I quite like Alanis Morisette as a singer and a person but calling 10 thousand spoons when all you need is a knife ironic is shit songwriting.

Wasn't there a whole comedian sketch (Ed byrne, I think) about how most of the events in that song were unfortunate not ironci?

I do love AM but this is probably my least favourite song

RedRiverShore4 · 28/10/2023 08:29

A lot of her fans seem to be the age to have teenage daughters so would be influenced by that

millymoo1202 · 28/10/2023 08:35

I had this exact conversation with my 22 year old daughter last night. We’re going to Dublin to see her next year and she says she thinks she’ll cry!! 😫 Daughter not me obvs 🤣

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 28/10/2023 08:38

Honestly... Shake It Off is to her entire discography as Yellow Submarine is to The Beatles, or Bicycle to Queen. Freddie Mercury wrote Bicycle but I don't see anyone bringing that up and saying he only wrote cheesy pop songs.

"Its highly unusual for a modern female artist to write about their emotions and experiences without centering or trying to appeal to men"

What?!! Have you been living under a rock for the last 50 years? I wouldn't even know where to begin to list the many, many female singer/songwriters who have done just that since the early 70s, and many on that list who have far more style and ability than TS Confused

GreenVelvetCushions · 28/10/2023 08:40

Meh

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 28/10/2023 08:41

She's massively overrated and not that talented. Aren't all of her songs about her break ups with various celebs?

I don't get the hype either. I suppose she has great PR.

//

Nope. Her music is about so much more than celeb break ups

The 70s isn't modern, hate to say it sis but thay was 50 plus years ago now. In the last decade or so there have been few women who have had mainstream success and made a cultural impact who haven't pondered to men. Yes there are a few, many of which like TS people often feel the need to criticise beyond I just don't like their songs. Go on though, let's hear the list always keen to discover new music.

I was aware of her as being a young country singer , and I'd caught her songs on tv etc. I'd heard her song with Ed Sheeran called Everything has Changed and loved it (it's a beautiful song ) I was on a plane coming back from somewhere and 1989 had just came out. I listened to it as I had nothing better to do and I was pleasantly impressed.
I'm a bit bemused by the level of obsession that her fans display but I don't mind her. My daughter likes her and we listen to her a lot in the car etc.
I highly doubt that people have never heard any of her songs - surely everyone has heard Shake it off somewhere at some point ? And if anyone watches The Bear I doubt anyone didn't cheer when Cousin Richie was singing Love Story in the car in the Forks episode . I cried a little to be honest!
So anyway - yeah I think she's a talented songwriter and she's pretty harmless

Oh I loved that moment in The Bear Grin

megletthesecond · 28/10/2023 08:47

"She's not widely known outside her very young demographic."
Why have the rest of my team at work all registered for Eras tickets then?

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 28/10/2023 08:50

Sorry OP I don’t get the fascination either but I say the same about Adele she just depresses me.

The killers on the other hand and Brandon flowers I LOVE them. Mr brightside, flesh and bone, confessions of a king just amazing and phenomenal live

MrsMurphyIWish · 28/10/2023 08:53

Some people get so snobbish about music. I’ve been and watched The Prodigy, Oasis, Blur, Stone Roses and Linkin Park is blasting in my car most days. However, I can appreciate TS’s music. Yes, “Shake it off” is a bit naff (IMO) but I still sing the lyrics. After watching “the eras” at the cinema I have a new found admiration for her and have been singing “Vigilante Shit” since I got up.

Digimoor · 27/10/2023 20:04

No, she's like Ed Sheeran

Once in a generation is more like Kanye

Kanye? I hope you are joking

HappiestSleeping · 28/10/2023 08:55

Tabbygabby · 28/10/2023 08:14

The ones you've heard might sound the same, there is no way they all sound the same because they don't.

Quite agree. I did add that I can only go by what's been played on the radio. I certainly haven't heard every song she's ever written. Assuming the radio play the popular ones, they all sound the same. To me, at least.

JudyGemstone · 28/10/2023 08:57

My 16 year old is a fan and we spend quite a lot of time in the car so I have heard all her albums pretty much and am v familiar with all her music, the later stuff more so.

she is good at writing lyrics and telling stories but a lot of the music is quite bland and forgettable, easy to sing a long too but not especially complex or interesting. Which is fine! Would agree the comparison with Ed Sheeran is pretty apt.

