We shouldn’t be letting off fireworks while innocent families and their homes are being blown up

“When the F-16s come, it is really scary and traumatic. You hear them and then the hiss of the missile and then the big blast, and then you can smell the gunpowder.
“The children are there, terrified, saying exactly this: ‘Let them just kill us for this to end.’

The quote above is an excerpt from an article in the Guardian this morning.

Is it just me or does it seem insensitive that on the 5th November, and for many days either side, we will be lighting up our sky for fun while innocent people, a large proportion of whom are children, are being blown up as if their lives meant nothing.

There are also people in this country who may find the sound and noise of fireworks traumatic. They may have been victims of war, have lost loved ones in this way or are currently fearing for the lives of their families and friends.

Fireworks aren’t fun for everyone.

If you do chose to let off fireworks for entertainment then when you watch them I hope you remember how privileged you are and the impact this might have on the people around you.

OMG what nonsense.

grayhairdontcare · 29/10/2023 10:09

You are talking absolute shit!
Have a serious word with yourself

Londiniumrocks · 29/10/2023 10:10

It’s just you. I grew up in a conflict and hate fireworks, explosions and all things military. But I wouldn’t begrudge others fireworks.

WhateverMate · 29/10/2023 10:10

What 'we' shouldn't be doing is using the tragic deaths and trauma suffered by innocent families, to make a point about firework useage.

There are plenty of reasons why they should be outlawed without stooping to this.

Basilton · 29/10/2023 10:10

Two unrelated things.

NewUsernameJT · 29/10/2023 10:11

what the hell, thats like saying we shouldn’t eat chocolate as its a luxury and there are people starving in the world

MajorBarbara · 29/10/2023 10:12

My mother-in-law, brought up Catholic, was slapped by a nun in front of the class when she said that she'd been to a Guy Fawkes firework party. Would have been around 1960.

AdrianaLaCerva · 29/10/2023 10:12

Yeo, it’s just you. What a load of nonsense.

fluffypotatoes · 29/10/2023 10:12

Fireworks are awful anyway. We should stop firing shit into the sky.

BananaHamster · 29/10/2023 10:13

I hate fireworks but I'd never begrudge someone else enjoying them!

Comparing fireworks to war is complete and utter bollocks. When you come to this country you need to accept its countries traditions.

BitofaStramash · 29/10/2023 10:13

That's a new take on the anti fireworks thread.

And we've not even finished with the anti Halloween threads yet. .

PurpleChrayne · 29/10/2023 10:13

Oh hush.

Unless you actually have skin in this game, stop stirring.

Palmasailor · 29/10/2023 10:14

Give it up we’ve murdered millions in Iraq. Bombs dropped from 30,000 feet on everyone but because we did it, it was all ok and a “price worth paying” and the consequences not shown on tv.

And you might have even voted for the government that did it.

Syndulla · 29/10/2023 10:14

Are you a dog owner looking for another reason to ban fireworks by any chance? I've seen a few dog owners do this recently.

I personally think private sales of fireworks should be banned, but organised displays are part of a long tradition and we shouldn't pander to groups demanding their end.

feralunderclass · 29/10/2023 10:14

I saw a group of young children walking to school the other morning in fancy dress. One of them was covered in 'blood', smeared over white socks, t-shirt and their face. As precious as it sounds I nearly vomited thinking about things we've seen on the news. I felt it was very insensitive of the parent who felt this was a good idea. Then I remembered that life for people goes on, especially when you are not affected by it. So whilst I certainly don't want to hear any fireworks, I don't think it's a good idea to ban it for dc who probably aren't even aware of what's going on.

Dweetfidilove · 29/10/2023 10:15

Just stop ✋🏾

What about people who haven't "come to this country"?

Twillow · 29/10/2023 10:15

That is a fucking good point.

Sadly most people have few cogent political sensibilities ( a neighbour yesterday complained that any Palestinian refugees who reached the country would be immediately given a house and benefits - I asked him where he heard this and he said it was on the news. A quick google showed absolutely nothing so obviously GB News or Daily Mail nonsense._)

Also they are big bucks for shops so they wouldn't support this either.

It really is a time for organised displays only though, the bangs that go on at random times for weeks after from individuals/yobs are unnecessary and as you say, frightening for many.

Nellodee · 29/10/2023 10:16

Has there been a bonfire night in living memory where no country has been at war?

user1471447924 · 29/10/2023 10:16

What a wet lettuce.

grayhairdontcare · 29/10/2023 10:16

@feralunderclass you nearly threw up over fancy dress?
Are you always unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality??
Ffs!

joelmillersbackpack · 29/10/2023 10:17

Have a day off.

They may well claim they have but they're still stirring.

FrodoBagginsToeHair · 29/10/2023 10:17

Have fun but flagellate yourself while doing it

LunaMay · 29/10/2023 10:17

Nah. Where was your concern previously? Children have been dying in war for years upon years, did you care then?
