We shouldn’t be letting off fireworks while innocent families and their homes are being blown up

“When the F-16s come, it is really scary and traumatic. You hear them and then the hiss of the missile and then the big blast, and then you can smell the gunpowder.
“The children are there, terrified, saying exactly this: ‘Let them just kill us for this to end.’

The quote above is an excerpt from an article in the Guardian this morning.

Is it just me or does it seem insensitive that on the 5th November, and for many days either side, we will be lighting up our sky for fun while innocent people, a large proportion of whom are children, are being blown up as if their lives meant nothing.

There are also people in this country who may find the sound and noise of fireworks traumatic. They may have been victims of war, have lost loved ones in this way or are currently fearing for the lives of their families and friends.

Fireworks aren’t fun for everyone.

If you do chose to let off fireworks for entertainment then when you watch them I hope you remember how privileged you are and the impact this might have on the people around you.

OP, you're being ridiculous...

JudgeJ · 29/10/2023 12:53

Well it is only in the UK on or around 5th November that this would happen, so not sure why you are posting. I only know that fireworks in Germany and Austria happen on New Year's Eve/Midnight.

Our German friends loved coming to the big fireworks display at the Barracks, they love fireworks!

Rincol · 29/10/2023 12:56

Fuck me, is there any group that the anti-fireworks crew won't co opt as part of their argument? Speaking as someone who actually has PTSD, I'm personally fucked off at being dragged into the whole thing by morons who want to perpetuate the stereotype of PTSD survivors hiding behind sofas when they hear a bang. It's reductive, inaccurate, insulting and self serving. But, I suppose at least I actually live in the UK. What the fuck difference does it make to anyone in any war zone anywhere whether or not people over here set off fireworks?

grayhairdontcare · 29/10/2023 10:16

@feralunderclass you nearly threw up over fancy dress?
Are you always unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality??
Ffs!

I know! I read that too and thought - nearly vomited? A tad dramatic...

Switcher · 29/10/2023 13:05

Not sure if you noticed Yemen, Sudan, Eritrea, Myanmar, Iraq or any of the other dozens of wars that are pretty much constantly on.

TarnishedRep · 29/10/2023 13:07

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a bonfire night where I’ve stood there and thought, Jesus, that reminds me of cruise missiles or automatic gunfire.

It’s a colourful display of light, albeit a bit noisy, and sensitive to some animals and people.

They use them all over the world, and usually in a much larger spectacle than we do.

I’m off to have some lunch now. Is that alright, or should I nibble on some wet cardboard to make myself feel less guilty about others not having access to an Aldi microwave shepherds pie?

No, you can eat your shepherd's pie but don't you dare enjoy it. With every mouthful you must remind yourself how lucky and privileged you are to be eating it.

BashfulClam · 29/10/2023 13:11

The town near is had a Palestinian rally yesterday, they were chucking flares about so I think fireworks aren’t really an isuue.

Your argument is stupid it’s like saying I shouldn’t wear my glasses/lenses as there are people in the world who are blind.

Rincol · 29/10/2023 13:11

Shepherd's pie is v triggering to sheep for whom the casserole season is a difficult time of year.

Whattodowithit88 · 29/10/2023 13:12

Also drums should be banned. I don’t like the noise, it brings back horrible memories and is very traumatic for me to hear them. They scare and offend me, ban them!

Or maybe I should be reasonable and realise that not everything evolves around me and my experiences, and realise other people may enjoy drums?? Hmmmm Maybe we should ban rationality and reason too??

LivingMyBestAnxietyLife · 29/10/2023 13:13

My daughter has autism. She is non verbal. The one day of the year she is enjoys is firework night. She isn't fond of Christmas, birthdays or Halloween and we do fireworks for her. I tell my neighbours noone drinks or acts silly we do them at 7pm they are finished by 8pm then the kids go to bed. She has to deal with every other holiday because that's life and its the real world. Its just one night

enchantedsquirrelwood · 29/10/2023 13:14

Not read the full thread but in my view fireworks should not be sold for personal use, full stop.

And the ones sold for organised displays should be silent ones.

BethDuttonsTwin · 29/10/2023 13:15

I sometimes think there's a growing swathe of people in the UK who won't be happy until we are all cooped up in our homes - as long as they're not under occupied - consuming only specific sanctioned media, never going on holiday or travelling too far and only being encouraged out so we can attend approved political marches a couple of times a year.

CherryCokeFanatic · 29/10/2023 13:16

Agreed. We shouldn’t drink or eat either as Israel has cut off supplies.

LivingMyBestAnxietyLife · 29/10/2023 13:17

What about children like mine. My child wouldn't be able to go to fireworks display its far to busy for her and her autism. I supposed she will just have to miss out because of a few grumpy people who want them banned

Daisyislazy · 29/10/2023 13:18

feralunderclass · 29/10/2023 10:14

I saw a group of young children walking to school the other morning in fancy dress. One of them was covered in 'blood', smeared over white socks, t-shirt and their face. As precious as it sounds I nearly vomited thinking about things we've seen on the news. I felt it was very insensitive of the parent who felt this was a good idea. Then I remembered that life for people goes on, especially when you are not affected by it. So whilst I certainly don't want to hear any fireworks, I don't think it's a good idea to ban it for dc who probably aren't even aware of what's going on.

Oh ffs

Guesswho88 · 29/10/2023 13:19

In a sense you are right. You sound like a thoughtful and compassionate person. Of course when met with the slightest threat to people's way of enjoying a weekend you will be met with selfish outcries. Never mind the fact that people are dying as we effing speak.

And what impact would people in the uk avoiding fireworks have on those people?

Itsbritneybitch22 · 29/10/2023 13:22

If you have a dog that you can’t train and make them used to fireworks that’s on you let’s not make up stupid shit to try and stop people using fireworks.

Rincol · 29/10/2023 13:22

I hear there's no internet in large parts of Gaza.

Therefore I am shocked, shocked and appalled I tell you, to realise that the OP has used the internet to create this thread. Doesn't she care??!

lwishyouwould · 29/10/2023 13:22

We shouldn't sell fireworks privately at all.
Children
Animals
Anyone else who might me frightened or upset like people with PTSD.

One local display at a set time is manageable for most. Random fucking fireworks going off every night for weeks isn't.

My dog is completely traumatised despite lots of training, special blankets etc
It drives me absolutely mental and is so stressful.
Fucking ban them.

Rincol · 29/10/2023 13:25

I wish the dogs round here were put off track by loud noises. It might mean they'd give over barking once in a while.