Her voice is good enough for the music she does but she’s not an outstanding singer like say LDR is (who incidentally is very much not a fraud/industry plant and grafted her way to success over many years)

I do think as a person she’s great, definitely s seems fun and a savvy businesswoman and there is a lot to admire about her. Being relatable to teens/young women is her usp.

SD1978 · 28/10/2023 09:00

No. I wouldn't say the lyrics are all that profound, but she is very popular, and kids like her- she's a superstar, but it's not because she has particularly insightful lyrics.

margotrose · 28/10/2023 09:10

Unithorn · 28/10/2023 08:17

Its highly unusual for a modern female artist to write about their emotions and experiences without centering or trying to appeal to men, some people can't handle it so not surprised some can't just leave it at I don't like it myself and go to lengths and tie themselves in knots to explain just how much they hate her and her music.

But her fans also seem to go to extreme lengths to argue that she's the most amazing singer to ever walk the earth rather than just being happy to say "she's talented and I like her".

CarPour · 28/10/2023 09:19

Her music is very dull. She has written a few catchy choruses but other than that I find her music to be bland. There's probably a few decent songs but a lot of what she's written is very bland

No one on this thread has posted any particularly revolutionary or interesting lyrics. Some of them are relatable. She writes about emotional topics sometimes which people can relate to but I don't think these songs are the best lyrics in the world right now, and they are often quite easy cliches

WeeStyleIcon · 28/10/2023 09:19

No her fans just want to be allowed to enjoy her music without being chased by people who want to point out (to her fans) that she,'s over rated.

It's strange. Anybody else that I'm a fan of, people just let you be a fan. People want to take her down.
If you don't get her, just move along.

If only.

MangosteenSoda · 28/10/2023 09:21

I love late nineties and early 00s guitar bands (so my age range is easily guessable there). Early Taylor sort of bypassed me because I was a bit too old to appreciate that kind of music at the time, so I only knew of her biggest hits. Roll on the pandemic and Folklore and Evermore really opened my eyes (and ears) to her. I think she’s a genuinely great lyricist. I’m probably never going to go back as far as her first three albums because I’m really not the demographic who is going to resonate with that, but that doesn’t mean I think they are bad.

I really don’t understand the vitriol. If you don’t like someone’s music, surely that’s that. No need to belittle, hate etc.

CarPour · 28/10/2023 09:21

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 27/10/2023 21:38

I've posted lyrics I love on a similar thread a few months ago and had people saying they didn't get it. So I'll direct you to songs.

Clean
Tolerate it
Would've, could've should've
Dear John
Marjorie
You're on your own kid
Right where you left me
Last kiss
Bigger than the whole sky
New Romantics
Death by a thousand cuts

If you can listen to 5 songs from that list, any 5, and still say she's not great, then fair enough.

Posting these songs doesn't help the idea that she's dull

There's nothing interesting or enjoyable about these songs. Would've could've should've has a catchy section, as does your own your own kid and dear John. But I couldn't make it through a whole concert of music like this.

This is a thread about her being the greatest songwriters of a generation . There's obviously going to be a lot of criticism of Taylor on this thread. Obviously people are going to point out she's overrated on a thread that's over rating her

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 28/10/2023 00:01

And they are all men.

I got that. I was being facetious.

Sortyourlifeout · 28/10/2023 09:26

PlusOneTwoThree · 27/10/2023 20:01

I quite like her, my daughter loves her but I couldn’t get tickets for less than £1200 so unfortunately we have to have lots of concerts in the kitchen

Her songs are easy to sing along to and usually have some kind of catchy hook
However I don’t rate her as an amazing songwriter no
I think the reason she appeals to so many teenage girls is because she writes like one

I mean - “sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby, and I’m a monster on the hill” … what?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Someone might have responded already, but I don't have time to look through the comments.

Odeon are streaming her current concert, is it worth looking into that?

Tread very carefully all you who don't think Taylor Swift is a genius. Her fans have a huge chip on their collective shoulders. This thread has gone the way of all the others - evangelical Swifties quoting lyrics at you and accusing you of snobbery, ignorance and misogyny. You MUST listen to x, y or z or you're not allowed to have an opinion. Every. Single. Thread.

There have been plenty of people who don’t like the music, and have clearly said so. That’s fair enough. We’d be boring if we were the same! Some people, however, have gone one step further and chosen to criticise and patronise people who do like her music. I don’t care if people critique her music (not my problem) but don’t come for me - a listener who does enjoy it.
