Dog annoying us in restaurant

Onthegreeen · 27/10/2023 14:17

I was in a restaurant with a friend this morning. A dog at the next table kept wandering over around our table, putting his head onto our laps, swishing his tail against us etc.
We asked the owner if she could keep him at her own table at which point she said it was a dog friendly cafe and he was entitled to be there.
So were we, but we weren't entitled to wander around other tables annoying people. Children are welcome in the cafe but they're not entitled to go up and sit on some random customer's lap.

We couldn't be bothered getting into an argument so we just left. But AIBU to think she was bloody rude and self entitled.

Do you think you might have misplaced rage @PTSDBarbiegirl ? You are painting quite an extreme, and unpleasant picture of what is a dog just being a dog.

Don't think my comment calls for passive aggressive personal accusation. Thanks for your feedback, I love dogs being dogs but not in a fucking restaurant. Nah that can bugger off.

And so it begins . . . 😕

I take it you are unfamiliar with how revolting it may be for me to be enjoying a meal when in walk dog family who think slabber, hair and unwanted smells are acceptable in this setting. I mean FFS are you paying for my meal?! And I'm a dog lover.

Redebs · 27/10/2023 20:38

bakermummy21 · 27/10/2023 17:51

Who would be responsible if a customer tripped over the lead or got bitten? The cafe for allowing them or the dog owner?

No one, because by going to a dog-friendly cafe or public beach you should expect to come across 'fur babies'(🤮) and so it's your own fault, apparently

Isn't there a variation of the same post EVERY week? YABU it's the most boring subject.

To be fair though, when the sport is on TV, our local pub is full of slobbering, hairy, smell makers and they don't even let dogs in.

Boomboom22 · 27/10/2023 20:43

If a dog actually put it's face on my lap I would scream the place down. How could that ever ever be acceptable? It's assault right next to your private parts by a terrifying creature with essentially fangs, not to mention the extra long tongue that might touch your clothes. And dog hair might contaminate you and get in your house, truly rank. Review online in as many places as you can and maybe report to the dog warden so they can have a word with the cafe owner about appropriate behaviour.

Entitled, thick as shit dog owners.

It’s almost like it’s a vicious circle.

Riola · 27/10/2023 20:45

sollenwir · 27/10/2023 16:42

@Riola I predicted that wouldn't last long - dogs definitely do not need to be in a shopping centre like Silverburn, unless they are official assistance dogs.

Exactly, it was an obvious recipe for disaster! I’m glad the people of Pollok spoke up and didn’t tolerate that nonsense in their shopping centre!

Why would I avoid? Not everyone hates dogs, but thanks for the suggestion.

I adore my kids. Not everyone else’s. I love my useless dog. Not every single dogs. I have become a grumpy old fart that misses the old days when people didn’t anthropomorphise their little doggy darlings and drag them bloody everywhere.
BTW, I work in a theatre and had a full-blown argument with a patron who smuggled a dog into an opera in her bloody handbag. The lady next to her mentioned this because a) She was wearing expensive velvet and b) the dog was (rightly) distressed and the idiot woman kept bringing it and sweet talking her little “Foo Foo”. 🤢

I'm not miserable and I don't hate dogs, but I don't want to be 'loved up' by other people's dogs.

KimberleyClark · 28/10/2023 09:00

I live neat a large park with woodland which is extremely popular with dog walkers. There is a dog friendly coffee shop just outside and it’s always busy. . If they weren’t dog friendly they’d have a fraction of the business they have now.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 28/10/2023 09:11

@SeaPool that made me laugh😂

@Boomboom22 are you Ok?

SeaPool · 28/10/2023 11:55

At some stage on these threads there's always someone who accuses dog owners of anthropomorphizing their dogs. Anyone who knows dogs well wouldn't insult them by accusing them of having human characteristics and standards.

lizzy8230 · 28/10/2023 12:20

Hairy slobbering humans and dogs are equally revolting. Very often they seem to be attracted to each other so it's a double whammy of 🤮

SeaPool · 28/10/2023 12:29

The slobber thing also always comes up. I've had several dogs over a period of 50 years and not one of them has ever slobbered, honestly, not once.

I guess if you just don't like dogs you don't like dogs. Poor old dogs, most of them are so lovely.

oakleaffy · 28/10/2023 12:40

Depends on the flews as to how slobbery dogs are.

Some breeds are horribly slobbery and drooling.

lizzy8230 · 28/10/2023 12:48

Nothing to do with not liking dogs. I have a dog. I don't want anyone else's dog coming up to me and sticking it's face in my crotch, slobbering on me, jumping up at me etc.
I guess using the 'dog hater' line is a useful way of excusing the fact that some owners are twats.

You obviously haven't read my previous post.

It the immediate resort of both of you to aggressive language that I was commenting on.

But you do you.

listsandbudgets · 28/10/2023 12:53

I'm sorry this happened to you OP.

My dog loves going to cafes and the pub but no way is she allowed to wander over to random people and harass them UNLESS they call her over or approach her to talk to her - and some do especially children who want to pet her.

However quite reasonably the vast majority of people do not want to interact with my dog while they're eating their lunch though she was extremely happy to meat a lady who insisted on feeding her half a sausage a couple of weeks ago!!

listsandbudgets · 28/10/2023 12:54

^^ meet I mean though perhaps meat is closer to the mark!!

Do you really think it’s acceptable in a restaurant for a dog to wander up to another customer and put its head on their lap whilst they are eating. Because it is ‘loving up’. Do you have any concept of personal space and boundaries?

Thankfully there are many non-selfish owners who agree with the OP.
