Dog annoying us in restaurant

Onthegreeen · 27/10/2023 14:17

I was in a restaurant with a friend this morning. A dog at the next table kept wandering over around our table, putting his head onto our laps, swishing his tail against us etc.
We asked the owner if she could keep him at her own table at which point she said it was a dog friendly cafe and he was entitled to be there.
So were we, but we weren't entitled to wander around other tables annoying people. Children are welcome in the cafe but they're not entitled to go up and sit on some random customer's lap.

We couldn't be bothered getting into an argument so we just left. But AIBU to think she was bloody rude and self entitled.

Dog friendly doesn't mean that dogs should impact other people. Dog friendly means well behaved dogs who sit under the table and don't impede on other people are welcome. And yes I am a dog owner.

I once sat outside at a cafe with my dog and he started barking at another dog. My dog was the one behaving like a twat, so rather than just saying 'oh it's ok because he's allowed to be here' I left and took my barking dog with me so that his noise didn't ruin the experience of the other customers. It's basic manners.

👍 Well done.
We were in a dog friendly café and a schnauzer ( after we’d ordered) came in and began yapping so shrilly at it’s owner it was unbearable.

The schnauzer was begging for cake.
yap! Yap! Scream! - owner fed it cake-
rinse and repeat.
Had we not ordered, we’d have left with our quiet dogs.
It was so shrill it hurt the ears.

She was basically reinforcing the yapping by rewarding the behaviour with 🍰 cake.

That woman with the schnauzer sounds proper dense

A Dane is a LOT of dog.
They really do need very responsible owners.
The turning circle of a Dane is about two metres- plus the tail that has potential to clear tables.
Soft mouth- That’s lovely re releasing rabbit
we had a Lurcher and Whippet that both caught the same squirrel ( a juvenile) and both released it unharmed - the squirrel I put up a tree- but he ran down and was caught again- and released unharmed … Darwin Award 🥇 came to mind.

I put the little one higher up a tree and he scampered off , higher to safety scolding like mad.
A neighbour’s huge Maine Coon cat caught a large goldfish from our pond- Neighbour retrieved fish ( bitten and scratched) but a friend who kept fish told me to buy fish meds and to keep him in a tank til he was better-

He survived, but was eventually caught again.

At a charity dog show I saw a really matted dog-
never seen the like before.

The owner said the mats are a breed standard-

A Bergomasco .

That IS a breed you’d get complaints about in a café!
Big, hairy, smelly… probably drooly, too.

Another large, hairy VERY smelly breed is an otterhound. Lady I met on dog walks had three of them! (They were gorgeous)

Badly behaved dogs = annoying
Badly behaved kids = annoying
Badly behaved youths = annoying
Badly behaved adults = annoying.
I bit more consideration for everyone wouldn't go amiss.
I don't want to hear ridiculously loud guffaws when I'm having a coffee
I don't want to hear anyone's music when I'm having a coffee
I don't want to hear screeching from children, when I'm having a coffee
I don't want to hear a yapping dog, or be introduced to a dog when I'm having my coffee.
Maybe I need to find an uninhabited island 😂

I would come with you, but I come accessorised with three spaniels.

Dogs shouldn’t be in cafes and pubs and restaurants.

END OF.

Just leave them at home, FFS

I'll leave my dogs home when other people leave their kids.

Yanbu. I dint like dogs so now avoid anywhere that allows dogs. I don't want dogs approaching me, I don't want them barking and making me jump. I don't want to see them sitting on chairs, or at the table. I don't want to see the. Locking plates, or staff stroking them and then touching food. I don't want dog hairs un my drink. Yes, it happened. Leave your dogs at home/in the car/outside. They do not need to be treated like a human.

And no, I don't care if others think I'm unreasonable.

Well said! I agree totally.

kids are humans
dogs are animals

humans trump animals

so that ain’t gonna happen

I don't like the culture of dog-friendliness everywhere.

I've been hassled by dogs begging at a cafe for food but they were the owners' dogs, so what can you do, other than not go there again.

It does seem to me that people are incredibly inclusive, until it comes to dogs. Then stuff those who don't like them, are scared of them, or are allergic to them. It's tough.

I was in the "new" shopping centre at Battersea power station on Friday. There were dogs in there as well. I meant, really? Dogs do not need, and probably don't even want, to go shopping.

Dogs will definitely not want to go shopping! It's ridiculous this taking my dogs everywhere! I feel sorry for dogs who have to endure this & would go as far to say people who do this should not be allowed to own a dog.

mn29 · 29/10/2023 13:45

Yanbu at all - dog-friendly means dogs are allowed in, not that they can enter the personal space of other customers. I was on a train once and the dog (not an assistance dog) of the woman opposite kept brushing up around me. She was unreasonably huffy and argumentative when I politely asked if she would stop her dog moving up against me and wagging its tail against my legs. She’s entitled to have her dog on the train, but I’m equally entitled to not be touched by her dog.

