

daffodilandtulip · 29/10/2023 22:18

You can prepare for bonfire night, and a few days around it because the days doesn't always work. But I shouldn't be having to soothe my pets for three months of every year - plus they go off so late, they often wake me, never mind babies!

I just don't see how something so dangerous is on public sale when there are so many idiots in the public.

LadyWiddiothethird · 29/10/2023 22:18

I cannot stand the bloody things!!!

DixonD · 29/10/2023 22:23

MasterBeth · 29/10/2023 21:54

You are being unreasonable. Fireworks are fun.

Not for everyone.

My friend’s horse jumped out of its field last year when spooked by a firework and was hit (killed) by a car.

But it will be scared on the 5th too? What were you planning to do then?

CyberCritical · 29/10/2023 22:24

Started going off at 4pm here today which seemed a big ridiculous as it was still too light to see the damn things, Diwali light switch on is a big thing here.

We'll have them all week now, and next weekend will be all the Bonfire night shows, then the people using up the excess, then the run up to Diwali, then Diwali, then Xmas light switch on......... we're basically going to have several nights of fireworks every week for the next 2 months, it's the same every year. It gets annoying very quickly.

MzHz · 29/10/2023 22:27

fluffypotatoes · 29/10/2023 21:37

It's the same thing every year though. The weekend before and after the 5th. Nothings changed.

Well that’s wrong.

there was a display in the village here last night

absolutely needs to be controlled, licensed and only on certain dates in the year.

theres a hotel here and almost every fucking weekend they let them off. We’re in the countryside, we can’t have this noise and upset to livestock without some control

gotomomo · 29/10/2023 22:28

We went to Diwali fireworks earlier as it marks the beginning of the festival

gotomomo · 29/10/2023 22:31

@VeniVidiWeeWee

They turn the lights on 2 weeks beforehand and celebrate with fireworks!

CherryMyBrandy · 29/10/2023 22:33

Oh bore off. Fireworks posts have been banned on our local FB page. Thank the lord. Fingers crossed they'll ban cycling posts too. 🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱

It's the same every year. Why anyone is surprised I don't know.

I love in an enormously diverse midlands city and the Diwali celebrations opened today with a big ceremony (and firework display), and will run for two weeks ending with anothef big ceremony (and fireworks display!) on the 12th. So complaining is a bit like moaning when the shops start relentlessly playing "oh I wish it could be Christmas every day from about the 15th of November. It's a very big deal to Hindus!

Babyroobs · 29/10/2023 22:35

It's infuriating. We have double here as lots of people celebrating Diwali also, so they have started tonight and will be ongoing for weeks. Our poor dog spends weeks each year being terrified or sedated.

duchiebun · 29/10/2023 22:39

I heard a faint few tonight & assumed it was the start of Diwali. I never find them particularly noticeable noise wise though.

Stupidnighty · 29/10/2023 22:40

fluffypotatoes · 29/10/2023 21:41

Weren't the fireworks there every year before people got their dogs though. So they knew they'd happen.

This is what I wonder (although I’ve always had cats and dogs and not one has bothered about fireworks)- I know some pets are scared, but fireworks are a fact of life- surely pet owners knew that this might occur when they bought the pet?

They may get banned one day, who knows, but it won’t be because Mrs. Jones of Harehill street (who has always been to fireworks displays before) has got a dog this year and it’s frightened.
