Making friends in your 40s and a move

We came back to London four years after being away for over two decades. Since then just moved areas for schools and whilst DC seem to have settled really well, I feel a bit lost. Now the youngest is five, it feels like it's the right time to get back to me and rebuild some sort of a social circle.

If you've moved around a lot, what tips would you have for making new friends especially when living in London. Unfortunately, most of my colleagues whilst lovely live outside London as no one can afford to live here. I am friendly with three or four mums at DCs school but I cant see us becoming real friends. Any tips for what worked for you? I look around me and most people have lots of friends by the time they get to their 40s, but we moved around so much that most of our friends are very spread out and many live abroad.

I've recently joined a local running club but dont have any other obvious hobbies. Plus with work and the kids, I cant see myself having much time. How do adults make friends if they've moved around and/or to a new area?

I just moved into a village, so a bit different. But I am trying volunteering to try and get to know people.
I wish you luck, I imagine it is harder in a bigger place like London.

Where do you volunteer? With kids and a full time job, am just not sure whether I have the time really. Not sure why am taking stock of my life, perhaps it's the move. But I definitely feel like I need to set up a new circle of friends who get me. Maybe it's also because things with DH aren't going great so I feel like I need others to connect with and talk to.
