Poo question! What would you expect nursery to do?

If you picked up your child from nursery and when you went into the room to get them they said they'd done a poo.

Would you expect nursery to change it even though the parent was there or would you expect nursery to let the child go with a full nappy?

My DD was notorious for this. I’d just change her myself in the class changing area after getting the necessary stuff out of her cubby. They would always offer but I let them off that one! Not UK though so potentially different rules re safeguarding and access to changing areas. Under no circumstances would I leave with them dirty though!

This happened with my DD once and I changed her. They did offer but it would have felt weird standing by whilst someone else changed her, and also technically as it was pick up she was on my time not theirs.
However if they are leaving him in dirty nappies then that's a different issue and yes I would address that.

It's amazing how many children "just happen" to poo and wee right at pick-up time. And have nappy rash. Amazing. Back in the real world, the nursery probably left him in the poo for an hour and a half since nap finished at 3 and before you collected him. Not changing him when they know there is a poo is vile, it's not remotely like a full wee and I'd have removed my child.

Nursery always offered to change mine in this circumstance.

Marmite27 · 26/10/2023 18:13

For what it’s worth, nursery provided nappies, so they were using their stock, not mine too.

Mariposista · 26/10/2023 18:17

Depends on the situation - if they are also doing handover of 15 other children, it is very difficult to be without one member of staff, possible out of just 2 or 3 to change a nappy. If it's quiet, yes they could offer or show DH where he could do it (if parents are allowed access to the facilities, each nursery is different). I wouldn't split hairs over it though - I'd just change the kid at home.

Unless you live just a few houses away, it's horrible for a child to have to sit in poo for a journey home. So I'd expect them to change it

Jk987 · 26/10/2023 18:25

There's no question they need to be changed before travelling home, the OP is not debating this.

Who does it shouldn't be an issue. If you want to wait for a staff member to be free to change them and then watch while they do it, fill your boots. I'd just do it myself. It's the end of the day, the staff have worked a long shift and it's a two minute job.

Very cynical. I don't they'd be sorry to see you and little Tarquin leave the nursery.

Mumof2teens79 · 26/10/2023 18:43

DDs nursery would ask "would you like us to change her or are you in a hurry"
I had a longish drive home so would always ask for them to change her....I did offer to do it myself, Its awkward standing and watching someone else do it for you, but they usually did it for me.

Because of the long commute it would not be possible to ensure I dropped off in a clean nappy.

I appreciate that it's not always possible to change every child right away....they have to be mindful of ratios and if others need changing first, or it's handover time, it can be tricky.

Bit of a presumption! Mine always went at around 5pm at home too so I’m 99.99% it was just her natural rhythm.

Cornflakes44 · 26/10/2023 19:04

I'd offer but they'd usual say they'll do it. My husband doesn't offer and takes her to them to do it. It feels entitled and rude to me but that's blokes for you.

snoreb · 26/10/2023 21:57

Your child, you're there you change them

Everydayimhuffling · 26/10/2023 22:24

Mine don't even bring the DC out. They just do it and let me know why it's taking longer. We have quite a long journey home, so I wouldn't be happy otherwise. I'm not picking up right at end of the day though, so that might make a difference to PP's experiences although not to OP's.
