Driveway access blocked

Had a certain phone company here this morning I assume to connect faster broadband for next door. The problem is all the cable installation part of it is under a drain cover at the end of our drive, so cover is lifted off, red barrier put round and unable to get car off our own drive. Apparently the connection? for many houses in the close now under here, so assuming this is going to be a common occurrence. My point is this is the second time this has happened now, is it too much to ask for the engineer to knock and ask if we needed to go out and use the car before starting this work? I just think a little common decency wouldn't go a miss or is it just me?

They'll be able to let you out of there I'm sure - often a plank of wood goes down from memory

Screwballs · 28/10/2023 12:42

So you don't need to get out and aren't being inconvenienced, you're just here to moan? Honestly, it's Saturday, cheer up.

Yes that's very odd

Are you nervous around strange blokes? If not, you could go out and give them a cheery Hello and ask how long they're likely to be. If it's more than a day, you could say that you'll need to get the car out at X time tomorrow, or whatever.

It's a long drive, the car is further up and they've now gone. Next time I'll get the engineer to strike a pose!

If they have gone why didn't you juts say so instead of going out and taking a picture of nothing Confused

Such dramatics

EvenBetta · 28/10/2023 12:52

So you don’t need to go out, and the workmen have now left-a complete non issue. 😄

Saucery · 28/10/2023 12:52

They probably just thought you’d ask if you needed to go out. We always ask how long they’ll be there if we need to go out that day and they are always polite and helpful, I don’t see why ‘your’ workmen would be any different?
I’d ask if there’s a next time.

Sirzy · 28/10/2023 12:53

How long was it actually blocked for?

Wonkasworld · 28/10/2023 12:53

I used to live in an end terrace, where water boards would block off my drive. Most times they knocked to let me know. It's common sense, not just courteous.

I took that picture as someone wanted a diagram. Obviously, I need to get over it, maybe I'll invite neighbours to stick their wheelie bins there as well as it's no big deal!

Here we go. The classic MN strop because people don’t agree with you.

rwalker · 28/10/2023 13:06

I work for openreach that’s a footway box chances are there work at a nearby box and going between the 2 nothing major
it’s just takes time to packing everything away as you can’t leave it open unguarded
Just ask them and they’ll shut it for you so u can get get out

i wouldn’t of knocked first as you generally get shit /abuse from the general public and a 1000 and 1 irrelevant question about what your doing and will it affect them

I get stroppy when I get stroppy comments. Other people have disagreed and that's fine but some are just being rude for no reason.

I'm not sure what your neighbours have to do with it, not their bins, however it IS no big deal as by the time you took the picture they had gone. You didn't say so until it was pointed out to you that the picture shows clear access. You most definitely were being dramatic

MargaretThursday · 28/10/2023 13:11

We have similar at the end of our drive.

There's been a couple of times when I've needed to go out and they've been busy, and I've popped down and asked them. They've always offered to move straight away to let me go out, normally I ask how long they're going to be and then decide whether to wait or not.

They've always been very polite and apologetic to me. They're rarely there long, so don't come and ask first. the one time they were going to be a half a day they did knock at the door and I moved the car onto the road.

So you would rather go to the trouble to pack up than ask if it's OK to work, uninterrupted? That doesn't make sense. Notwithstanding you're likely to get more abuse if you've not knocked on the door first.

Just speak to him, you're frothing about nothing

frothing about nothing

This should be the personal motto for a lot of posters on MN, what-if-itus seems to be the norm.

A few years back I ordered 1.5 tons of wood for the burner, told OH to move the car off the drive before they came, they came, he hadn't moved it and they still dumped the wood on the drive! Took ages to move enough to get out.

She's having her driveway blocked, as I did. Not only by workmen but by inconsiderate tossers. When it's happening to you, whether you're intending to go out or not, it's stressful. Has it happened to you?

It’s happened to me. I asked them to move when I need to go out and they moved.

No big deal.

bullseyeboat · 28/10/2023 13:16

@Wonkasworld

Again, I said OP was being dramatic after the block had been lifted. OP posted a picture and was 'keeping it up' rather then simply saying 'they have left now'.

Whether I have been blocked has nothing to do with it, if I needed out, again which OP did not, I would have asked them.

From experience people are dicks there say there going out NOW and make u wait 20 minutes or don’t go out at all
you move the barriers away and the concrete cover slides back on and the can drive over it no need to pack anything away
you can have the box shut by the time they’ve started the car and got there seatbelts on
