What’s the most ridiculous price that someone has offered you?

Currently selling a pushchair for £70. It was used for less than a year as I got pregnant again and had to purchase a double buggy, so it’s in great condition!

Guess how much someone offered to purchase it for? £15😂 like really? Come on now.

It just made me think, what’s the silliest price someone has offered to pay when you’ve tried to sell something?

Is anyone else :0 that some prams are £800! I thought our £200 travel system with Graco was a lot and it was amazing!!

MANY are unfortunately £1,600-£2,000 including those sold by Mamas and papas..

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 22/10/2023 23:46

It's interesting how many people want the best of both worlds: they expect the free, next-day, anywhere-in-the-country delivery that Amazon provides; but they also have no intention whatsoever of paying anything approaching new retail price (or often even anything).

I'm still chuckling at the idiotic CF upthread wanting somebody giving him something for free to 'sweeten the deal'!!

Georgeandzippyzoo · 22/10/2023 23:53

Selling a 3ds xl (immaculate, with box) with mario case and stylus, 5 games, 2 of which even 2nd hand were worth nearly £45. We had looked on CEX and worked near their price.
We were asking £100, but knew we might need to drop a bit. At least 3 people offered £50 , didn't we know that's all we'd get, the 3 games weren't worth much (true, but the other 2 were), its old electronics ...
One man kept harping on, I can come today, I'll take it off your hands....no thanks.
Sold it in 36hrs at full price and had another offer if it fell through.
It wasn't the actual offered that really nowhere me, but cheeky maybe. It was the attitude of the people that I found annoying.

Zooeyzo · 22/10/2023 23:57

You'll notice on reuse/ freebie facebook sites in naice areas there's always someone who's cousin works as a social worker who is looking after somebody who needs everything...they get very defensive and rude if anybody questions it. I offered clothes once and had 15 people message me saying they also need toys clothes.

AfterWeights · 23/10/2023 06:21

Respectfully , only on mumsnet people can afford to give away a £800 pram set for free after using it for 1-2yrs. (Maybe if you’ve used it for a couple of kids then that’s different as you definitely had plenty of use out of it).

See this is the mentality i find odd. If i can afford to buy it at all, that's not based on assuming everything will be sold on. What if it had broken? Everyone "can afford" to give anything they buy away - they parted with the cash when they bought it and there's no guarantee something will be in a saleable state after use.

What you mean is they'll be worse off if they don't sell everything.

These days i think too many people buy things they can't actually afford, on the basis most of it can be sold & some of the cost recouped. Its a dangerous game as the price you pay new is irrelevant to what others are willing to pay - a lot of things like furniture only go for a fraction of the cost second hand.Take bugaboos. In some areas they will sell on for a lot. Where I live, not so much - demand for second hand prams is poor. Someone who desperately needed to recoup 2-300 for their old pram would be fucked.

AfterWeights · 23/10/2023 06:28

I'm still chuckling at the idiotic CF upthread wanting somebody giving him something for freeto 'sweeten the deal'!!

There are things like pianos and heavy furniture where literally it will cost you to dispose of them, to have them taken away. I'd imagine these are the scenarios. I had to pay for 2 sofas to be taken away by the rubbish men - put them on local sites for free and got no interest at all. Second hand goods can be worth little even if you paid a lot for them, if no one wants it.

There's a lady where i live whos been trying to sell some designer kids clothes for well over a year. She's determined not to let anyone else have them cheaply - she's asking about 30% of the new price but no one wants them - in this area people give away good brand kids clothes like jojo for free, they don't want a second hand branded coat for £40.

AfterWeights · 23/10/2023 06:32

I've remembered one of the silliest messages i ever had.

When i gave away my pram, i had a local lady message me pissed off that i was giving it free because she was trying to sell a similar one for £200 and wasn't getting any interest and I had "undercut her"

Not my problem!

Aposterhasnoname · 23/10/2023 06:36

I once got offered a bottle of wine for two bikes that were less than three months old. I sold them for £400.

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 23/10/2023 06:42

I’ve noticed the opposite to be honest - I’ve noticed people putting absolutely absurd and greedy prices on items listed on vinted and FB marketplace.

sep135 · 23/10/2023 06:49

People give away tons of free stuff, you don't hear about it again and then the same post pops up a week later? Scamming sods

We have loads, ranging from cheeky to deluded. My favourite list of requests was (in one post):
TV (at least 60 inch, must be a smart tv)
Tv cabinet
Corner sofa
Fridge
Freezer
Microwave
Double bed
Bedside cabinet
Must deliver as don't drive (this is a frequent theme)

There's falling on hard times and your microwave breaks and there's the sheer brass neck of expecting others to kit out your entire property in one go.

