We shouldn’t be letting off fireworks while innocent families and their homes are being blown up

“When the F-16s come, it is really scary and traumatic. You hear them and then the hiss of the missile and then the big blast, and then you can smell the gunpowder.
“The children are there, terrified, saying exactly this: ‘Let them just kill us for this to end.’

The quote above is an excerpt from an article in the Guardian this morning.

Is it just me or does it seem insensitive that on the 5th November, and for many days either side, we will be lighting up our sky for fun while innocent people, a large proportion of whom are children, are being blown up as if their lives meant nothing.

There are also people in this country who may find the sound and noise of fireworks traumatic. They may have been victims of war, have lost loved ones in this way or are currently fearing for the lives of their families and friends.

Fireworks aren’t fun for everyone.

If you do chose to let off fireworks for entertainment then when you watch them I hope you remember how privileged you are and the impact this might have on the people around you.

Do you know what November 5th is about ?

Or are you just reacting with minimal knowledge like every Tom dick and Harry on SM right now?

Doteycat · 29/10/2023 10:18

If you are going to Virtue signal, at least pick something decent.

Rediculous.

Nothanksthanksanyway · 29/10/2023 10:18

If people still have literal money to burn, then. Let them. But it should only be one night and only until like 9pm.

they go on for weeks and all hours here and that’s really selfish and shit.

ABCXYZ17 · 29/10/2023 10:19

There is conflict in the world all of the time, how many other conflicts do you care enough about to say that fireworks are insensitive? They are completely different things.

Wibblywobblylikejelly · 29/10/2023 10:20

Every single year for as long as I can remember one country has started bombing another.

This is just the latest. Next year this will be old but they'll probably still be at it and we'll have a new one.

Unless we're the ones doing the bombing or being bombed I'm going to continue with my life and its small moments of happiness.

MinnieL · 29/10/2023 10:21

-_-

LaDerniereVacheFolle · 29/10/2023 10:21

I don't know about anyone else but I live in a big
city and fireworks go off regularly for various religious celebrations.

As an atheist I can tell you I have yet to complain.

.

margotrose · 29/10/2023 10:21

Personally, I wish fireworks were banned from private sale. Public displays only with plenty of warning so people with PTSD or animals can plan accordingly.

Chickpea17 · 29/10/2023 10:24

Get a grip

RubyRubyRubyRubay · 29/10/2023 10:25

There are plenty of reasons we shouldn't have so many fireworks but this isn't one of them.

Perhaps you shouldn't have a festive dinner because of all the people starving in the world. Perhaps we shouldn't celebrate Diwali or bonfire night because of people who have suffered loss in forest fires.

Sorry - no.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 29/10/2023 10:26

Don't be absurd.

I do however think that the general public should not be allowed to buy or let off fireworks. We literally had someone's improperly launched rocket flop over their fence and land at our feet on the pavement and had seconds to shift away from it. If I'd been elderly/disabled/heavily pregnant/in heavy foot traffic then it would've exploded at my feet.

Displays should only take place over bonfire weekend/on Diwali etc. I'm not really sure why there's displays going on this weekend when next Sunday is the 5th.

Rewis · 29/10/2023 10:26

I do think private sales of fireworks should be banned for various reasons. But because innocent kids being bombed elsewhere (like they have been for decades/centuries) is ridiculous way to frame it

Vitriolinsanity · 29/10/2023 10:27

Yes! An organised firework display on the village green is exactly like Gaza.

Ban it!!

GabriellaMontez · 29/10/2023 10:27

Is this some weird AI nonsense?

AcclimDD · 29/10/2023 10:28

Don't be ridiculous OP

AutumnFroglets · 29/10/2023 10:28

I guess we should also ban all personal drones too since they are being used increasingly for war purposes.

Loud (and only loud) fireworks for personal use should be banned anyway but not for your reasoning. The quiet pretties can stay Grin

TLDRfuckers · 29/10/2023 10:28

YABU for reading and quoting that shitty rag the Guardian and whilst I think that fireworks should not be for sale to the idiotic general public, this is a ridiculous way of framing of it.

hattie43 · 29/10/2023 10:34

I don't agree with your sentiment at all . I'm fed up of foreign wars impacting us here . Yes what's happening is awful but although I personally hate fireworks people have a right to use them .

QuestionableMouse · 29/10/2023 10:35

There's a lot more pressing reasons not to have fireworks.

Feellikeafailurenow · 29/10/2023 10:36

YABU and need to get a grip & i say that as someone who hates fireworks and bonfire night!

OneTC · 29/10/2023 10:37

Wow some people hate fireworks enough to shoehorn them into a terrible humanitarian crisis. Seriously have a word with yourself

Sarahconnor1 · 29/10/2023 10:38

There has been conflict and war across the world for as long as I can remember.

Have you opposed bonfire night in previous years, if not this screams of virtue signalling.

personally i would like to see the sale of fireworks limited to organised displays but I have held this position for many many years.

feralunderclass · 29/10/2023 10:38

grayhairdontcare · 29/10/2023 10:16

@feralunderclass you nearly threw up over fancy dress?
Are you always unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality??
Ffs!

Yes I did. Sorry if the genocide of children that is being reported on TV continuously has passed you by. Seeing a child smeared with 'blood' walking along a road was momentarily quite disturbing!

feralunderclass · 29/10/2023 10:40

hattie43 · 29/10/2023 10:34

I don't agree with your sentiment at all . I'm fed up of foreign wars impacting us here . Yes what's happening is awful but although I personally hate fireworks people have a right to use them .

Honestly do you know how heartless this makes you sound? In what way is the current war impacting you?

Malarandras · 29/10/2023 10:44

Excuse me, but Guy Fawkes and chums went to a lot of effort to try to blow up parliament on OUR behalf. Had they succeeded who knows where the country could be now? And all the thanks he got was a rather gruesome execution. The least we can do is set off a few fireworks on his behalf.
