Dog annoying us in restaurant

Onthegreeen · 27/10/2023 14:17

I was in a restaurant with a friend this morning. A dog at the next table kept wandering over around our table, putting his head onto our laps, swishing his tail against us etc.
We asked the owner if she could keep him at her own table at which point she said it was a dog friendly cafe and he was entitled to be there.
So were we, but we weren't entitled to wander around other tables annoying people. Children are welcome in the cafe but they're not entitled to go up and sit on some random customer's lap.

We couldn't be bothered getting into an argument so we just left. But AIBU to think she was bloody rude and self entitled.

Agreed, and have made the same point already.
It's a stupid comparison.

It’s the whole ‘fur baby’ thing now though isn’t it. Dogs are almost being given equal status to children by some 🤦‍♀️

@sollenwir I am not comparing dogs to children. Just saying this is how they would be with their kids as well.

Fair enough, although this thread isn't about children so it doesn't even need to be mentioned. Other people ARE comparing dogs and children though.

I'm a dog owner and hate dogs being allowed in restaurants.

The tide is turning though. I'm seeing more and more previously dog friendly places now refusing dogs or restricting them to outside only. They've realised more people don't want it and so are losing trade.

The twattish inconsiderate owners only have themselves to blame.

There was a shopping centre in Scotland that ran a dog friendly trial. They had so many complaints , because so often there was urine and poop not cleaned up well or not even cleaned at all. I think the finals straw was when a customer spotted dog faeces in the food court and they finally brought the trial to an end.

It was all so predictable, when the trial was first announced a lot of people including dog owners had commented on their Facebook page to say it was a bad idea. However they just ploughed ahead anyway thinking it will increase customers /profits .

I take my dogs into dog friendly places all the time.

I don't let them make a nuisance of themselves.

I would have got into an argument. (But that's me). Or complained to the staff. They may be dog friendly but they won't want customers who are dog free being put off.

Also, a dog like that could easily start a fight with another dog (even if the other is under control) and the last thing anyone wants it two dogs ripping collops out of each other and knocking over tables.

SadnessIs · 27/10/2023 16:40

It’s also causing a culture of dogs fitting in with their owners lives - rather than someone getting a dog and taking care of it properly some will just take the dog with them shopping or to eat whereas before ‘dog friendly ‘ was so widespread dogs probably got taken out on more walks and activities for their benefit not just tagging along

Dogs in restaurant, pubs, shops everywhere you go. 🤯 I've got dogs don't go anywhere only walks to the park, up the hills.

Love a dog post

sollenwir · 27/10/2023 16:42

@Riola I predicted that wouldn't last long - dogs definitely do not need to be in a shopping centre like Silverburn, unless they are official assistance dogs.

Liamgallaghersparka · 27/10/2023 16:43

It's people like this that give dog owners a bad name. Yes, it may be a dog friendly cafe, that means your dog can go in, it doesn't entitle you to let your dog roam around as if it were at home.
We were recently in a dog friendly cafe and the dog with the couple at the next table came over and jumped up at my husband, the gentleman with the dog could not apologise enough.
This woman sounds very entitled. Of course you should be able to enjoy your meal / coffee in peace.
I bet if you'd had kids with you and they were running riot she'd have been the first to complain.

LindyLou2020 · 27/10/2023 16:45

I don't have a dog. I find myself quite liking individual dogs, but cats suit my way of life better.
So I neither adore nor despise dogs, and I hugely admire the work done by assistance dogs, and appreciate how dogs in general can give people so much pleasure and loyalty.
AFIK public places have to admit assistance dogs, but can make their own decisions about non-working dogs.
I too have noticed more and more cafes, pubs, etc, allowing non-assistance dogs on their premises, both outside and in.
I think what's happened is that we know that many people acquired pets during lockdowns, especially dogs.
So the dog population seems to have increased enormously.
As restrictions eased, people were able to visit said pubs, cafes, etc, again, and it appears that they wanted to take their dogs with them.
And if, say, one cafe in a street accepts dogs, others feel they have to do the same, otherwise they will lose out on business.
I personally don't like sharing my eating space with dogs, and will choose not to, but dog owners and others will disagree.

