I’ve had 1989 TV on all day and she’s just magic 🥰

Ironic is still played on the radio.

Alanis just feels alot more real, authentic.

That album of hers was a cultural monster. I really cant see Taylor coming close to it.

And? Radio is a dead media to the younger generations and different stations play a huge array. Her impact isn't any greater even contextually for the time than Taylors is. Again I'm a huge fan of AM but just curious as to why people don't think anyone will know the music of someone who has had a huge cultural impact in 4 decades time; even if her music isn't thought of highly by then. There's some actual crap that wasn't even overly popular or influential that's still played or people know from 40 years ago!

Portakalkedi · 27/10/2023 22:59

I've also never heard any of her songs ...

I'd be interested to see a list from this year. Seven years ago is a long time in music.

is radio much of a thing now?

therealcookiemonster · 27/10/2023 23:01

@EmmaEmerald I just do? I find a lot of things idiotic, as other people do as well I am sure? I'm pretty sure, you might find some of the music I listen to pretty crap and maybe idiotic? just the way it is...

DeeCee77 · 27/10/2023 23:02

Snowdayplease · 27/10/2023 22:48

Hasn't she won lots of Grammys? Maybe they give them out in cereal boxes these days.

Harry Styles the Cheshire baker, plucked out by Simon Cowell (a chief culprit in destroying authentic pop music) to go into his boy"band", won a Grammy (a few of them).

Freddie Mecury won goose egg, nada, zilch, when it comes to Grammys.

They've always been worthless, now it's just clownish.

HomeatRoseCottage · 27/10/2023 23:04

DeeCee77 · 27/10/2023 22:27

That's true, but she's still current so more will know her back catalogue.

What about when she no longer is current (or even flavour of the month)?

Alanis Morissette who I just mentioned, I think that's a decent comparison. She has been out of the limelight (relatively speaking) for quite a while, but her music is still very much relevant.

"Ironic"...sorry Taylor you have nothing quite like that.

I like Alanis Morisette but is she still super relevant? I can’t think when I last heard a song of hers on the radio or used in a piece of media.

I also think it’s note worthy and impressive in and of itself that Taylor has been ‘current’ / flavour of the month for as long as she has. She’s coming up on 20 years in the industry and is not only more successful than she has ever been but is objectively one of the (if not THE) most successful musicians in the world right now.

I've not heard one song of hers.

You're not missing anything. They all sound the same. Each to their own though.

StillWantingADog · 27/10/2023 23:08

I think she’s likeable and talented but not exceptionally so.
In fifty years her recent songs will be broadly forgotten.
that said she may still be banging our new songs in fifty years at this rate

I see it as a strong word, sounds like you don't. Oh well.

FiddleLeaf · 27/10/2023 23:08

YANBU - I think she’s such a brilliant storyteller & a marketing genius.

I just had a look at the list of the Grammy best album winners. There are definitely a lot of… unusual… decisions in hindsight!

@23Oct her voice is literally like nails down the blackboard for me. don't want to torture myself. and I shouldn't have to research a song to feel the complexity. truly developed music touches your soul without explanation... just like one laughs at a good joke without explanation.

I agree with this, there are once in a generation songwriters and once in a generation songs that touch you in your soul. Like The Chain, or I Want to Break Free or Brothers in Arms (showing my age now) I don't know if TS is quite there yet although clearly others feel differently but she's still young. I think there's a good chance she'll go back to her more folksy roots and start producing music that's a bit more soulful in the future. Ed Sheeran is quite good at producing that one song but he goes, quite cynically I think, after a market for each song- the wedding first dance song (thinking out loud or perfect) for example.

Tiredalwaystired · 27/10/2023 23:10

Nope. Not even close.

Nice enough tunes, but not that many standouts.

The only reason she will be remembered in a decade is there isn’t anyone really competing in that space - music is more about a song than a singer these days, and the artist is increasingly ephemeral.

Panaa · 27/10/2023 23:10

Dotcheck · 27/10/2023 22:50

Er….

How convenient that you can just choose to decide he isnt

It wasn't conveniently choosing.

I applied critical thinking. I actually read a lot about it and considered it from a lot of angles.

EmmaEmerald · 27/10/2023 23:12

MeinKraft "I think there's a good chance she'll go back to her more folksy roots and start producing music that's a bit more soulful in the future."

that's how I see Folklore and Evermore.

ElleCapitaine · 27/10/2023 23:14

She rocks. I’m not even a fan. She has catchy tunes, but she kicks butt, she doesn’t take any shit, a fantastic business woman, and she’s a brilliant role model for young women. She demands equality, and she gets it.

Tiredalwaystired · 27/10/2023 23:15

I would say you’ll only be able to tell if she is of the calibre you’re talking about if future generations appreciate her as you do.

My teenage daughter is all about Bowie, Queen and ABBA. All acts thoroughly deserving of their status in music. She actually says that more recent music is very bland and she much prefers the seventies and eighties.

idontknowhowigotoverit · 27/10/2023 23:15

I quite like Alanis Morisette as a singer and a person but calling 10 thousand spoons when all you need is a knife ironic is shit songwriting.

Wasn't there a whole comedian sketch (Ed byrne, I think) about how most of the events in that song were unfortunate not ironci?

tennesseewhiskey1 · 27/10/2023 23:16

I mean - she’s good. Looks great. Her lyrics tell a story that would appeal to younger kids - which is her demographic really. I like her - is she standout? Probably for now, but if we’re talking about now- I prefer Ed Sheeren or Lewis. Adele has an amazing voice - way way way better. And I mean - you always know what Taylor is going around write about - some guy or an ex. I would not pay £1200 to see her. I mean - there have been so many better songwriters and songs that will be remembered more than any of hers. She got some decent catchy tunes tho - I really like August.

idontknowhowigotoverit · 27/10/2023 23:16

"it's like ra (ayaaaa)ain on your wedding day"

Basically not ideal.

Not remotely ironic.

Don't remember being blown away by the observation as a sixth former, sorry.

therealcookiemonster · 27/10/2023 23:18

@EmmaEmerald or I am a grumpy old hag? which I am btw, very happily lol.

I’ve said it twenty times on the thread already but it bears repeating - as a matter of objective fact her demographic is not younger kids, it’s predominantly women aged 25 to 45 (and it’s sexist to persist in claiming otherwise), and her songs are not remotely all about some guy or an ex (more misogyny…)

Good question. Ratings look decent

No Swift in that best-selling albums list I hope you noticed. Her impact is hard to quantify.

MeinKraft · 27/10/2023 23:19

Adele undoubtedly has a better voice, but she's also a pain in the arse.

I don’t think a single circumstance in the whole song is actually ironic. Maybe that’s the point and it’s all very meta 😂
