I think they look awful. Will the next trend be extending the ‘scrunch’ seam to show off your camel toe as well as your arse crack?

I wondered this too. It's surely just a matter of time if it hasn't already been invented. Envy

WinterDeWinter · 26/10/2023 06:47

We-ell, it no longer seems to be ok to hunt or sacrifice each other, or do myriad other things that we’ve ‘always’ done. So clearly something else is at play. Perrhaps you read up on how power structures enforce and replicate themselves?

I don’t think it’s a conspiracy - does anyone? It’s not a secret. We live in a patriarchal society. It’s not breaking news.

Serious question: who the fuck is ‘the patriarchy’? Who is it that’s forcing us to objectify ourselves and dress a certain way?

As I point out upthread, most fashion designers, clothes makers, make-up artists, beauty entrepreneurs, aesthetic doctors, beauty & fashion marketing executives, fashion magazine editors are women.

It’s women who are enabling women to objectify themselves. Why? Because most women derive joy and satisfaction from fashion and beauty, and experimenting with their looks.

(But I guess ALL the women who dominate these industries must be suffering from ‘internalised misogyny’, right? 😂)

Haha.

Haha.

Brilliant argument. Well done.

Oh, were you actually serious? You want me to explain the concept of a patriarchal society and why we live in one today? How much time do you have? I think there are better mediums to be honest.

So are those bloody tiny shorts that are frankly about the same size as my actual underwear. I have no desire to see a teenage girl’s arse when I’m queuing for a coffee 😳

They actually position the shorts to make surebthe exact shape of their vulva shows. I really don't understand where all this is coming from 😭

Start by telling us who the patriarchy is. Actually name the groups of people this refers to and explain how they force women (i.e. remove all choice) to dress in a sexualised way. In 21st century Britain.

Then explain how the industries which promote beauty and looks are all dominated by women yet ‘the patriarchy’ (whoever these people are) is still forcing women to dress a certain way.

Because it seems to me that fashion and beauty is something that women really enjoy (and increasingly men too - male grooming is huge right now), and there’s no bullshit conspiracy at play that is forcing women to spend time and money on clothes and make-up. We choose to do this because we ENJOY it.

shockwaze · 26/10/2023 07:07

I don't believe in the patriarchy by the way

The notion of people not believing in the patriarchy is far more terrifying than scrunch bum leggins.

Perhaps someone will be along to bow to your demands before I get home from work and have time on where to start on this one.

Usernamen · 26/10/2023 07:11

The patriarchy is a bullshit concept to help feminists come to terms with the fact that most women do not share their dull, anti-sex world-view. See also “internalised misogyny”.

Heaven forbid a young, heterosexual woman enjoy and thrive off male attention!

Timeturnerplease · 26/10/2023 07:13

Returning to the original post….is there not a chafing issue with these? Surely squats etc cause a flossing type effect between the cheeks?

Unusualactualname · 26/10/2023 07:16

Haha can't be flat 'cos cats would congregate at the edge to knock stuff off.

TerfTalking · 26/10/2023 07:16

I’d never heard of these before MN, then I went to the Manchester Half Marathon last week and they were absolutely everywhere. Lots of women bending and stretching at the warm up area, there were too many to avert my eyes.

it was not attractive and I can’t imagine comfortable five sweaty miles in.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 26/10/2023 07:22

shockwaze · 26/10/2023 06:11

No. What's needed is taste-shaming. Body-shaming refers to the bum under the hideous leggings and no one's bum should be shamed.

The irony of this post!!!!

How is that ironic?

shockwaze · 26/10/2023 07:36

Cos you're saying taste-shaming is ok.

Shaming is either ok, or it's not

@retinolalcohol mate, I hate to break it to you but no one looks good in skin tight beige leggings. No one.

These leggings remind me of the stuff you see in niche Brazilian shapewear shops in parts of London with large Latin American communities.

Restingbitch2 · 26/10/2023 07:36

Laughing to myself at the posts that imply critics of scrunch bum leggings must be frumpy old farts with saggy arses who are purely jealous they can’t wear them. 😆

Even if my arse was like Kylie Minogue’s golden-hotpants-wearing arse of the 90s, it is my opinion that they still look dreadful. They are comically awful. Eg I visited my (very stylish) mum and they cropped up in conversation as she has seen them in her town and was horrified that they were now a thing. She said something like “Have you seen these disgusting new trousers that stick up your arse?” 🙈

Brumbies · 26/10/2023 07:37

All leggings are awful . Most ugliest fashion ever.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/10/2023 07:40

I see you and raise you - ski pants.

sollenwir · 26/10/2023 07:42

PinkRoses1245 · 25/10/2023 22:08

I don’t think anyone looks good in any leggings really.

I disagree, 'normal' (so well made and fitted but not up the crack of your a*) can be fine, especially if worn under something like a shirt dress or a long fitted sweater in the winter, with a pair of boots. They can look essentially like tights. I also have the fleece lined ones, which are much warmer than most of my other trousers in winter but also easier to wash and dry. I am not a fan of tights, due to the feeling on my feet, but leggings or footless tights are a staple in my winter wardrobe. Leggings and a decent length top are fine for exercising too.

sollenwir · 26/10/2023 07:43

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/10/2023 07:40

Do not blacken the memory of my much wanted cerise pink ski pants and electric blue/cerise pink jumper combo in the 1980's.....I won't let you. 😜

LadyBird1973 · 26/10/2023 07:47

Even if you have the most beautiful bum in the world, no one needs to see it at the bus stop!
And while women should obviously have the right to wear whatever they like, it doesn't stop certain things from looking ridiculous. And men shouldn't be condemned for looking - how could you not.
Men shouldn't leer or say anything inappropriate but you can't blame them for noticing or doing a double take - that's a normal reaction to people out in public with what looks like their naked arse on show!
