Ive had an annoying cold the last couple of days - not sneezing loads more sinuses, blocked nose, headache, sore throat, body aches… I’m meant to have lots on this weekend, birthday celebrations etc…. Please give me your top tips for me to shake it off by Saturday lunchtime?!!

You can't speed up recovery. And it wouldn't be fair to infect everyone else, especially at a birthday celebration where people have made an effort to find time to celebrate someone else's event. Stay home!

First defence. Works every time.get it now...

napody · 26/10/2023 20:28

Go to bed ridiculously early. Ideally you'd be asleep by now! Couple of 8pm bedtimes really helps. And loads of fluids.

VeryGoodVeryNice · 26/10/2023 20:28

Monolaurin, 1300mg per day. And sambucol.

C1239 · 26/10/2023 20:29

I have been using first defence the last couple of days, will it help to speed up recovery?! I know what you mean @Antst but they have said they would be more disappointed if I didn’t go.

Not being pregnant, I can’t shift this bloody thing and been a week now!

good old sweat it out you, early nights and plenty hot fluids plus every tablet you can take!

I think this helps too but not once it's taken hold. So do vitamins, again before it really takes hold.
If you read up on first defence though it's nothing active at all so might just be placebo effect!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/10/2023 20:32

Get pissed.wake up next day cold gone.

GarlicGrace · 26/10/2023 20:34

Day Nurse works like magic. It's a bit of a sledgehammer. Careful when drinking on it, you might feel drunker than expected.

If you can take a day off, stay in bed, drink loads of hot fluids (honey & lemon, perhaps) and get yourself very hot. Your immune system partially works by increasing your temperature, so - unscientific, but not untested - give it a prod.

Have a nice time.

romdowa · 26/10/2023 20:35

Hot whiskey and lemon with cloves before bed.

C1239 · 26/10/2023 20:37

Thank you everyone! Fingers crossed some of this works! Does anyone else find they always get the lurgy at the most inconvenient time?!

Lots of water and paracetamol, if it's COVID it might just be done by Saturday! I've just come out of it and it lasted 4 days, you never know. Don't go though if you feel ill...

SnapBang · 26/10/2023 20:40

Oh I could have written this! I’m in bed, haven’t moved in two days with the worst cold ever! Sinuses totally blocked so can’t sleep. Headache is awwwful, ear ache really bad too and body aches in my muscles. It hurts to try and talk, throat feels like it’s been cut on the inside (it hasn’t just very sharp pain). I haven’t eaten anything in two days, trying to sip water and lucozade but that’s painful enough. We have a big party Saturday night and I’m sooo sad to miss it. I’ll be resting in bed again tomorrow and seeing what happens. Hope you feel better very soon OP!

C1239 · 26/10/2023 20:44

Aww hope you feel better soon too @SnapBang . It’s not covid so must just be general lurgy. I know I shouldn’t go if I’m still feeling rough but I feel so guilty and that I’m letting people down by not going!

Really, every single person at those events wants a sick person to show up? I'd be furious if I were a guest and a sick person attended.

Even if you and the person who told you to attend while sick are the only ones there, that person could infect other people later on.

We all lived through the pandemic and we all know that it's absolutely not acceptable to attend any event when we're sick.

Samahan - Ayurvedic Lemsip.

BlueBellsArePretty · 26/10/2023 21:16

If you have Amazon prime order full spectrum oregano capsules and a neti pot. Oregano has amazing antiviral properties but take a capsule before your dinner so it doesn't upset your tummy. Also rinse your sinuses out with the neti pot.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/10/2023 21:20

Antihistamine, then go to bed.

C1239 · 26/10/2023 21:29

Is it ok to take Sambucol and metatone? Or is it one or the other?

grayhairdontcare · 26/10/2023 21:39

@GarlicGrace you can't buy Day Nurse anymore

gotomomo · 26/10/2023 21:41

Sorry can't help with solutions but I'm in the same boat except I need to go out tomorrow, no choice

Sugarfish · 26/10/2023 21:41

I swear I once got rid of a cold in 48 hours by drinking two cartons of Tropicana and sheer willpower

Howmanysleepsnow · 26/10/2023 21:41

Sweat. That’s why you get a temperature- it’s your body’s way of killing viruses. So: hot bath, hot drinks, loads of blankets and repeat.
Also- calories and sleep! Fuel your body for the fight.
And fluids: colds inflame muscous membranes and in doing so dehydrate you, which makes you feel hangover-rough. Drinking lots of fluids won’t cure the cold but it can help shake that feeling.
