Dog annoying us in restaurant

Onthegreeen · 27/10/2023 14:17

I was in a restaurant with a friend this morning. A dog at the next table kept wandering over around our table, putting his head onto our laps, swishing his tail against us etc.
We asked the owner if she could keep him at her own table at which point she said it was a dog friendly cafe and he was entitled to be there.
So were we, but we weren't entitled to wander around other tables annoying people. Children are welcome in the cafe but they're not entitled to go up and sit on some random customer's lap.

We couldn't be bothered getting into an argument so we just left. But AIBU to think she was bloody rude and self entitled.

And children aren’t to allowed to climb and sniff around other people. Even though they’re, you know, human.

You sure about that?

Personally I can't stand either anywhere near me

Got to love equality!

What is whiny and intolerant about not wanting a stranger's dog to annoy us when we're trying to sit quietly minding our own business in a cafe?

I think you sound whiny - you have asked. I said you were probably right. It’s just all a bit cat’s bum mouth.

Loads of these posts are just really prissy. As though the posters imagine life should be really ordered instead of being able to deal with a dog. Most busy, sane, normal people would already have forgotten it. You’ve gone home and started a thread in righteousness.

ExtraOnions · 27/10/2023 17:08

I have a dog allergy … not that the “fur baby” lot would care.
A whole generation of dogs that can’t be left at home, or be left clone because they have been brought up like a child.

Redebs · 27/10/2023 16:34

Can we stop comparing dogs to children please?
It's ridiculous!
Dogs are animals.

Neither should cause inconvenience to other customers by being allowed to walk around the premises and go up to other people's tables.

@Riola I predicted that wouldn't last long - dogs definitely do not need to be in a shopping centre like Silverburn, unless they are official assistance dogs.

There's one in Cambridge that started letting dogs in, I was in John Lewis and shocked to see dogs in there last year. I don't like dogs, I'm actually quite scared of them after being bitten a couple of times.

I also work in a shop that allows dogs (which I didn't know when I started working there) and some people bring them in without a lead. Chaos ensues as they end up running round the warehouse. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I got chased by one a little while ago. 😭 Considering some of the things we sell you'd think people would have more sense! There's a reason we have to wear safety boots, dogs paws are far more delicate. Not to mention if there's a chemical spill.

On the flip side, my friend has a big chocolate Labrador. I was round her house not long after something that had really upset me had happened. Her dog sensed it and ended up with her head in my lap, she knew I needed a cuddle, as did my other friend's cats when I was at her house a few days later.

ManchesterLu · 27/10/2023 17:12

YANBU. A word with the owners might help for the future, as obviously they won't want people being put off coming back to them.

localnotail · 27/10/2023 17:14

oooh, I'm in the minority, but I would love that! I love dogs, and kiddies. I know, I'm weird.

sollenwir · 27/10/2023 17:16

@SapphireSeptember oh yes, while some dogs and their owners can be annoying there are also some lovely dogs out there, who seem very tuned in to their owners and sometimes others. I have met some amazing and gorgeous dogs, I just don't appreciate owners thinking it's ok for their dog to do as it pleases around me, in a public place.

Mydogmybestfriend · 27/10/2023 17:17

Owner is very entitled.

I am very busy, sane and normal. I also found a woman very rude in a cafe today and started a thread on MN about it. That's what AIBU is for. If you don't agree that the dog was annoying fine. But why are you annoyed that I started a thread about it?

Nothing weird about loving children and dogs. I don't think anyone said or implied that.

The amount of users trying to sound quirky by insulting dogs is so cringe
I agree the owners were rude but yuk to "flea bitten mongrel" you can tell who has no friends and bashes their keyboard all day
Cringe as f

Mydogmybestfriend · 27/10/2023 17:27

Op I wouldn't leave a review though because it's not the cafe owners fault. The waitress/waiter should have said something instead of walking by.

localnotail · 27/10/2023 17:28

@Onthegreeen I would not find this situation unpleasant or annoying, but judging from the feedback most people on here would.

Nah, I'd be more than happy to fuss the dog, I like them.

booksandbeans · 27/10/2023 17:32

I make my choice by not eating in dog friendly cafes\ restaurants. A dogs manners reflects the owners so no use expecting any leeway from them.

Ragwort · 27/10/2023 17:34

YANBU - we were out today for coffee in a Cotswold town (and yes, it's a treat for us not a daily occurrence). Every cafe I looked in had 'dog friendly notice' and dogs roaming around.

Eventually we found a wonderful old fashioned coaching inn, with a clear sign saying 'no dogs' and 'no children under 5'. Grin. It was wonderful inside, roaring log fire, decent coffee served to us in a relaxing lounge and peace and quiet.

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 27/10/2023 17:35

Our dog knew he had to sit quietly under the table or lie under the chairs, with an odd titbit for being good. Incredibly rude OP.

So So you actually know me in RL?

If you did, you would know my dogs and their behaviour around other people...

Judging by your post however it is very unlikely that you know me in RL.

Thankfully I don’t. But whilst most people have addressed the situation in the OP with a thought-out response, your go-to was to whine about ‘another’ thread complaining about dogs. Says a lot about your selfish attitude to dog-ownership really.

What a strange conclusion. A poster dislikes dogs, so you conclude they have no friends and sit online all day? Is this how you normally make nuanced judgements in life?!

bakermummy21 · 27/10/2023 17:51

Who would be responsible if a customer tripped over the lead or got bitten? The cafe for allowing them or the dog owner?

user1471538283 · 27/10/2023 17:52

I hate it too and I love dogs. We go to a dog friendly restaurant however, the dogs and owners are in one bit and the proper dining area is in another bit.

If dogs are in a dining area they have to be well trained.

When I've been with people with dogs and when we had dogs we sat outside and the dogs were not allowed to beg or disturb others.

Personally, I feel it should be both.

I asked this question on a thread once and the answer I was given was that it would be the owner. Don’t know if that’s correct though.
