Dog annoying us in restaurant

Onthegreeen · 27/10/2023 14:17

I was in a restaurant with a friend this morning. A dog at the next table kept wandering over around our table, putting his head onto our laps, swishing his tail against us etc.
We asked the owner if she could keep him at her own table at which point she said it was a dog friendly cafe and he was entitled to be there.
So were we, but we weren't entitled to wander around other tables annoying people. Children are welcome in the cafe but they're not entitled to go up and sit on some random customer's lap.

We couldn't be bothered getting into an argument so we just left. But AIBU to think she was bloody rude and self entitled.

I absolutely hate this new culture of dog friendliness everywhere. I totally agree with you. I don't dislike dogs or other people's children or other adults, but I want to enjoy my meal in peace with the people I chose to come with. It's so rude to let your dog wander up and annoy people. Unfortunately the type that does this is never going to listen to you asking nicely, because they wouldn't allow their dog to do it in the first place if they were a reasonable thoughtful human being. I would've done the same as you OP - but also told the staff. If they didn't handle it well I would leave a Google and TripAdvisor review about it.

Hate it. I would not enjoy eating somewhere where a dog is sitting near or in the resteraunt. Allergies aside, I fucking hate the smell of dogs, hate the hair issue too. It's all just so entitled, which seems the way of it all atm. Id like to plonk a 2 year old on the lap of annoying dog owners, preferably with a shit filled nappy and manky hands to touch.

Isn't there a variation of the same post EVERY week? YABU it's the most boring subject.

LakieLady · 27/10/2023 18:04

Taking an animal with you when you go out is so unnecessary.

Not if you're on holiday with them. You can't leave them unaccompanied in most holiday accommodation and definitely not if camping. You have to take them everywhere with you.

And not if you're going to be out for a long time, unless you have a friend or neighbour who can pop round and let them out.

I had dogs for more than 3 decades, and they came most places with me. They were very well behaved in pubs and cafes, and when visiting friends & family (DM and MIL both hated it if we visited without them).

I would never have let them just roam around a pub or cafe though, they were always kept on a short lead and they were a small breed, so would snooze under a table without anyone noticing much of the time.

But I also think for a lot of pubs and cafes, especially in rural areas, there's a business case for allowing dogs in. Pubs round my way are full of dogs at weekends because people stop there for lunch when out on all-day walks. In the week, they're empty at lunchtimes most of the time.

bonzaitree · 27/10/2023 18:05

Id just keep my dog under the table and on a short lead if it were me.

UnRavellingFast · 27/10/2023 18:06

Urgh I remember walking to work through the park and a dog leapt all over me. I was polite even tho my work clothes were being muddied. The owner marched up and screamed at me for ‘encouraging him!’ The last thing I would have done esp in work suit and tights. I think it was the silly cow’s preemptive strike or something.

Nothanksthanksanyway · 27/10/2023 18:07

I would have told the owner straight out to keep their dog away from me.

I hate how entitled dog owners have become lately.

It’s clearly a love/hate situation with the current dog friendly culture. The fact there are such frequent posts about it point to it being a problem for a lot of people and they are entitled to complain if they want to !

Children have to learn how to behave in a whole host of new environments, including public places such as restaurants and cafes. Of course they should be prepared beforehand, but there is a first experience for lots of things.

Letting your dog wander off lead isn't comparable in the slightest because it's unnecessary.

It's not necessary for children to be leaving their seats in a restaurant, either.

Dweetfidilove · 27/10/2023 18:12

If this trend is catching on I guess I’ll have to check which restaurants are dog friendly before making reservations.
Kmdt 😔

I think you sound whiny - you have asked. I said you were probably right. It’s just all a bit cat’s bum mouth.

Loads of these posts are just really prissy. As though the posters imagine life should be really ordered instead of being able to deal with a dog. Most busy, sane, normal people would already have forgotten it. You’ve gone home and started a thread in righteousness.

I think you’re whining more than op is! People shouldn’t have to ‘deal with a dog’ if they don’t want to, especially in a restaurant.

sollenwir · 27/10/2023 18:16

LaurieStrode · 27/10/2023 18:11

It's not necessary for children to be leaving their seats in a restaurant, either.

Clearly they shouldn't be bothering people, but there are definitely reasons to leave their seats - toilet, to speak to someone at another table (in bigger groups), to go to a buffet/drink section and so on.

CatMadam · 27/10/2023 18:18

Of course YANBU, what an entitled twit of an owner! I hate it when cafes etc allow dogs. I went to one I didn’t realise was dog-friendly until the stench of wet dog hit me, it was absolutely disgusting. My MIL takes her ridiculous, badly trained cockapoo with her wherever she goes, she let it sit on the bench in cafe Nero and lick the table last time I saw her 🤢

Jewelspun · 27/10/2023 18:19

Who remembers this stupidity?

I bet there are some on here who thought it was a good idea! 😩

... and today's dog hater thred is:

DOG ANNOYING US IN RESTAURANT

Grow up! I love dogs, I volunteer with assistance dogs so take our current dog into loads of cafes, shops and restaurants. I would be mortified if they behaved like this and would think it my responsibility to remove them immediately. As would any responsible dog owner.

It's not dog-hating at all. The dogs are not knowingly doing anything wrong. It's the selfish owners who are at fault. 😳

Do you think you might have misplaced rage @PTSDBarbiegirl ? You are painting quite an extreme, and unpleasant picture of what is a dog just being a dog.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 27/10/2023 18:22

Growing up my family had dogs but I don't have one as an adult. I'm genuinely surprised that people take their dogs everywhere nowadays. The pub I can see why people might want to bring their dog but I don't want them wandering around, same as small children. However, the last few weeks I've had a husky puppy lunge at me whilst shopping for a new fireplace. Then the next week a very boisterous boxer taking up the whole aisle in a tile shop. How can the owners concentrate on making a purchase whilst trying to manhandle their dogs out the way of other shoppers. It baffles me.

bakermummy21 · 27/10/2023 18:28

Apparently the new law in Spain is
A cafe must display a sign outside to say if dogs are allowed or not. The dog must be on a short leash and must not disturb other customers.
Maybe we need that here too

I put YANBU because technically you're not but YABU for not being overjoyed that a dog was making your acquaintance 😝I love dogs.

Canisaysomething · 27/10/2023 18:41

I watched “dogs behaving very badly” the other day. The guy who trains dogs said there’s been an obvious increase in pampered pooches who aren’t under control. You don’t have to be a dog hater to have observed this cultural change.

Just as I'm entitled to point out, it's the same discussion over and over again 😴.

ohtowinthelottery · 27/10/2023 19:26

We went for lunch at a pub that had undergone a massive refurbishment and rebranded itself as a bistro type pub with posh food and prices to go with it. After we had ordered some people arrived at the next table yo us with a dog. They treated the dog like a child and had it sitting on a seat at the table and they were feeding it from their plates. All this was observed by the waiting staff. Whilst the dog didn't interact with our table, I won't be returning to anywhere that allows dogs to sit at the table. Dogs should be on the floor under the table.

Same here, my dog is large, but kept on short lead and usually very well behaved. when we are on holiday She gets a lot of attention and a lot of compliments. If she has an off day we leave.
We also live in an area where pubs/ cafes know the dog owner ££ keeps business going during off peak season.
