Or is DH being unreasonable?

I booked our cars in to be valeted by a mobile service based off a local Facebook recommendation. The chap asked for a £20 deposit for each car to book which I transferred. I've never been asked to do this before. DH reckons I've been scammed...

In person? Maybe

On the phone? no way

I wouldn't be transferring anything to anyone based on a face book recommendation

cellarst · 22/10/2023 19:14

Yeah not in person. I did a bank transfer to hold our booking....

I think you may have been scammed...hopefully not though. I wouldnt have transferred. Can you see if there's been any reviews or something?

INeedAnotherName · 22/10/2023 19:21

It depends on how much the valeting will be. £100 per car then its reasonable in case you are a time waster. £30 per car then no, probably a scam.

Do you have their phone number, full name or business address?

@PunjabiGirl His page had loads of positive reviews which is why I felt confident...

Ahh OK that might make it more legit :-)

I very much doubt you've been scammed - I am always being asked for deposits for services nowadays and even have to pay up front for a lot of services such as dog grooming, music lessons, tutoring.

Mouldyuck · 22/10/2023 20:04

On what you've said I wouldn't say it screams scam. Wait until the date of the valeting. If nothing happens then contact your bank to report the payment. More than likely you'll get your money back.

Try not to worry just yet 🙂

I’d ask for a deposit up front if I was a mobile car valeter.

imagine how many times you’ve trundled off somewhere and marked you diary full for an hour or two only for some utter bell to tell you ‘oh I forgot you were coming today etc’ or they just aren’t there etc.

my hairdresser takes a deposit to ensure folks turn up - why shouldn’t others?
