Many books would you read in a month?

OP posts:
TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger · 23/10/2023 07:53

Used to read loads, but can't concentrate on them anymore since Covid and the lockdowns. Don't know why but I've heard others in the same situation. I've tried getting back into all kinds of things to see if anything catches but... not managed another one yet!

Mamai90 · 23/10/2023 07:58

Before children 2 or 3 a week. During lockdown I was getting through at least 4 a week. The issue is with so much choice I became much more fussy about what I would read and found it hard to find books that appealed to me. Kindle is rubbish for suggestions.

With children now maybe one every three months. I do love to read though, I just usually can't keep my eyes open when it comes to bedtime.

weathervane1 · 23/10/2023 08:03

Typically I get through 2 books in about three days. Sometimes more if it's raining heavily 😀. Of course it depends on the book. The new Ken Follett book took longer than my usual diet of crime thrillers. Also, if I'm on a roll with an author whose characters I know and love, I can devour books like a chain smoker.

SallyWD · 23/10/2023 08:06

Probably half a book! The problem is the only time I have to read is bedtime abd I'm always so tired I fall asleep. If I'm reading a very easy book (some kind of crime thriller) I can read it in ten days. Otherwise it can take me a couple of months to read a book.

andyourpointiswhat · 23/10/2023 08:06

2-3 a week usually and depending on whether or not I am in an Audible phase (I blow hot and cold) a couple a month of those.

megletthesecond · 23/10/2023 08:08

I read about four books a year since I've had children.
Even though I have teens I'm too tired to read much in the evening. At weekends I sometimes read a couple of pages before breakfast. I just listen to radio 4 mostly.

Dymaxion · 23/10/2023 08:33

Depends really, more on holiday because I have the time, but on average 2-3 a month, sometimes more. Always have a book in the car to dip into if I am sitting waiting for DS.

TodayForTomorrow · 23/10/2023 08:42

I average about one a month, but some take longer and others I can race through in a few days. My Goodreads says I average about 15 a year.

BlazingWorld · 23/10/2023 08:49

It probably averages out to four. Some books take me months, especially non fiction or doorstep hardbacks that I can't take on the train, whereas something like Agatha Christie or Elly Griffiths I will read in a day or two.

senua · 23/10/2023 08:58

What do you mean by 'reading'? At bookgroup, when we announce the next book, one annoying woman is forever saying, "I've already read this." We ask questions and she always says, "I can't remember the book, I just know that I've read it."
Does that count as reading?Hmm

I stopped reading when I was in a busy-life stage so I purposely joined bookgroup to get back into it. I'm now on about two or three a month.

senua · 23/10/2023 09:03

And as I get older and more grumpy, there are a lot more books not read. I used to think that if I started a book then I should finish it but there are quite a few DNF these days.

Shoxfordian · 23/10/2023 09:06

Usually 2-3 a week; I don’t finish books I don’t like though unless it’s for book club - last one I read was called The Prey by Yrsa Sigurdardottir - quite a spooky story if you like that kind of thing at this time of year

Vitriolinsanity · 23/10/2023 09:09

Easily one a week. One a day on holiday. Thank God for Kindle!

There was a time about 3 years ago when a life changing event happened. The reason I knew I was in serious trouble as a consequence was when I realised I hadn't read a book for 3 months.

I came home from school on my first day in Reception and cried because I couldn't read.

Ponderence · 23/10/2023 09:21

Woweee. Been reading current book for about 6 weeks but I’ve not been gripped. When I have a good one it’ll take about a week. I spend a looot of time intending to read but going on my phone thoigh unless I’m super gripped by my book x

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 23/10/2023 10:31

15-18 a month. Since Saturday morning I've read two books, one 500pp and one 600pp, though we are on holiday and some of that was on the journey.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 23/10/2023 10:33

One or two. It’s mostly at bedtime to help me wind down. I could read more but with work it’s less.

reabies · 23/10/2023 10:57

Never used to count but started the Goodreads Reading Challenge last year. Read 13 books before my baby was born in May then limped through 7 others the rest of the year, hitting 20 out of my target of 30. Was probably ambitious for the first year of my first child's life, and averages out to 1.6 books per month.

Set myself the target of 20 for this year and I'm already on 22, making it a monthly average of 2.2 books so far.

Really impressed with people getting through multiple books a week! I love reading but like others I'm guilty of doom scrolling or internet time wasting when I could be reading more.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2023 10:59

Only one or two now. Prior to kids, 5 or so each week, on train to/from work.
looking forward to doing that again when we “retire” (in brackets because I don’t do paid work now but don’t have time to read much)

Apossum · 23/10/2023 11:00

Just checked my kindle app, 72 this year so far, plus 4 or 5 actual books that I can recall. So that’s, what, roughly 8 a month.

Woahtherehoney · 23/10/2023 11:00

On average around 2-3 a week but depends how busy I am. Some weeks it can be more and others it’s only one a week.

It also depends on the length - I recently read a series and almost all the books were 500+ pages and some even more so I read a lot less than when I read some shorter books I can power through!

WhatWouldHopperDo · 23/10/2023 11:03

Average 3-4 a month. Depends on DHs work pattern. I read more when he is on nights as he's not here in the evening.

Not that he dictates whether I read - just that we are more likely to watch tv or do something together.

LemonLight · 23/10/2023 11:05

I love reading but it depends on if I'm really into a book - then I wont put it down and will finish it too quickly and it's over. But I struggle to find books that I'm really into either because the story is a bit naff or the writing is a bit naff. Then it takes me longer. So some months I'll read several books and other months I won't read any at all.

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 23/10/2023 11:06

8-10 per month usually

hwaclanhdead · 23/10/2023 13:26

Usually about one a week but at the moment I'm having a "dry spell" as I've got too much else going on.
It depends on the weather too as I love hiking and being outdoors so if it's gorgeous weather like it is at the moment where I live then I'm out on hikes a lot of the time and there's less time for reading.

Yeahas · 23/10/2023 13:29

Usually one a week.
