To think that people who wear PJs outside haven't actually slept in them?

I have seen much discussion about the public wearing of PJs and it has made me curious. I haven't worn PJs in bed apart from on very cold nights and when in someone else's house in case I need the loo in the night ( and then it's a nightshirt) since I was a child. Are people really actually sleeping in the sort of night attire some report seeing people wearing in Tesco's? I can't imagine going to bed with my DH in a big, fleecy onesie or fleece PJs.
Do a lot of people wear PJs in bed? Am I unusual?
I rather thought the modern PJ wearers were having 'duvet' days and didn't change to shop, not that they'd slept in it. I thought PJs were just the new casual, loaf around the house wear, but some posters definitely seem to think people actually sleep in them. Do they?

@Utterbunkum
But I think the crux of the problem for many who see this as lazy is because they didn't get dressed. People don't see it as lazy to go to the shops in leggings and a jumper, because they don't associate those clothes with sleep. If some people treat PJs as lounge wear in the day, as some have said they do, but haven't slept in them, what's lazy about it? It's Tesco's, not the Ritz.

People who go shopping in leggings and a jumper have at least made an effort to get dressed. That's the difference.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 25/10/2023 20:20

Who knew there were so many opinions on peoples pjs. Personally I don’t care if they wear it out or if they changed from wearing them overnight. You do you. Calling people
disgusting is a tad too far I think.

LetTheBloodyDogOut · 25/10/2023 20:24

But they might not have. They could be yesterday’s leggings and jumper than they’ve slept in and jumped straight in the car to go to Tesco in the following morning. 🤣

Utterbunkum · 25/10/2023 20:42

@usernother so, then, your problem is that they haven't got dressed, ergo you presume they slept in them. So yes, your problem is that you think they have slept in them because they are PJs. What I am saying is they may not have slept in them. They may have dressed in them for a day at home with the kids, realised they need something and popped out to get it.

For fuck's sake... PJs, not PJs, lounge wear, slept in or not....

How the fuck does any of that take anything away from your own shopping experience? Get a grip!

usernother · 25/10/2023 20:47

Look, I just hate seeing it, think it looks slovenly, I couldn't care less about if they've had a thorough scrub down and just put them on that morning. I don't like it.

mydogisthebest · 25/10/2023 20:47

I sleep naked all year with a 4.5 tog. I am never cold in bed. My sister wears big thick pyjamas and socks and has a thick duvet and often uses an electric blanket and/or a hot water bottle! It makes me feel ill to even think about how hot I would get.

I do wear pyjama bottoms with a teeshirt around the house but don't go out in them.

HamstersAreMyLife · 25/10/2023 20:48

I have night pjs in a thin cuffed Jersey fabric, usually primark or asda as they're the best and then I have day pjs for days I'm not leaving the house or on the Teams. I often wear day pj bottoms for work calls but I change into them after the school run. Day pjs are big and fleecy to keep me warm without the heating on!

greenhydrangea · 25/10/2023 20:54

Utterbunkum · 25/10/2023 12:27

That's true, which is what makes me wonder if people are treating PJs more like lounge wear now, rather than sleeping in them.

Well, let's see. Are they chic or elegant people in other ways? No. Then the likelihood is they have rolled out of bed in their pjs and gone out in public in them. It's not the new Lululemon, it's not an alternative to active wear - it is slobs having no sense of decorum.

CherryMyBrandy · 25/10/2023 21:53

I sleep in PJs unless it's super hot. Even then I sleep in a vest top and shorts. I don't like sleeping with nothing on.

CherryMyBrandy · 25/10/2023 22:02

I agree with @kitsuneghost Owning a dog is definitely more disgusting than popping out in your PJs (slept in or not!). Dog's walk about outside then straight in your house. They stink (if you are a dog owner your house smells, take my word for it), they lick stuff, including your face 🤮, they eat and chew stuff and slobber on stuff around the house. Some dogs literally eat shit 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮. Dogs are pretty gross tbh.

anonimoxyz · 25/10/2023 22:04

I don't sleep in anything fleecy because that makes me too hot but I would sleep in a T-shirt and wide legged trousers and maybe chick on a fleecy hoodie late at night and early morn when I'm still wearing jammies: wouldn't leave house dressed in them though!

Don't bite. PP is known for their very anti dog comments on threads nowt to do with dogs.

This. The pearl clutching over people who are clothed is ridiculous. They are covered up and I can't see that it's any different to going out in a tracksuit. Just different colours or prints. In the whole scheme of things it's really not important.

There's too much of people trying to tell others what to do when it's something really unimportant.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/10/2023 22:23

There is something very infantile about adults who are constantly physically disgusted to a ridiculous degree by perfectly normal things, to the point that they (allegedly) retch, and post puke emojis. Keeping animals is something humans have done for thousands of years. Having pets actually benefits your health and your immune system.

LadyB49 · 25/10/2023 22:32

Last week dh and I ate out in a restaurant/diner. It was early, around 5pm.

At a nearby table was a family of 7. All very noisy and untidy. Looked like 3 generations. Older male 60ish with grey hair in ponytail wearing t shirt and tartan PJ bottoms. 4 other adults male and female all in pretty creased PJs or lounge wear, hard to tell.
2 teens in PJs plus fleece dressing gowns and slippers.
For dessert staff carried in a birthday cake w with sparkling candles and singing happy birthday.

It takes all sorts.

Londiniumrocks · 25/10/2023 22:32

F’ck me people have got lazy!

Londiniumrocks · 25/10/2023 22:33

When I see adults outside in ‘loungewear’ ie jammies I assume there’s something wrong with them- depression maybe

QuestionableMouse · 25/10/2023 22:35

I sleep nude or in pants and a cami then put clean PJ's on when I get up - they may stay on all day if I'm not going out (saves cat hairs/clicks on my nice clothes!) or I'll change into clothes when I need to go out.

TheHateIsNotGood · 25/10/2023 22:37

And why I wear Men's PJs, I don't want skimpy t-shirt and shorts ensembles, I want pockets and flannely plaid in winter and similarly designed lightweight PJs in summer. Not to go to the shops - but to do domestic stuff early/late inside and outside including coffee in the morning.

I'm considering getting an apron and/or housecoat too as they look very practical. And also see the merit of those ubiquitous Headscarfs that seem so outdated today.

Woollymonster · 26/10/2023 06:56

Utterbunkum
I think your theory is correct. You only have to see the number of people on here who state they love getting into PJs when they get home from work, to realise that they are loungewear for many.
Although I do accept that some shoppers may sleep in them too.

I dont walk about my big tesco in my jammies

Why does the size of the Tesco branch make any difference? Confused

Because im not doing a big shop, im running into my tesco express and grabbing milk, also this is always at night not in the morning.

Edited

Sounds reasonable to me.

LBFseBrom · 02/03/2024 17:22

I haven't seen people wearing obvious nightclothes but there is leisure wear which one can sleep in or wear to shops. Just look like joggers or leggings and a top. That's OK, they're comfortable and decent.

fliptopbin · 02/03/2024 17:34

We have several cats in pur household who believe that laps should not be unoccupied. All of us change into pyjama bottoms when we get home, otherwise all of our trousers would be full of claw holes. I never sleep in them and I wouldn't go out in them, but I wouldn't have a heart attack over answering the door in pj bottoms, a hoodie and no makeup.