LimePi · 23/10/2023 07:16

@JANEY205

Most travel systems (Bugaboo, Cybex, Uppababy, Yoyo, Silver Cross) are 800+, some are even £1800
but they last for multiple kids and are very good (very convenient features etc)

graco is good but cheap brand
Even Joei travel systems cost more than £200

Whattodowhen · 23/10/2023 07:32

I’ve had a few…

a travel system for free (pushchair, carry cot, car seat, isofix base), lad turned up and when I said I’d help him put it in the car looked at me gone out and said he was catching the bus, husband felt sorry for him so dropped it round to him the next day.

something for £20, lady on the way to collect said she needed to go to the bank and did I have £5 change, I said why it’s £20 and she sends me a screen shot of my item showing £15, checked my live listing, still says £20, looked closely and she’d blatantly amended the price on the picture! Said well I won’t accept less than £20 and she still came to collect. Obviously thinking I’d just say oh have it for less as you’re on the way!

few free adverts for baby stuff where the same couple collected, him in his brand new Mercedes!

plenty of cheeky low offers, and is this available and then no further contact. But then you do get the people who ask is it available, then say great I can collect tomorrow, come and collect and pay the price and no dramas!

JANEY205 · 22/10/2023 22:21

Is anyone else :0 that some prams are £800! I thought our £200 travel system with Graco was a lot and it was amazing!!

It’s quite the norm to be honest. Mine was £1600 I used it a handful of times then sold it when baby was 4months old (tbh only sold it for £400 as that’s what I’d pay for second hand). Then bought a yo-yo buggy for about £1000 with the bag, colour change etc. they do hold their value quite well and it’s been incredibly useful. I’d never by a travel system again

Whattodowhen · 23/10/2023 07:35

Oh and I sold a car on marketplace too, listed for £5,200, offered all sorts from £2000 to swap you for my (older worth less) BMW. Meet you in a car park etc. sold to a lovely girl for £5000.

sep135 · 23/10/2023 07:38

I said why it’s £20 and she sends me a screen shot of my item showing £15, checked my live listing, still says £20, looked closely and she’d blatantly amended the price on the picture!

That wins the CF award...

I had a piano listed on FB marketplace. Since when did it become such a scammers' paradise? It was relentless, probably a hundred messages over a couple of weeks. They pinch other people's photos for their profile so they look plausible. The courier coming with money, the exchange for other goods, constantly wanting various details. They're usually identifiable by their lack of negotiation but a couple got through the net before I realised.

Hibiscrubbed · 23/10/2023 07:57

There are some absolute pricks on this thread! 😂

No, the OP isn’t offended, or upset, she’s laughing the marketplace twats making insane ‘offers’. Something some posters have admitted doing.

Not everyone can afford to give their very expensive baby toot away…

“I bought a travel system from Rolls Royce for £46,000 and I just gave it away when I was done. The world was much nicer when we just passed things on. I’d much rather a new family have use of it than try to make some money on it, it’s so crass, so desperate.”

”Prams aren’t worth anything anyway, in the OP would have to pay me to take her pram away.”

notacooldad · 23/10/2023 10:21

The lowest I would have sold the buggy for would have been £55
What would you have done with buggy if it didn't sell for that.
I think we've discovered who offered 10p for a handbag....🙄

@DriftingDora What the hell? That’s uncalled for. It was a genuine question. I was wondering what would have happened if no offers came in. Would op have just left the buggy in the shed/ loft where ever indefinitely?
There is nothing in my post to suggest I would be cheeky.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 23/10/2023 11:04

Doris86 · 22/10/2023 22:58

Second hand furniture, even if unused, will only ever sell for a fraction of its retail price. £500 actually sounds like a pretty good offer, and you may well regret not taking it.

We all know second hand goods sell for a fraction of new.
There's middle ground of a listing price and an offer.
The offer needs to sound good to the seller, no one else.
I've been selling on eBay and Gumtree for years, I know a cheeky offer when I see one.
No I won't regret not accepting an offer I seem unacceptable.
Like other posters, I've taken money off for genuine buyers at pick up just for not being c.f's.
I've also given away stuff I didn't feel had resale value.
Maybe she'll regret not buying it for a fair price.

honestlyseriously · 23/10/2023 12:18

I just don't reply to the cheeky fuckers.

LawfulSearch · 23/10/2023 18:53

I was giving away some new shoes and was asked to deliver them for a 20 mile round trip. Um. No.

Zerosleep · 23/10/2023 18:57

Totally agree with you OP, £15 is a ridiculous offer.

FreddieMercurysCat · 23/10/2023 19:14

I was selling my car for £3k ovno. Got offered £500. Was told by this knobhead man that it wasn’t worth the asking, but it was perfect for his wife and she needed it. Politely declined. Was bombarded with increasingly shitty messages through the day from him saying I was a selfish c**t. Told him to fuck off and blocked him. Got £2,750 the day after from a lovely Romanian chap.

Justontherightsideofnormal · 23/10/2023 19:22

Not quite the same but I was giving a pair of school shoes away. I had a message from some one who wanted them. She then asked if I could deliver to a town 25 minutes away 😂 erm no

I sold my buggy this evening and I’m a very happy woman😆 I was missing one of the things mentioned in the advert so I sold the buggy for £50 instead of £60. Still really satisfied!
