Low lying placenta

Posting here for traffic.

If you had a low lying placenta (last measure was 1cm at 34 weeks getting measured again tomorrow) when did you have your c section? Currently booked for 39 weeks. Read somewhere it should be between 36 and 37 weeks.

39 weeks here. I was originally given a date of 39+4 but I begged my midwife to push for an earlier date and she managed to get me in slightly earlier at 39 weeks.

FourEyesGood · 29/10/2023 08:10

Mine was 39 weeks (13 years ago).

Kangaroobrain · 29/10/2023 08:17

Mine was 38 weeks (25 years ago!)

Thank you!

Just wondering what gestation c-section you ended up having? I still have a low-lying posterior placenta .9 cm from os at 32 weeks. Generally, where I live (Holland) they push for a 38-39 week c-section for this.

I've had one big bleed at 20 weeks and 8-9 episodes of spotting. I'm extremely nervous about needing an emergency c-section. Because if I do anything remotely physical end up spotting, I'd like a 37 week c-section if I still have a low lying placenta by my 35 week scan so I can better prepare mentally.

Just wondering what ended up happening with yours!

I had an emergency C section at 34/35 weeks. Kept bleeding and had a massive bleed one night. Was in hospital from 27 weeks and had the c section half an hour after the big bleed.

I’m due to have my planned c section on Thursday (eeek) at 39 weeks.

I had a bleed just before 35 weeks and was kept in hospital for a week. At that stage they were fully prepared to do an emergency section if the bleeding continued. As it was it stopped and no emergency section.

I had a scan at mid 36 weeks and then they said the placenta had moved up. It was 2cm away from the exit. Technically it would be fine for a natural birth but I have other medical issues and so that’s why I’m continuing with the section.

@TUlip221 i kept having repeated bleeds from 27 weeks and they said they wanted to get me to 36 weeks and then would do a planned c section. As it was I ended up having an emergency one at 32 weeks after a huge bleed.

Mines now classed as complete placenta Previa and have had recurrent APH. I’m booked in for 37wks - few weeks to go!! 😬

TUlip221 · 14/11/2023 14:51

Thanks! Did you have complete placenta previa or low-lying? I'm worried they're going to stick with a 38/39 week c-section because I've had heavy spotting and only one big bleed.

I really want to opt for earlier bc I'm terrified of emergency c-section and more bleeding, and it putting my baby at risk.

WutheringMights · 14/11/2023 14:51

@TUlip221 a posterior placenta is unlikely to move much. The reason for this is because the uterus stretches from the front so only a placenta located towards the front of the uterus will move forward and upwards.

TUlip221 · 14/11/2023 15:04

@WutheringMights thanks! My placenta was positioned 1.6cm away from the os. However, in the recent 32-week scan, it appears to have moved closer, now measuring only 0.9cm from the os.

I'm curious whether the position of the uterus (or maybe the uterus pulling forward) can influence the placental movement, potentially causing it to shift closer to the os?

I don't even know if that's possible but these fluctuating measurements are causing me to question the reliability of the readings and somewhat eroding my confidence in the accuracy of the assessments, and their opinion on c-section gestational date.

WutheringMights · 14/11/2023 15:09

@TUlip221 yes, my measurements were always a bit random but ultimately, they can't risk you having a vaginal birth if you are potentially under 1cm from the cervix.

Even if you had placenta previa, they will still likely book you in for an elective section at around the 39 week mark.

Any sign of bleeding before then must be dealt with urgently incase of cord prolapse. This was my fear on the weeks leading up to the section. I got to 37 weeks and just wanted her out through fear of an emergency section.

TUlip221 · 14/11/2023 15:11

@WutheringMights did they give you the 37 week c- section? I have the EXACT same fear. At this point, I'd rather the baby out safely then risk anything. Especially since I've had such heavy spotting throughout my pregnancy.

TUlip221 · 14/11/2023 15:12

@WutheringMights I live in Holland where their risk threshold seems to be very high. I'm afraid even considering I've had one big bleed, and heavy spotting, they won't allow a c-section before 39 weeks.

WutheringMights · 14/11/2023 16:05

@TUlip221 no, they made me wait until 39 weeks (UK). I was the same as you - I wanted the baby out and just felt she would be safer out than in. I concluded that while the risk of cord prolapse was there, the risk must be deemed low enough for them to not rush me in for an earlier section.
