Dog annoying us in restaurant

Onthegreeen · 27/10/2023 14:17

I was in a restaurant with a friend this morning. A dog at the next table kept wandering over around our table, putting his head onto our laps, swishing his tail against us etc.
We asked the owner if she could keep him at her own table at which point she said it was a dog friendly cafe and he was entitled to be there.
So were we, but we weren't entitled to wander around other tables annoying people. Children are welcome in the cafe but they're not entitled to go up and sit on some random customer's lap.

We couldn't be bothered getting into an argument so we just left. But AIBU to think she was bloody rude and self entitled.

@tabulaisrasa not weird just selfish and entitled.

Hibiscrubbed · 29/10/2023 07:10

You’re not unreasonable, OP. But I also know we couldn’t be friends you and I, because I’d be delighted to be visited by a dog in a cafe.

🙈 Oh no!
I know a Dane owner and they are very dedicated- Always well train their Dane - and are responsible and respectful of others with them-
I had a Whippet years ago whom as a puppy in my arms had a horse gently breathe on him- He let loose a fishy aroma - Anal glands!

In the Nurses room at vets it can have that very penetrating aroma - We had misfortune to follow a very anxious Dog for a weigh in before spaying.

Maybe it was the owner faced with the bill?

Maybe it was the owner faced with the bill?

😂 LOL!

Re: the training - DD's was very well trained. She was well aware that a dog that is is a huge (no pun intended) responsibility. It doesn't need to be aggressive to cause problems - a dane stepping on (say) a shih tzu could cripple or even kill it. A dane shoving or leaning against someone could knock them over.

We only once had a problem with him. My DD also had a staffie bitch that the dane regarded as his "mammy".

She was attacked by a large Labrador when we were on a family walk (5 adults, 7 dogs). For some reason it just homed straight in on her. The dane just flew at him - didn't bite him but sent him flying and kept him pinned on his back, snarling at him. It took DD and Mr Viper to drag him off. He came back quiet as a lamb when he saw his "mam" was ok (we'd put all the others back on leash) and didn't so much as look back.

Labrador owner very pee'd and very abusive - but his dog started it.

Apart from that one incident he was as gentle as a kitten with other dogs, large and small, cats, and even small mammals eg rabbits, hamsters. He caught a baby rabbit once and carried him back to my DD, proud as punch. Poor little thing was unharmed but covered in spit. They let it go in the brambles - I'd like to think it dined out on that story for years.

He did accidentally swallow a goldfish when he was drinking out of our little pond - the shock on his face. It was too late to get the poor thing back though.

Well if it's so boring why open the thread to announce how boring you find it?
Hardly makes you sound like the most scintillating, interesting and original person on the forum.
In fact it makes you sound..... well.... boring!

I agree - I wish people would just scroll past threads/ posts that they consider boring or offensive, or just state that they disagree and then disappear.

Yanbu. I dint like dogs so now avoid anywhere that allows dogs. I don't want dogs approaching me, I don't want them barking and making me jump. I don't want to see them sitting on chairs, or at the table. I don't want to see the. Locking plates, or staff stroking them and then touching food. I don't want dog hairs un my drink. Yes, it happened. Leave your dogs at home/in the car/outside. They do not need to be treated like a human.

And no, I don't care if others think I'm unreasonable.

It’s outrageous.

I took my v elderly mum and dad to a pub for lunch. The dog on the table behind was being a nuisance to them and I asked the owners to keep it by them. They were eye-rolley and teeth gritted but made a half hearted attempt to get the dog to sit under their table. Then m&d’s food arrived, the dog sprang up, pushed inbetween M&D, grabbed my dad’s food and as the dog made him jump he spilled his drink all over his clothes.

They laughed. The pub replaced the food , the family declined to pay for the drink (“it was an accident “), m& d were really upset.

I am so sick of selfish obnoxious dog owners.

My elderly dad got bitten by a dog in a cafe as he walked past their table.
'He's harmless mate' didn't really cut it when an eighty year old man is bleeding.

Elly46 · 29/10/2023 08:32

We were at a friends holiday chalet recently and entered the residents restaurant for dinner (myself, DH and ds6 who is autistic). It’s the first time we’ve been to this restaurant since it’s been renovated and DS was a little reluctant to enter as he is the first time anywhere new. We’d just taken a couple
of steps through the door when a black spaniel/poodle type dog whose family was situated at a table near the entrance came bounding over to us barking and yapping loudly, not
on a lead. My son shrunk in to me briefly before walking with us to the waiting area. Dog owner laughed and called her dog back animatedly. I think she may have offered a jovial apology but we were to rattled to really notice. I shielded my son, ignored the owner and carried on being seated. Not a massive deal but it could have been worse if my son had not been able to tolerate it along with the new environment. I don’t mind dogs but I don’t want them forced upon me.

frami · 29/10/2023 08:37

I have a dog. She is trained to lie down under the table in cafes, pubs etc and not to bark. For extra reassurance we tie her lead to a chair or the table. I hate it when other owners allow their dogs to annoy others, both dogs and humans. Train your dog it's not that difficult.

YANBU. I'm finding all these "dog friendly" places really off putting these days. If I've a choice, I'll give a dog friendly cafe a miss and go somewhere else instead.

