Does anyone feel a bit low and crap at the end of their period? Why are some women so affected by their hormones?

I feel crap today. Low patience and feeling like I could burst into annoyed tears at small stupid stuff, which I normally think of as being PMT. Feeling overwhelmed and annoyed at loads of things, everything is a massive draining effort.

Anyway, I'm curious if others get like this sometimes at the end and not just premenstrually? What hormone dips a lot at the end of a period?

Also, I wondered why some of us feel worse emotionally from hormones changing than others - is it because people vary in how sharply the hormones rise and fall?

Yes I am exactly the same. Infact I feel lower the week after my period than before. I’ve tried researching it, there are others that have the same but can’t see exactly why this is.

Ahnhhhhbb me too!!!!!!!

This has been me for so long. I have googled the hell out of it, nothing very satisfactory. I think tho when period starts all hormones are at their lowest and takes a while for the estrogen to build up. So seems likely that that might affect mood etc.

I'm on day 2 so about to have a shit week basically.

Yep me too. I normally do. Pregnant atm so not an issue but I've been like that for some time. Am in my 30s and didn't notice as much when I was younger, I wonder if it's hormonal changes?

I struggle so much with hormones. I've tried so many different pills and had the coil/ ring before. My natural hormones probably make me the least emotional but then I have a week of feeling hungry, tired and sad, a heavy period where I feel sick and crampy, a week of low energy and a week of feeling good before it goes downhill again. I'd definitely prefer for it to be more evenly balanced through the month as my cycle doesn't really work well for work/ relationships/ hobbies/ family life.

Gosh @AlmondButterToast that sounds so like me. I'd love to just be more 'normal' and have general consistency in how I feel. Always up and down - although always matched to my cycle.

At the moment, I'm trying to get my head around not having any more children and having a hysterectomy (I have bad endo - which doesn't help - but my moods are just wild since I had my child 2 years ago). It just doesnt feel I can live with it as it is. anyway, sorry, don't want to hijack the thread but it is nice to talk to other women who have similar.

Have you found anything that has helped?

Thankfully menopausal now so periods are a thing of the past, but I was the same - always felt ok before my period, but crappy afterwards.

My periods were really heavy so I put it down to lack of energy because of that, but I suspect there was also something hormonal happening, too. You are right, everything seems to be about pre-menstrual tension, but like you mine was definitely post-menstrual.

Yes, definitely notice this feeling low at that stage of the cycle, have done for years

Lucylu1984 · 24/02/2025 12:20

Yes! The build up to my period I actually feel ok, quite energetic etc. Afterwards I'm snappy, tearful and achey 🤷‍♀️
