Recovery from pneumonia

KitKatrunchie · 25/10/2023 21:24

I have been feeling unwell with sore throat etc for 3 weeks on Friday I was coughing and wretching/choking and when I coughed. Doctor didn’t see me but decided to place me on 2 week pathway for cancer.
mover the weekend I worsened and went to out of hours on Monday where I was told I had a chest infection and given antibiotics
continues really bad coughing, fatigue, headache sweats, coughing so much I’m in pain and when it starts I can’t stop have to drink loads of hot drinks to soothe it
if I move in breathless and even when sat there I’m breathless. Been back to docs today and been given steroids and told to rest and that it’s pneumonia

anyone have any idea of recovery time on this?
i feel so tired and as a single mum it’s worrying me

Have you improved at all since starting to take the antibiotics and steroids?

JanetandRita · 25/10/2023 21:32

Rest rest rest. I had it in January. I had pneumonia then pleurisy. Keep doctor updated if you feel any worse or if the steroids don't help. Rest is so important. It was about 6 weeks to feel like I was a bit better but full recovery unfortunately will depend on your health, age, severity etc. I still get chest pain with deep breaths. Feel better soon.

Iloveeatingmygreens · 25/10/2023 21:33

I had pneumonia. Admitted to hospital and quite ill. Recovered really quickly once treated although I was warned it could take months ( thankfully for me it didn't). If you aren't improving I'd check back in with your GP through.

DisquietintheRanks · 25/10/2023 21:35

Poor you! Pneumonia is nasty (you probably realise this). I'd say 6 weeks for a full recovery but you really need to start by taking your meds and doing as close to nothing as possible. Do you have family that could come and stay for a bit to help you out or could the kids father take them for a week or so? It's a serious illness so you shouldn't be afraid of asking for that level of help.

And if it doesn't respond or gets worse then get seen, even if that's via a&e.

Al679 · 25/10/2023 21:41

Poor you. I had it a few years ago. Went from being fit and healthy to hospitalised in an acute medical ward within a week. It took me four months to start to feel like me again and seven before I fully recovered. I’d echo the other advice - if you’re not noticeably getting better in a few days seek help again. I didn’t fit the standard demographic for getting it and therefore was really quite sick before I got taken seriously from my gp.

Take care of yourself and wishing you a quick recovery.

Not really since antibiotics and only taken steroids this evening but I have had a break front the coughing this evening

I had pneumonia (one side only) that hit me like an express train one evening after a horrible bug that had lasted 10:days already. Painful, very shallow breathing - I phoned 111, an ambulance came and I was blue-lighted to hospital with my heart rate in the stratosphere. Was in for 3 weeks, loads of ABs, 2 different (concurrent) ones at first. Then had pleurisy on top, had to have a drain in that lung.

Rest is vital. I was very weak and wobbly on arriving home, but within a couple of months was more or less back to normal. The hospital physio said, ‘Don’t push yourself’ - and I didn’t.

OP, if you don’t start to feel a lot better very soon, then please contact your GP, or phone 111 and lay it on thick.

Well that sounds positive but if you’re not showing improvement by the morning it would be worth calling 111. Do you have a pulse oximeter? And is your temperature high still?

HungryandIknowit · 25/10/2023 22:25

I had a mild case. Took about 8 / 9 weeks to feel completely normal (no pain, etc.). Agree with others - contact doc if it doesn't start to improve within the next day or two or A&E if it gets worse (I was told this by a nurse at the practice). Listen to your body, rest, and get lots of sleep. Eat well. Don't drink (not that you feel like it I expect). I think they should also schedule a chest x-ray for you. I had one although I had to wait a few weeks. Get well soon.

Feelingfree2023 · 25/10/2023 22:33

I had double pneumonia and was on life support for 12 days. My evil sister came to the hdu making nasty remarks about how she 'just got on with things.' Two weeks later I was back in with bilateral pleural effusions.

17 years later, I still have upper body pain and breathing difficulties. It is your body and you must treat yourself very gently. It will go, but you deserve treating well and not being rushed by anyone....even yourself.

Take good care OP 🌷🌷

weeks & weeks & weeks before it feels behind you
Not me, but xH's experience. About 4 months to recover, really

twmo Is being kept down by paracetemol which is good and my oxygen is 96% so not as good as it could be but not awful

How are you this morning?

Cnidarian · 26/10/2023 07:14

I've got it too. Pleurisy this week as well, I've seen the doctor twice and tried 2 courses of antibiotics, it is improving now but so so tired. I've been off work 3 weeks, I can't imagine I will be back next week.

How are you this morning?

Still coughing a lot and got no sleep as steroids made me have palpitations but I do think I’m getting better

Did anyone on this thread have crackles when breathing in and out with it also? I’m week 4 and still coughing, get breathless and sounds like I have popping candy when I breathe in and out.

Dr could still hear crackles on lower left lung last week, so had x ray Tuesday.

also to note I’ve had severe tonsillitis on top of recovering from pneumonia this week! 🤮
