To think student funding is in crisis and yet another area this government just can’t be bothered to fix.

To get access to full loans your family needs to earn under £25k. In this climate many families above can’t afford to top up and fund now sky high rental fees and utilities as they’re paying for rises in their own. There is now a two tier uni experience with the children of those under £25k and richer families able to top up able to attend uni full time and eat.

Why is it ok for for young people to live in poverty just because they’re students ? Also why is parental income taken into account for an 18 year old at uni living away from home but not for an 18 year old living at home receiving Universal Credit?

The system would be improved by raising the amount students can borrow and also making it clearer to parents that most are expected to contribute.

So what do you think should happen to students whose parents can't or refuse to contribute? Also why should parents be contributing to pay for an adults education? They are often 18 and could be married or have their own children and not be dependent on their parents.

The country is on its knees, it can’t afford to support everything anymore - we can’t afford for everyone to go to uni

We are one of the world's richest countries and can afford to spend millions on random vanity projects. We are not on our knees. We could be doing much better if the government actually invested in it's people, rather than trying to make themselves richer at the expense of everyone else.

That doesn't mean that everyone goes to university though, but affordable good quality tertiary education is needed for those who wouldn't succeed at university so that they can better themselves too.

I haven't said parents should have to contribute. Ideally they shouldn't but if they are meant to it should be clear as at the moment many parents don't seem to get it. I was a student in the 80s and the expected parental contribution was explicit then.

That wasn't an emotive post.

It was written quite 'sang froid'.

Anyway how do folks think Labour can do better?

So 'sang froid' that you are unable to read the whole article that clearly states Starmer had to change position because of the financial mess he is set to inherit. At least he was truthful about the situation before the electorate decide how to vote. There is a huge difference between that and premeditated lies and deceit to one's own end. This is quite another matter.

The ‘Boris Bus’ Brexit slogan that Britain sends £350m to Brussels a week that could be spent on the NHS is a lie, Jean-Claude Juncker has said.
