Poo question! What would you expect nursery to do?

If you picked up your child from nursery and when you went into the room to get them they said they'd done a poo.

Would you expect nursery to change it even though the parent was there or would you expect nursery to let the child go with a full nappy?

Probably to offer to change it or to show me where I can change it?

Londonrach1 · 25/10/2023 19:04

Depends when it happens....if just as you arrived it's a grey area

KateyCuckoo · 25/10/2023 19:04

I'm a childminder and I do change the child.

SaracensMavericks · 25/10/2023 19:05

Either parent or nursery worker could change it under these circumstances. Probably easier for the parent as pick up time is often quite a busy time.

KateyCuckoo · 25/10/2023 19:06

I will also add that I expect the child to be dropped off clean or offer to change. Mornings are busy and I've had one in the past dropped off needing a full change (leaky poo) at least once a week!

LittleMG · 25/10/2023 19:07

I’d expect to change myself or take home and change. I’d be a bit 😐 but honestly this has happened to me and it hasn’t bothered me my nursery for my son with great.

BarnacleBeasley · 25/10/2023 19:07

My child is notorious at nursery for doing a 5pm poo just before home time. I won't put him in the car in a pooey nappy for 20 mins, so he needs to be changed straight away. They always offer. If he is distressed (because he's seen Mummy and doesn't want to go off and get changed with staff) they will sometimes ask if I'd rather do it myself, but they prefer to do it. I wouldn't be allowed if there was already another child being changed in the changing room for safeguarding reasons.

Pitapatter11 · 25/10/2023 19:08

Thanks. Dh was a bit unhappy that they didn't change him, I think it's a bit of a grey area as you say however it is a bit of a running theme at the moment I.e. picking child up with a huge nappy (often leaked). Usually only wee though.

Felt bad as I hadn't brought any nappies with me as I was just popping him in the car and driving the 5 mins home. But then his bum was a little sore when we got back so I don't think he'd just poo'd the second I arrived.

It depends on the nursery.

The one DD3 went to would show you where to go to change it - a parent/visitors toilet with a changing mat.

DD4’s nursery only allowed staff to change nappies on the premises.

lamalamalamasquirrel · 25/10/2023 19:09

The staff at mine always offer if this happens to mine. I always say that's ok show me the room and I'll do it.

LunaLoveFood · 25/10/2023 19:09

When I worked in a nursery, nursery staff would be expected to change child, as due to safeguarding, parents not allowed in toilet/changing area. We wouldn't expect child to go home in soiled nappy.

I'd ask them to keep an eye on his nappy as you're noticing it's very full at pick up

Pitapatter11 · 25/10/2023 19:10

Nursery worker was stood with us so they knew he'd poo'd as he came and told us both. I sort of assumed she'd offer but when she didn't I got him home as quick as I could instead. Perhaps should have just asked then!

Yes I'll speak to them about the full nappies. I hate to complain as I absolutely adore the nursery in every other way.

This happened to me just last week - they let me in to change it, although it's a preschool not a nursery. It was finishing time so no other children in the toilet/ changing area. I wouldn't expect the staff to do it after closing time.

It wasn't closing time. It was about 4:45

I always check children a few minutes before their pick up time and check again before taking children out to parents. I'd never send a child home in a soiled nappy. We are a small nursery though so less chaotic than larger ones I've worked in. We currently have 6 babies in the baby room. My last nursery had 37!

IfYouDontAsk · 25/10/2023 19:15

They should offer to change the nappy and I’d be really disappointed if they didn’t.

Sorry - I meant it was closing time at my DS's preschool and staff were busy. But they should have either offered you a room or offered to change your DS.

Zanatdy · 25/10/2023 19:22

Our nursery would always change it then, but sometimes my child would cry so I’d go and take over

Ratfinkstinkypink · 25/10/2023 19:22

I would be furious of my little one left school in a soiled pad and was expected to travel home like it (specialist nursery school). I have worked in nurseries and special schools in the past and would not have handed over a child who needed a change of nappy/pad.

You need to ask for a nappy if it happens again, or he will get sore. When mine were at nursery I think they often went too long without being changed

Jk987 · 25/10/2023 19:26

This happened yesterday! I said I'd change it but they would have done it. I was happy to. They work hard and are lovely to the children. It turned out they'd only changed her 10 minutes previously but you can never predict 😂

BarnacleBeasley · 25/10/2023 19:27

Basically, whether it's you or the staff who change him, they shouldn't be expecting children to leave with a pooey nappy still on, so I think your DH is right to be a bit annoyed.

Coffeerum · 25/10/2023 19:30

Our nursery would always change DD. They’ve even said if we got around the corner and she did a poo then bring her back and they will happily change her.

Occasionally DD has come out with a poo as she goes at the end of the day and I tell them and they take her straight in.