This. If a cafe ,hotel or restaurant advertises itself as dog friendly we give it a wide berth now. Particularly in the evening. I get that people may have been on a walk with their dog and call in somewhere for a bit of lunch. But why the hell can't you leave your dog at home when you go out for meal somewhere nice in the evening. I am not interested in your dog and I absolutely do not want to see staff making a fuss of it and then picking up someone else's plates with drool covered hands.

queenMab99 · 29/10/2023 08:52

Even thinking about taking my dog to a cafe, gives me a panic attack! I took him once to an actual dog cafe in our village, when he was a pup, we sat outside, but he would not settle at all. I know I should have persevered in training him in cafe manners, but it is easier to just not take him, I take a flask and a picnic on my outings with him, he is well behaved in most other ways, he never bothers other dogs or people on walks.

I like a stress free life.........

Princespea · 29/10/2023 09:09

How can anyone say the op I'd being unreasonable is beyond me. Who wants someone's dog on your lap whilst trying to eat? Potentially getting hair on you food. I try and avoid dog friendly places. I was once in a pub having a nice quiet meal, until someone came in with their dog and it kept Barking and running around everywhere. I also have 2 dogs and don't think cafes and restaurants are places for dogs anyway

Experiences such as your dad's and @BrimfulOfMash 's are what gives dogs and their owners a bad name.

Disgraceful behaviour by owners, both for allowing these thing to happen, and for not taking responsibility when they did.

TBH re: Brimfull's drink situation, I would have grabbed a bowl of dog water and thrown it over them.

And I hope you reported the bite to the police. Elderly people have very thin skin, and also take a long time to heal from injuries that a 20 year old would recover from in next to no time (not that a dog that bites is ever acceptable).

So you see no issue with this? Just because you love your dog and its behaviours does not mean everyone else does. I am a dog owner but my dog is very reactive and I would never inflict that on other people who are paying hard earned money for a nice experience which I know my dog would spoil for them.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 29/10/2023 09:58

Badly behaved dogs = annoying
Badly behaved kids = annoying
Badly behaved youths = annoying
Badly behaved adults = annoying.
I bit more consideration for everyone wouldn't go amiss.
I don't want to hear ridiculously loud guffaws when I'm having a coffee
I don't want to hear anyone's music when I'm having a coffee
I don't want to hear screeching from children, when I'm having a coffee
I don't want to hear a yapping dog, or be introduced to a dog when I'm having my coffee.
Maybe I need to find an uninhabited island 😂

Absolutely all of this!

I have a dog but have noticed the dog owning thing has gone weird. In a park yesterday in a good area, only 50% were picking up poo. I expect the same people will allow their kids to have blaring devices in restaurants or on planes, and expect special treatment at work. What has happened to us? Where is our sense of community?

You don't have to be a dog hater to not want someone else's dog to keep coming up and laying on you! You wouldn't expect their children to do it so why should a dog!

SeaPool · 29/10/2023 10:41

@Flinstones It really is for the human not the dog that they take them. They would be much happier at home. The being with a pack is surely more dogs & not humans.

We are going to have to disagree on this.

Casperroonie · 29/10/2023 10:43

Take a bit of scrap food, tempt the dog and chuck it. The dog would either go after it and chill for a bit or the scrap could be left chucked. The staff would definitely respond then and perhaps even the owner. Offer raisins (but don't give), that should promt them into action!!!

Imisssleep2 · 29/10/2023 10:47

Yanbu, dog friendly does not mean they can wander wherever they like, I would still expect a dog in a dog friendly cafe to be well behaved, not yapping the whole time, and to be confined to the owners table area, just like this is how I expect children to behave in a cafe/restaurant too, and yes I have my own children and they sit at the table when we are out.

Absolutely agree, there's been a shift in the sense of entitlement of people who think that they don't need to be considerate of other people, as you say the same people will let their dogs dog anything, let their kids do anything and they themselves also not think of their behaviour impacting others.

Dog friendly doesn't mean that dogs should impact other people. Dog friendly means well behaved dogs who sit under the table and don't impede on other people are welcome. And yes I am a dog owner.

I once sat outside at a cafe with my dog and he started barking at another dog. My dog was the one behaving like a twat, so rather than just saying 'oh it's ok because he's allowed to be here' I left and took my barking dog with me so that his noise didn't ruin the experience of the other customers. It's basic manners.

A Dane is a LOT of dog.
They really do need very responsible owners.
The turning circle of a Dane is about two metres- plus the tail that has potential to clear tables.
Soft mouth- That’s lovely re releasing rabbit
we had a Lurcher and Whippet that both caught the same squirrel ( a juvenile) and both released it unharmed - the squirrel I put up a tree- but he ran down and was caught again- and released unharmed … Darwin Award 🥇 came to mind.

I put the little one higher up a tree and he scampered off , higher to safety scolding like mad.
A neighbour’s huge Maine Coon cat caught a large goldfish from our pond- Neighbour retrieved fish ( bitten and scratched) but a friend who kept fish told me to buy fish meds and to keep him in a tank til he was better-

He survived, but was eventually caught again.

At a charity dog show I saw a really matted dog-
never seen the like before.

The owner said the mats are a breed standard-

A Bergomasco .

That IS a breed you’d get complaints about in a café!
Big, hairy, smelly… probably drooly, too.

LuckySantangelo35 · 29/10/2023 11:06

Dogs shouldn’t be in cafes and pubs and restaurants.

END OF.

Just leave them at home, FFS
