Reading romance whilst babysitting

GinGinAllTheGin · 28/10/2023 21:30

I’m babysitting for my sister whilst she’s out for dinner. My niece and nephew were in bed and asleep before she left.

I was planning on reading my kindle for the evening… except that my sister has told me that I’m “not allowed to read smutty books in her house while looking after her children”!

I’ve tried explain that it’s a romance novel with some spicy scenes but she’s not having any of it. I get the impression this is a moral objection but I don’t really see what the problem is - it’s not like I’m suggesting this as a bedtime story for the children - they’re already asleep. If they wake up I will go to them, but I don’t see why I shouldn’t read on my kindle when they’re sleeping - or what business of my sisters it is what I read…

Am I being unreasonable? (Or immoral?!)

Love a bit of IPB 😂 your sister is strange. My sister doesn't read romance/smut but she would never in a million years say something like that to me. Just tell her you are reading a biography about John major or something equally boring. That should shut her up. Or tell her she could find an alternative baby sitter and you'll be off home to read in peace

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 28/10/2023 21:58

It’s non of her business. Just don’t tell her.

CuteOrangeElephant · 28/10/2023 22:01

Love IPB!

Your sister is being weird.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 28/10/2023 22:01

Just laugh at her and promise not to play porn loudly on her tv.

Riverlee · 28/10/2023 22:03

How weird.

MajorBarbara · 28/10/2023 22:04

Is your sister going to tell you not to think or read about anything sexual in her house, in case the vibes spill out and infect her kids? Because that is what this comes down to? Has she 'got the mental health' as my mum calls it?

Whattodo112222 · 28/10/2023 22:04

Who cares for God sake

Loubelle70 · 28/10/2023 22:06

Shes controlling OP if she wont allow you to read your own stuff. Prudish yes..my sister is same..but if she said that i wouldn't babysit again.

GinGinAllTheGin · 28/10/2023 22:08

Brilliant! This is the answer for next time she mentions this… as I’m sure she will 🤣

This is outrageous! Does your sister dictate how many cups of tea you can drink too or which channels you can watch on the tv? (Assuming you’re allowed to watch tv?!)

IncomingTraffic · 28/10/2023 22:16

I’d just tell her that she will need to find a different babysitter if she’s going to dictate what you can and can’t read.

It doesn’t matter if she’s prudish. She should be grateful you’re babysitting and stop trying to control what you’re allowed to read. Does she also want to control what you think?

Allinadayswork80 · 28/10/2023 22:21

Absolutely bizarre! I don’t know what else to say! One of the weirdest things I’ve heard!

lunar1 · 28/10/2023 22:24

Makes you wonder how she managed to have the second child at the very least!

Who are you responding to?

JustAnotherManicMomday · 28/10/2023 22:29

My response would be in that case I'm going home. Unless she's paying you to be there she cannot tell you your not able to read on your own device that wascharged at home using your own electric. It's nuts.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/10/2023 22:40

Are you prone to masturbating on her sofa? Otherwise really what business is it of hers? Tell her you took her advice and you're reading War and Peace. Or that you're happy to NOT babysit for her. Is she paying you?

Apparently John Major had quite the torrid affair with Edwina Currie. I'm clutching my pearls as I type.

Fouramclub · 28/10/2023 22:52

@TeaGinandFags oh lord I forgot about that. Ok scratch the John Major suggestion in case that turns out to be as smutty as IPB. Edward Heath looks suitably boring... 😂

10HailMarys · 28/10/2023 23:16

If this was real, clearly your sister would be insane, but it’s a moot point because this absolutely did not happen

Mariposista · 28/10/2023 23:16

How on Earth did your sister manage to get pregnant if she thinks that anything remotely sexual is disgusting? hahahahaha she needs a reality check.

FWIW my friend once read 50 shades of grey on her kindle during a Bible study group (it had gone on for 3 hours). I told that story to my vicar friend (not the same church haha) and she thought it was hilarious.

Happy reading!

KnowledgeableMomma · 29/10/2023 02:45

"Hey Sis--you don't get to tell free babysitters what they read to themselves. If you'd like my Kindle out of the house, come back home so I can go."

On another note, I would also totally recommend the Ice Planet Barbarian series (and most anything Ruby Dixon! 😊). YANBU obviously.

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 29/10/2023 03:56

I love those books. Which one are you up to? Maybe just stay home so you can read.
