To ask if this money is mine?

Through work, I attend a meeting. Some new engineers attended one meeting that I attended in my own time and not work time and asked if I would test a new product, which I did in my own time for over a month. I then attended another meeting in work time to talk about the product. The product would benenfit the cohort I work with in my day to day work. I was compensated for testing, which was an added bonus and have received money (just over £100). As this is a meeting I attend through work, should the money have gone to work rather than me?

It is your money

AnaisMae · 27/10/2023 08:41

You worked, you were paid. Its your money.

cultureplanet · 27/10/2023 08:43

Does your contract cover this eventuality? Is this uncommon? First time it’s ever happened? Any other colleague had this situation? Is your employer aware?

CatherinedeBourgh · 27/10/2023 08:47

There is no simple answer. There may be something in your contract about doing other work (or not being allowed to). There may also be issues around conflict of interest.

The money is not big enough for it to be an issue in itself, but there are matters of principle involved.

Donna1001 · 27/10/2023 08:48

Are you sure your company allows payment for this kind of thing?

At my place of work this would be very dimly viewed. We have regular training to make sure we understand that accepting anything like this is not allowed. It even includes not being taken out for a meal by a company under contract negotiations. So being paid to test a product you might buy would definitely not be permitted.

The testing would also have been done during work hours, even if out of hours I would expect to be paid overtime.

Donna1001 · 27/10/2023 08:50

Just to add, if we do accept anything we have to register anything over the value of £25.

I do work for a large bank though, where I appreciate rules are very tight.

AlltheFs · 27/10/2023 08:50

In our sector it would be yours but you would have to declare it (we keep a register), as we have to have transparency and be sure there is no bribery or corruption etc

But it depends entirely on your contract and whether they asked you to do it or not.

KimberleyClark · 27/10/2023 08:51

Is there a gifts and hospitality register at your work? If so you may wish to register it just to cover yourself.

Donotshushme · 27/10/2023 08:51

At my workplace this would flag up under our bribery policy.

cultureplanet · 27/10/2023 09:09

Not a chance in hell I would take this
money without referring to my employer

I was going to say I read this OP recently!

nettie434 · 27/10/2023 09:21

It's not something you did entirely in your own time so it would be better to check if there is a policy covering these situations. It might be fine. It might be that you just need to record that you got a payment but at the moment it's not clear whether you gave the other company feedback as an individual or as an employee of your company.

SpeedbirdSquawker · 27/10/2023 15:36

Ah, I forgot I had made that previous post. I am odd @cultureplanet though, you're right. I don't mind being odd though. There are worse things to be!

I've told my employer now as I wanted to be completely transparent. It's a weight of my mind as I'm a worrier.

But op this exact same scenario you posted two months ago.

Are you saying that you’ve been sitting on the money for that time?

and you were given very similar advice…. On that thread!

SpeedbirdSquawker · 21/08/2023 21:18

Hi @GoodChat Yes they took my bank details but now panicking that it should perhaps be going to the organisation I work for.

well you can’t have been “worrying” or “panicking” that much! 😂

So you waited 2 months and told them today?

Whataretheodds · 27/10/2023 15:45

At my workplace we would need to declare the offer, regardless of whether we intended to decline or accept

SpeedbirdSquawker · 27/10/2023 16:00

I was only paid the money yesterday which is why I forgot about it.

OP posts:
cultureplanet · 27/10/2023 16:01

Well given you have sat on the issue for 2 months…. I’d pick up the phone to your employer pronto

SpeedbirdSquawker · 27/10/2023 16:01

I was also only told I was going to be paid for it towards the end too.

OP posts:
SpeedbirdSquawker · 27/10/2023 16:02

@cultureplanet I've spoken to my employer already.
