I’ve had 1989 TV on all day and she’s just magic 🥰

I think she's OK, but I can't get excited. She's vanilla to me - like Ed Sheeran.

EmmaEmerald · 27/10/2023 21:39

I don't recall ever seeing a thread where a male songwriter got trashed, or had people comment on looks etc and question whether they write their own songs.

Christine of Christine and the Queens said she gets male artists asking if she understands about music production, I daresay MNers would ask her the same question.

Interesting lyrics but I find her songs very dull from the music / tune point of view. It all seems to have a range of about three notes, and her voice is forgettable. Not for me but I accept she is highly respected and hugely popular. I also think she is a positive role model for young girls.

I agree with this. I find her incredibly dull and unoriginal but accept that others feel very differently. I don't think she's exceptional though.

stayathomer · 27/10/2023 21:42

I do love a lot of her stuff but actually I think there’s a lot of standout music in the last few years- especially pop wise so I definitely wouldn’t hold her up as once in a generation. I do definitely appreciate the graft she’s put in to get her work back though

EmmaEmerald · 27/10/2023 21:43

DeeCee give it forty years and people worldwide will still have "Lover" as their main wedding song but that won't be good enough for you.

Students will be listening to Anti Hero, globally, in 40 years, but that won't be good enough for you.

CantFindTheBeat · 27/10/2023 21:43

@PrincessHoneysuckle

On a thread talking about talent, your contribution is 'her hair is wispy'.

What a bitter person you must be.

She's good.. but needs a different theme.

She writes about a variety of things already, or do you assume as she's a woman and the press gave her a hard time for it she just writes about men she's dated?

You would have a point if white people hadn’t ripped off black music for decades, even Elvis did it.

I mentioned Elvis getting a massive leg up by singing other peoples songs (in this case songs belonging to black artists who were ignored by racist america). It took the British Invasion bands (who did listen to black american artists) to introduce to white america songs by people from their own country.

Similarly, as someone mentioned, Swift being a "wholesome" white girl has given her a massive leg up. Yes she has talent, but her image has played a major role in her status today.

I’ve not seen a question mark over him writing his own songs but I’ve seen Ed Sheeran torn apart on here for his looks. I think it was a thread on singers you don’t rate or something. Was horrible

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 27/10/2023 21:44

Regarding the age of her fans... I participate in a Taylor thread on another forum and we recently did a poll to see what age we all were. There were nearly 400 responses and 75% of us were over 30. This isn't representative of her entire fanbase probably, yeah, but still.

endlessfall · 27/10/2023 21:45

So, she is:

Basic and problematic at same.

Has wispy hair.

Is considered not pretty enough.

Doesn't write every lyric by herself.

Is white.

Isn't Kayne.

Writes songs that it is suspected that she knows that people will want to listen to.

Her parents have paid for her success.

I'm definitely feeling that Taylor can't win and I'm not a huge fan just the mum of one.

@EmmaEmerald that is not the hill I am willing to die on as I am generally into My Dying Bride, Type-O-Negative and Katatonia type of music cough bats and ravens fly out Me personally (and many - MANY more) people would appreciate Taylor if she would be a tad more daring? So far it's been played a bit too safe, obviously, Taylor does not owe us shit but surely a woman who has the guts to screw recording labels twice over is capable of SO much more than "lavender haze"

There's a lot more music around though, it's not like we all watch TOTP or something.

I recall Ryan Adams tweeting that he'd only just heard of Lord Huron and that surprised me.

Tabbygabby · 27/10/2023 21:47

I suspect the point is more that her hair and her looks aren't relevant to how good of a songwriter she is.

Teder · 27/10/2023 21:47

I have no issues with not liking certain artists (people are entitled to their own taste) but coming on to make inane comments about their looks is pathetic. I agree many are aimed at women but I’ve seen about men too including Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 27/10/2023 21:47

I don’t think she does have a particularly wholesome image, the majority of the press she gets is about who she’s dating now and what songs she’s written about who. The press trying to slut shame her all the time doesn’t scream wholesome image projection to me. Plus having seen the cinema show there were definitely a couple of risqué moments I wanted to cover DDs eyes over (we were both too busy dancing for me to do so 😁)

Over a hundred million people worldwide registered for tickets for her tour. A few people on mumsnet claiming not to know any of her songs isn’t really relevant in comparison.

You’re wrong. Someone on another thread has paid £1500 just to get hold of two tickets to her tour on a dodgy website. That’s the real market price of tickets to see a megastar.

I could say the same for some huuuuge artists but it doesn’t make them not sensational, it means it’s not my taste.