What excitable nonsense.

Do you actually have a dog or know much about dogs at all?

Flinstones · 29/10/2023 15:52

SEAPOOL I take it you do this with your dog! Which is why it has to be nonsense otherwise you'll have to admit being cruel to your dog by taking it to such places!
I've just been out now for a walk stopped at a cafe for a drink & a lady got bitten on her finger as she walked past a dog!!! She didn't try & stroke it just walked past & it not her. Owner said nothing, cafe was really busy & I fully believe the dog did it because it was stressed being in such an environment! I bet it would of been much happier at home in the quiet.

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 15:55

@Flinstones You already know that my dog died in August.

Do you have a dog or know anything about dogs at all. You seem to have an awful lot of very strong opinions about the care and welfare of dogs and none of it seems to come from a position of actually knowing anything about dogs.

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 15:56

It is nonsense to say that if a person takes their dog to a shop they shouldn't have dogs. Total nonsense.

And there’s a poster upthread who said something similar happened to her grandad walking past a dog. I’m telling you if this ever happened to me everyone is getting sued and the police are getting called.

What did the woman say? Hope she at least leaves a terrible review of the cafe/owner.

I agree dogs are becoming a pest . I went out for a walk in the park today which I usually avoid due to out of control dogs. After about 5 minutes I saw a man with two off lead dogs ahead of me and it leapt onto a passer-by who looked annoyed but didn’t say anything. It made me anxious walking past so I just turned around and left the park. It’s not the dogs fault of course but the selfish owners. Yes dogs have always been in parks but I feel they were better trained in the 90s because I didn’t get dogs jumping on me all the time.

We need more dog free spaces IMO.

I don't remember at all actually. I'd have to have gone back & I didn't I just answered the post.
Whether I have a dog or not is not the question, I have eyes & can see what's happening around me! I do have very strong opinions on this matter as it doesn't matter whether I have a dog or not but I'm sick to death of other people's dogs being absolutely EVERYWHERE because the dog owners can't leave them at home.
Dogs are an absolute pest when I'm out & about. It seems many on here think this also & I hope & pray as time goes on the trend to take your dog everywhere becomes a thing of the past.

chattyness · 29/10/2023 16:02

I wouldn't mind a dog coming over as long as it wasn't aggressive, actually I'd quite enjoy it but I wouldn't want it swishing it's tail in our food and drinks just the same. We have a dog but we don't go out to pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, or cafes with him .We buy take away food and find a picnic area or eat in the car with our dog if it's cold or raining. I'd rather have the company of our dog than strangers.

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 16:15

@Flinstones It's one thing having strong opinions on dogs being in public places, but to have dictate who can and can't have dogs and how they should care for them from a position of complete ignorance is a bit rich.

Here's my dog not at all stressed out or a pest in our local pub. Just a cosy part of country life after a nice walk in the fresh air.

Flinstones · 29/10/2023 16:23

But your doing the same to me! Dictating with your strong opinion that you can read dogs minds, Because you've decided that your dog enjoyed being out, you & all like you take them because YOU think this is a pleasant scene to be greeted with, i however would groan if I walked in & saw this, I don't want to walk over or around peoples dogs & don't think it's nice to see them out, I just think oh no more dogs!

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 16:30

@Flinstones I've never been able to read dogs minds, but if you know dogs you can clearly observe by their behaviour when one is happy/anxious/tired and when one is not. You clearly don't know dogs at all so I will never convince you of that and nor should I try.

I'm sorry you don't like dogs and don't like to see them out. They have every right to be out though and always have. You are missing out on a joy in life, but hey, different strokes.

Please don't feel sorry for me. I have many joys in my life & don't need a dog to experience this. I just wish I didn't have to be around everyone else's dog. You unfortunately having been a dog owner just can't understand someone who doesn't want dogs everywhere. I can't understand why people bring them everywhere. My opinion doesn't effect you or anyone else but your opinion & many others like you massively effects me & others who think like I do.

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 16:41

@Flinstones Dogs are and always have been a part of real world just like people are. We just have to all get on and share kindly and with tolerance. Having your dog under control is an essential part of that bargain.

Edited

Yes we agree on the keeping the dog under control would be a huge step in tolerating the many dogs around. I agree dogs have been around forever but to the extent they are now & the numerous places they are allowed in has escalated massively. I'm not a young person at all & remember when I could go out to the shops, cafes, restaurants & dogs not allowed in, things have changed & trust me when you are scared of dogs & don't want them around they are everywhere & this was not always the case at all. People do not keep them under control & that's the biggest problem they assume everyone loves their dog & lets them do as they please. Kindness & tolerance is the way forward I also agree but a lot of dog owners would need to change for that to happen.
