To think that people who wear PJs outside haven't actually slept in them?

I have seen much discussion about the public wearing of PJs and it has made me curious. I haven't worn PJs in bed apart from on very cold nights and when in someone else's house in case I need the loo in the night ( and then it's a nightshirt) since I was a child. Are people really actually sleeping in the sort of night attire some report seeing people wearing in Tesco's? I can't imagine going to bed with my DH in a big, fleecy onesie or fleece PJs.
Do a lot of people wear PJs in bed? Am I unusual?
I rather thought the modern PJ wearers were having 'duvet' days and didn't change to shop, not that they'd slept in it. I thought PJs were just the new casual, loaf around the house wear, but some posters definitely seem to think people actually sleep in them. Do they?

It takes as much time to put on leggings and a jumper as it does pyjamas, so yes, they probably have slept in them. And yes, of course people sleep in pyjamas, they are hardly a modern invention.

Verv · 25/10/2023 12:13

I don't sleep in clothing.
I don't have "pjs" either though, I prefer linen drawstring trousers and a hoodie or sweatshirt round the house.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/10/2023 12:13

I always wear pyjamas in bed, whatever the temperature. However, they aren't big, fluffy things - I'd be boiling in something like that under a duvet! I have never worn pyjamas out of the house though, and I don't wear them to lounge around the house either. They are for bed only. I suspect some publuc pyjama wearers do sleep in them and some don't.

Giggorata · 25/10/2023 12:16

I would hope that public pj wearers haven't slept in them.
Tbh, it's difficult sometimes to discern what is nightwear and what is lounge/sportswear.

Then OP’s post isn’t about you then? 🤣

No, they aren't a modern invention, but the ARE an invention from a time when many homes only had a fire downstairs and Bick, thick duvets weren't a thing.

@Peepshowcreepshow and I am also wondering if people do just that...put PJs on like they would sweaters and leggings, if PJs are now considered more as 'loungewear' by some.

I don't sleep in mine, nor do my DD's, or anyone we know. Being in Liverpool they did go out in specially bought ones as younger teens. I picked my battle. I think that it's a regional thing to get up, shower and put on PJ's for the day. Lounge wear is more expensive and doesn't wash like Primark PJ's. They are great for cleaning and gardening. Although Victoria Secrets was the go to for leaving the house. Now Costco has DKNY permanently in, they've taken over.

purpleme12 · 25/10/2023 12:26

I think most people do sleep in pyjamas yes

That's true, which is what makes me wonder if people are treating PJs more like lounge wear now, rather than sleeping in them.

I wear PJs as loungewear. I generally don’t sleep in them cos i get too hot.

flaxentoad · 25/10/2023 12:28

I've never seen it where I live, but I would assume (rightly or wrongly) that they had slept in them.

Peridot1 · 25/10/2023 12:29

I sleep in pjs. Winter and summer. Would never go out in them however. If I’m slobbing around the house I’m usually in leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a top.

OhComeOnFFS · 25/10/2023 12:30

I have a horrible feeling they have slept in them.

I just can't see how someone can walk their kids to school while they are wearing pyjamas and a dressing gown and think that's a normal thing to do.

Needeyebrows · 25/10/2023 12:30

I never sleep in my pyjamas. I relax at home in them in the evening but put on a nightdress or oversized t shirt when I go to bed.

ForfarFourEastFifeFive · 25/10/2023 12:30

Judging by how the few pyjama wearing shoppers I’ve encountered smelled, they have definitely slept in them and not washed before going out.

AnotherDayAnotherDream · 25/10/2023 12:31

The type of person who is slobbish enough to go out shopping in PJ’s won’t have got up and put clean pyjamas on to do so.

The history of pjs is interesting because they were just clothing. Until after ww1 children would be sewn into their clothes for winter after being padded out with paper or flannel. The rope works etc, people would sleep in their clothes. It was only the likes of miners who didn't. To have dedicated nightwear was a luxury most couldn't afford. Men would strip to their long John's etc. The restraints on female clothing has thankfully gone. My sister (68) made a comment about gym wear, but I'm glad to see the confidence and practicality in women's clothes. We bloody totted about in heels (70/80's).

Abouttimemum · 25/10/2023 12:32

I wear long pj bottoms and long sleeved pj top. I like to be covered and warm. I don’t go out in them though, unless I need to pop to the shop late in the evening.

OhComeOnFFS · 25/10/2023 12:33

But why do you go to the shop in your pyjamas? Why wouldn't you change? It would only take a minute.

Abouttimemum · 25/10/2023 12:33

Also i slob in a jumper and joggers and change into pjs just before bed.

404usernotfound · 25/10/2023 12:34

I think it’s gross to go out in something you have slept overnight in. Human parasites are more active at night, and to go out in clothes you have slept in means you are more likely to be spreading them around.

However I think “loungewear” has made the boundaries less distinct. There are joggers marketed as PJs, similar to ones marketed as loungewear, similar to ones marketed as sportswear, so the only real distinction is whether you actually slept in it.

BitofaStramash · 25/10/2023 12:34

I've never seen public pj wearing but can't imagine that people with such low standards would care about hygiene

justplodding · 25/10/2023 12:34

I occasionally go out in what i class as my jammies if im doing a pickup at sports clubs or a late night dash to the shop to get milk.

But my jammies look more like loungewear and i sleep naked so they have never been slept in.

I personally would never go out in slept in clothes.

Because I don’t want to get changed again for the sake of 3 minutes. It’s maybe happed 3 times in the last 5 years!
