To ask if this money is mine?

Through work, I attend a meeting. Some new engineers attended one meeting that I attended in my own time and not work time and asked if I would test a new product, which I did in my own time for over a month. I then attended another meeting in work time to talk about the product. The product would benenfit the cohort I work with in my day to day work. I was compensated for testing, which was an added bonus and have received money (just over £100). As this is a meeting I attend through work, should the money have gone to work rather than me?

Ok so you told the employer.

and what was the response?

cultureplanet · 27/10/2023 16:04

I would have thought that was quite a relevant detail in your update!

SpeedbirdSquawker · 27/10/2023 16:08

I forget things very easily. Especially when life is busy. I forgot to tell my employer and ask if it would be OK to keep the money. I'm usually on the ball with stuff like this but life has been hectic including a possible adhd and autism diagnosis. Also i think im going through the peri menopause. Is this why I forget things? I don't know but hopefully my employer won't think badly of me.

What did your employer say when you told them??

VanGoghsDog · 27/10/2023 20:11

I've had similar things associated with work before. I always ask the providers to donate it to charity as I don't like the idea I am being paid twice.

Just to add, if we do accept anything we have to register anything over the value of £25.

I do work for a large bank though, where I appreciate rules are very tight.

I'm not in a bank and also have to declare
I think it's something to do with HMRC
A colleague at work arranges some work events and in doing so has had rewards like free hotel nights and I know she reports that

I also think my work would have expected you to declare the trail as it happened especially as you had to follow up in work time
I'm sure they would be fine but there is possibly a chance of conflict of interests

cultureplanet · 28/10/2023 08:39

It is so odd that the Op spoke to her employer
came back to the thread to update that she’d spoken to her employer
but doesn’t give the slightest indication as to what the employer’s response was!!

cultureplanet · 28/10/2023 08:40

Aside from hoping that her employer doesn’t think badly of her!

SpeedbirdSquawker · 28/10/2023 20:19

@cultureplanet I don't think it's odd.

Well no OP

Then again, you start a thread about this exact issue two months. Supposedly seriously panicking and worrying. And then completely forget about the issue. And suddenly remember on the day you get paid. And start another thread nearly word for word the same as your previous one. Asking what to do. Then update to say you have done as advised but don’t actually say what the employer actually said

I suspect because - you feel rather embarrassed!

all in all, odd from start to finish 😂

cultureplanet · 28/10/2023 21:44

So I shouldn’t really be surprised!

SpeedbirdSquawker · 29/10/2023 01:53

@cultureplanet you're far too invested in it all. Not sure I'm the odd one.

what can I say… sometimes a poster intrigues one 😂

Bearbookagainandagain · 29/10/2023 05:45

As others have said, in my experience if the product can benefit the organisation in any way then employees shouldn't be paid in that scenario (but your employer shouldn't either!). It would be against anti-bribery policies.

If the product has no connection at all with work then I guess it's up to the employer. But generally we would not accept any payment from customers/agencies we work for outside of agreed contracts.

Hehehe don't worry I forget I've done stuff like this all the time. Last week I had a 'holding' bottle of gin on a supermarket delivery order that I meant to go back and change. Totally forgot. Gin got delivered. Must have looked like a right alkie!!

You're right - just declare with employer as slightly grey area. It could be seen as a bribe to get your companies business but declaring takes that accusation out of the equation. Hopefully you get to keep the money, can you let us know the outcome?

cultureplanet · 29/10/2023 13:00

Wow that is quite a turnaround i such a short space of time!

cultureplanet · 29/10/2023 13:01

@CushionLover

You think you looked like an alcoholic for buying one bottle of gin?

SpeedbirdSquawker · 29/10/2023 13:04

@cultureplanet you're so unpleasant! I'm doing well now and if that's in such a short time then well done to me. Piss off now.

@CushionLover I could just drink a glass of flavoured gin and lemonade right now!

I wasn’t being facetious op

i was on your other thread giving advice

ok I will bow out

@CushionLover

You think you looked like an alcoholic for buying one bottle of gin?

Hahaha not serious, but it was the only item getting home-delivered so did raise a question from the delivery guy! I think I got lumbered with a £7 delivery fee or something as well as the bottle was under £40 - or whatever the numbers are. What a numpty I am!!

cultureplanet · 29/10/2023 13:51

Oh I see!!! 😂
