In A&E worrying I’m being a complete hypochondriac

I’ve been getting daily headaches for around 6 months with random dizziness and loud whooshing sounds in my ears that get so loud I can’t hear anything for about 30 seconds. GP never seemed overly phased so I’ve always just taken paracetamol and got on with it. I never get migraines, just your standard headaches.

On Saturday morning I woke up with a banging headache that is still ongoing. I’ve been taking paracetamol and ibruprofun around the clock, tried relaxing activities etc, and nothing is stopping it. I’ve been feeling incredibly dizzy and nauseous with it and its just a prolonging, heavy headache that doesn’t come and go, it stays - It seems to be worsening so I called the doctor yesterday and explained what was happening thinking she would give me some better painkillers. She told me she wants me to go to A&E because she’s concerned and wants me to get a scan. I got some cocodamol and decided to stay at home because I just felt so silly.

It’s worsening even more today and I haven’t coped with it at all so I’m here at A&E waiting to be seen by a doctor. Been given codeine by triage but not touching it at all.

The headache is all across the front of my head and temples.

Ive had the dizziness, some blurry vision (looks like most in my eyes), nausea and feeling weaker than normal but bright lights don’t bother me and my neck isn’t stiff. I’ve never had a proper migraine before so wouldn’t know whether this is one or not.

Anyway, anyone experienced this before or have any advice? I’m feeling quite silly being here and worried they’re going to think I’m a hypochondriac.

Many migraine sufferers can use their phone, even during particularly bad ones!

Hence I said PROBABLY.

Atmytethersend · 26/10/2023 03:33

This happened me. Went to a and e and ended up in hospital for a week. They did a lumbar puncture and found I had an infection in my brain fluid. IV antibiotics for a 5 days and it was sorted

Smurfmurf · 26/10/2023 06:58

I hope you’re doing alright OP and that your home.

I was having serious issues with double vision, keep walking to the left, headaches, depression, aches and pains, doctor referred me to NHS who want to put me on steroids, researched online the implications of steroid use and also found on You-tube some non-medical advice. Started taking B12, Vitamin D with K 2 and the most beneficial was Magnesium Glycinate.

Magnesium is suppose to be great for migraines.

I gave up wheat, started eating whole foods. It worked for me, hopefully you find your way

How are you now OP? Hope everything's ok.

Narcises2012 · 26/10/2023 21:27

Don't ignore it. I had headache since last Monday I went to a&e and it turned out to be thunderclap headache. I assumed it was just another new ageing thing. ( I am 31 years old fyi). Apparently I had aneurism and it had bursts and I have bleed on brain. So don't ignore headaches people. Still in hospital.

Winnipeg23 · 26/10/2023 21:47

Get checked out. Much better at hospital because they have all the equipment they need there. I think you are being very sensible. Just get ready for long wait! Sending love.

CrazyHedgehogLover · 26/10/2023 21:55

Hope you’re ok OP 💐

suchsweetthunder · 26/10/2023 22:58

Hope you are ok @Narcises2012 , ruptured aneurysms are no joke. Worst pain I've ever had. Hope you get home soon - dealing with the 4 hourly pills after my embolization in hospital was terrible, I was so glad to get home to my own bed.

Tallgirlsrock · 27/10/2023 01:43

People go to A&E for far less, so I wouldn't worry.
It sounds to me like you have a migraine. I started getting them after I hit menopause. I don't always get all the symptoms, sometimes I just get a pounding head for days that nothing will touch. GP did good by telling you to go to A&E. He wants you to have a scan sooner rather than later to rule out other things such as Stroke. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon xx

Oldgardener · 27/10/2023 07:05

Stay in A&E.

SD1978 · 27/10/2023 07:54

@Oldgardener - OP went 2 days ago, and hasn't updated. Which I'm assuming/hoping means it went well and they could help.

Well they're a new poster so may never come back.

Hadenough2021 · 27/10/2023 21:04

How are you op?

prattheather1 · 27/10/2023 22:01

Hi I had similar issues a couple of years ago but headaches were migraine like. Ended up in hospital for 5 days due to low sodium. Was told very serious and put on acute Med ward. Once on a drip gradually got better and despite every test imaginable no-one ever got to the bottom of it. Just told to keep salt intake up and not drink more than 1.5 litres a day of water initially. Never come back so far but odd. Get them to check your Sodium levels for sure. Good luck and hugs it’s horrid.

Badgalkiki · 30/10/2023 18:05

Hi, OP how are you doing? Been thinking of you over the weekend and hope all is well.

Bananaandmarmite · 30/10/2023 21:38
