They look smelly.

On an individual level, I don’t care what women wear. On a societal level, I hate the idea that women’s clothing has morphed to needing to accentuate and draw attention to the anus, like some kind of baboon mating call. There doesn’t seem any such need for men to draw attention to their anus and rounded butt cheeks. We might kid ourselves that wearing what we want is empowering, and our arse exercises more effectively on display, but I hate that so many young women are essentially willing to buy into their own objectification by big corporates.

Women are free to choose to ‘objectify’ themselves and more and more are doing so. It’s incredibly patronising to suggest that they are being manipulated by ‘big corporates’. Plenty of young, hot, heterosexual women thrive off male (and female) attention, and it was ever thus.

Within the ‘big corporates’, most fashion designers, clothes makers, make-up artists, beauty entrepreneurs, and beauty & fashion marketing executives are women. Women are enabling women to sexualise themselves because (most) women derive joy and satisfaction from looking good to the opposite sex (and to other women - I am convinced this is actually a bigger driver!)

Taketheplunge · 26/10/2023 05:33

Best you put them on the right way round

4timesthefun · 26/10/2023 05:35

You are totally free to believe that. I’ll believe it when I see men‘s clothing designed to draw attention to their anus.

I've seen parades where some of the guys wear bottomless chaps, does that count?

Usernamen · 26/10/2023 05:41

Women choose what to wear.

I have never heard of a gym imposing a uniform of skimpy leggings and crop tops, nor a public beach demanding that women wear a bikini or go topless.

Women are choosing how to dress and wearing what they feel they look good in. It’s not always to my taste, nor to anyone over 25’s taste, but that’s neither here nor there.

BridgetsBigPants · 26/10/2023 05:46

🙄 this thread is peak mumsnet and not in a good way. I don't personally like them, so I don't wear them but the ridiculous pearl clutching and over the top ridicule is a joke. Imagine grown women being so concerned with what other women are wearing.

Siameasy · 26/10/2023 06:03

They’re minging. A mum at the school had a flesh coloured pair of the smooth ones and I defo had a wtf face as you could see the front bottom. Which is deliberate.🤢
Presumably it attracts men?

WinterDeWinter · 26/10/2023 06:09

Middleagedmeangirls · 25/10/2023 21:44

It's an age thing. we all dislike what the next generation favours.

My mum was young in the fifties /sixties and her mum hated her big skirts and back combed hair . I was young in the seventies/eighties and my parents hated punk styles, permed big hair and shoulder pads. My own kids were young in the noughties and I wasn't crazy about the emo look they favoured.

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

I think what’s depressing is that these are WAY more sexualised than the other looks you mention. They look like a bodysuit an actress would wear so she can do an explicit sex scene without being officially naked.

Things really are going backwards for women.

shockwaze · 26/10/2023 06:11

No. What's needed is taste-shaming. Body-shaming refers to the bum under the hideous leggings and no one's bum should be shamed.

The irony of this post!!!!

I agree but women have chosen to objectify themselves so complaints about being objectified shouldn’t be taken seriously.
It’s done to compete with other women as well.

Gingernan · 26/10/2023 06:18

Exactly.

Many on MN can’t get their head around some women choosing to dress in an attention-seeking way, whether for men or for other women (I’m convinced it’s more for the latter….).

No one is forcing anyone to wear skimpy leggings or a thong bikini - they are CHOOSING TO.

FreddiesTeeth · 26/10/2023 06:25

Had to Google these. Kenny Everett and Rod Stewart spring to mind.
The saddest thing is the repeated idea that they somehow 'empower' women. FFS .

Gingernan · 26/10/2023 06:27

Oh gosh hilarious aren't they? Interestingly sold out on Amazon so people are snapping them up. I must tell my partner about them at the weekend, the reaction is likely to be incredulous, we are old though.

Normal people in the gym do not care what other people are wearing.

Normal people in the gym are more bothered about their workouts.

Normal people in the gym do not care to be noticed. You know why? Because they’re just there for their workout.

It’s only the Pearl clutches who believe women must cover up like the 1950’s who like to judge other women. Much like the OP and the majority of Pearl clutches on this thread.

Yeah men check out women. In the gym, in the pub, in the supermarket, at the petrol station, on the train. Most public places. Do I like being checked out by men in the gym? No. But I ignore it and just concentrate on my workout.

These leggings are literally designed to sexualise you as you work out.

that’s what’s depressing. Most of us are clutching our pearls because young women are being objectified more than ever before - not because ‘they’re not covered up like the 50s.’

this attitude is so laughable. These things don’t happen in a vacuum. You think girls randomly choose to objectify themselves - look at the world around you.

FFS they’re choosing to wear these leggings - it’s not like there’s a uniform imposed by gyms of skimpy leggings and crop tops and no one else is allowed in.

Some women like the attention - that’s why they choose to ‘objectify’ themselves. There’s no conspiracy at play - young heterosexual women have always enjoyed experimenting with their looks, for male (and female) attention.

It’s just internalised misogyny @Usernamen

Which came first, the patriarchy or the self-objectification - I wonder eh? It’s a mystery.

I don’t think it’s a conspiracy - does anyone? It’s not a secret. We live in a patriarchal society. It’s not breaking news.

Conkersinautumn · 26/10/2023 06:40

I innocently thought the point was also "I'm not wearing underwear" leggings clearly show vpl and perhaps for some they wanted to really emphasise that. But yes, I hadn't considered this as advertising their arse for interested parties. We are apes I guess. Maybe the next step will include their social media names or phone number on each cheek

Where did I say it was ‘random’? It isn’t random. Young women have sought attention from men and other women through their looks since time began - read up on evolutionary biology.

(That isn't shaming, if you want to follow the attest trend for swxual signalling I don't really care). They make me chortle though, I'm childish about seeing someone's arse.