There's always one 🙄 Get a grip! Nowt to do with hating dogs, I love dogs but I don't want one all over me when I'm trying to eat in a restaurant, you sound as entitled as the woman who didn't give a 💩 where her dog was instead of keeping it under control.

Nonplusultra · 27/10/2023 16:50

I’d really appreciate clear signage or some sort of symbol to indicate dog friendly establishments so I can avoid them.

I think it’s a great service for those who want it, but I’d like to be able to opt out.

Ididivfama · 27/10/2023 16:54

@Ylvamoon with good reason.

Hardyards · 27/10/2023 16:55

Im going to upset everyone here - I don’t want dogs or babies clambering over me. I go out to get away from mine and snd I’m non joking!

More shocking news at ten.

Cheesecakefiend · 27/10/2023 16:57

I have a dog but she enjoys running in the woods and I enjoy walking with her. She does not want to be in a busy noisy cafe and I don't want to have to take her everywhere I go. Why are dog owners unable to leave their pets at home these days ?

And children aren’t to allowed to climb and sniff around other people. Even though they’re, you know, human.

TripleDaisySummer · 27/10/2023 16:58

I don’t have kids but I’d much rather a toddler wandering up to me than a dog which can easily bite or scratch me, or give me reason to fear it will. Yes some toddlers can do the same, but I wouldn’t find that half as scary 😂

so yeah it’s not the same at all. I never get this comparison. aside from the fact that children are humans, that we all once were - They are not dogs /pets 🥹

It's clearly the same self entitled attitude of other's don't matter and everyone must accommodate my child/dog/whatever else that shows no consideration for others.

As for toddler wandering up being fine it bloody depends on context clearly- not so good when you have devastated friend bearably holding it together after some awful news and then finding some random stranger expects you to entertain their toddler.

Even when I had very young kids I find it a huge annoyance - I remember clearly one day my three were pain in a week I was by myself - took them out and entire day they were quiet 40 minutes they ate out unfortunately I was consonantly pestered by a child with five adults all ignoring her till second time I took her back - only peace that day destroyed as apparently strangers thought I was a childminder and should therefore mind their child for free. Same with swimming lessons stressful and I'd take time with one not swimming only to find man I didn't know expecting me to mind his bloody daughter.

It's same self entitle bloody ignorant attitude of I'm all right jack fuck everyone else they'll just have to accommodate me. That's not to say there aren't random cute dog /toddler moments to spontaneously enjoy and making people happy - just a time and a place for them and some consideration for others goes a long way.

I really agree with this. Non-lapdog dogs are now treated as lapdogs - extensions of their owners - and it's definitely not to the dogs' benefit.

"Dogs are happy as long as they're near you" is doing a lot of heavy lifting these days. Owners are massively letting themselves off the hook.

That’s a reasonable stance to be fair lol doubt you’ll get much pushback on that.

topnoddy · 27/10/2023 17:04

My reply to the dog owner would have been "the venue may be dog friendly bit I ain't , get your mutt away from my table and me "

Atethehalloweenchocs · 27/10/2023 17:04

I take my dogs in cafes. I would never allow them to do this. To be honest, it is usually the opposite problem for me - my food goes cold while I am supervising them visiting with the people who call them over.

Fartooold · 27/10/2023 17:05

I have two labradors, I adore them and have had dogs for 40 odd years, but I bloody HATE the 'we must take our dogs everywhere' attitude that seems to abound today.

I don't want them in shops, restaurants or shopping centres, unless they are there to work.

What's wrong with just taking your dogs for a good walk in the woods/on the beach/ I the park - you know, somewhere THEY would actually enjoy.....

I'm getting grumpy in my old age 🤨
