What’s the most ridiculous price that someone has offered you?

Currently selling a pushchair for £70. It was used for less than a year as I got pregnant again and had to purchase a double buggy, so it’s in great condition!

Guess how much someone offered to purchase it for? £15😂 like really? Come on now.

It just made me think, what’s the silliest price someone has offered to pay when you’ve tried to sell something?

Sometimes op, I wonder if replies are from actual people.

They've got a neck I'll give them that.

I spent many a night in Streatham at the ice rink. I grew up in Catford.

Some odd comments on here

if you advertise something for £70, I’d expect £70! I wouldn’t be open to offers unless I stipulate on the advert “open to offers”. Someone may not be able to afford the asking price in which case they offer another seller for an item within price range

second hand or new a price is a price! £15 for £70 item is ridiculous

JANEY205 · 22/10/2023 22:41

For the person who asked when or how I got a buggy for less than £600-£800 and just incase anyone else is looking!! (Ignore the dollars as I am in the US on a trip right now, but this is the exact system we had for our first and love it!!). I did not recall stuff being so expensive in the UK but maybe it’s sky rocketed in the 3 years from when I last had a baby :0 I am shocked at the $800 price!!

I do get annoyed if someone offers less than asking price tho as I feel I always price fairly!! Will always be cheeky gits around.

CherryBlossom321 · 22/10/2023 22:45

A few years ago we were asking £135,000 for a property in excellent condition. Offered £95,000 by a man who, once told he would need to increase his offer substantially to be taken seriously went on to offer £100,000 😂

We got £130,000 in the end from a sensible buyer.

surreygirl1987 · 22/10/2023 22:46

@surreygirl1987 please show me where I stated I was upset and offended at the offer? I simply gave context to explain what started the thread of wanting to hear from other people who received rubbish offers for items they were selling. Where in the post does it indicate that I’m upset and offended as you put it?

Erm... the fact that you felt the need to make a thread about it at all? 😂 Who would do that if you didn't feel so strongly about it?! It clearly bothered you a great deal.

Iris2019 · 22/10/2023 22:49

I was once selling some football bibs for not much, probably £10 for 15 or so. I had a guy saying he wanted them for free, and asking that I put them in the post first class since he needed them urgently for a game. The audacity

WillowCraft · 22/10/2023 22:53

Surely you will still need a single buggy though? What about when your older child can walk, in a year or so, or if one is in nursery so you just have the one, or if walking one round trying to get them to sleep etc?

Had a gap of under 2 years between my two, we only used the double for a year as the older one walked/scooted/balance biked everywhere by the age of 2.5. Now older one is in school but I still use the single buggy occasionally for the younger one.

In terms of offers, my worst experience was putting something on too cheap - one of those plastic 8 panel playpens, it had some cracks so put it on for a tenner thinking it might be useful for dogs. Instantly inundated with messages from places up to 3 hours drive away. Took it down and it stayed in the garden for a year - it went to the tip in the end

When I was clearing out my DF's flat after he died. I'd listed a sideboard, someone offered £100 less. Fair enough, I needed to get rid of it. She sent her H round who talked it down another £100. It was clear that I was selling items from someone who had died. I was so upset. I wish I'd told him to shove it.

I loved that ice rink. Shame they closed it down. I know there’s a new leisure centre with an ice rink but it isn’t the same

or just thought it interesting to know what other people's experiences were? People don't have to be upset or offended, they could be amused or curious

HopAPot · 22/10/2023 22:57

Nothing wrong with a cheeky bid, you don’t know their circumstances and they don’t know yours. All you have to do is say yes or no.

Sigh. The offer of £15 just made me wonder what other silly offers other people have been given when trying to sell something. I’m not upset, offended or bothered yet you struggle to realise that there doesn’t need to be a connection in order to start a thread on a discussion forum.

Have a great night

I'm selling a French bedroom company bed atm. Brand new as won't fit properly, never been used. Retails for 1400, got offered 500. No thanks.

Second hand furniture, even if unused, will only ever sell for a fraction of its retail price. £500 actually sounds like a pretty good offer, and you may well regret not taking it.

🤣 asking you to send it in the post via first class is absolutely shocking. I wonder how people can have such little shame. I’d be so embarrassed to ask that!

The advertised price is meaningless. An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Where i live people put things on buy sell pages with deluded asking prices! £10 for a pair of battered looking school shoes "with plenty of wear left". £50 for junky plastic kids toys with pieces missing. £3-4 each for toddler board books.

I gave away a pram system i paid £800 new for free, I'm not the only one to do this, some people don't mind the money they get they just want to pass something on and have it re-used.

Respectfully , only on mumsnet people can afford to give away a £800 pram set for free after using it for 1-2yrs. (Maybe if you’ve used it for a couple of kids then that’s different as you definitely had plenty of use out of it).

Also people forget that there’s plenty of fish at the market, so one doesn’t have to take the first offer…

The kids have an age gap of 11 months and the double buggy can still revert into a single one. I often push DS (18m) in the buggy whilst DD (2) walks beside me to nursery. It’s a great buggy

My daughter was selling her pram buggy system, cost 1300 new. Only used for a year and my daughter is spotless, everything immaculate...no food residue or stains. She advertised it for £150...to put towards a new buggy... someone messaged her offering her 50 lol. She said 150.. they said 55 ... wouldn't leave her alone all day...has it got this has it got that...it already said everything on listing.....was as if they were doing her a favour 😑!. They said, we cant come until tomorrow as my husband is closing our shop early to come with me...i mean!!! Lol. DD said dont close the shop on my behalf ..they said ok ok 60 lol ....she said no can do..anyway ive now given it away for free to a single parent family whos struggling financially and asking no questions and is very grateful. Good luck on finding a system for 60.

Loubelle70 · 22/10/2023 23:10

Btw she did donate it to a single parent mum

moana1234 · 22/10/2023 23:14

advertised a moses basket on fb marketplace for £15, after no successful sale after a week i advertised it for free to the first to collect...a few days after i saw the person who had collected it had re listed it for £20. Bloody cheek!

cariaaad · 22/10/2023 23:19

I once listed a punch bag on gumtree, something my husband had bought and (not surprisingly) had never used. Brand new, asking £50 which was half the price he paid
A woman offered £10, I ignored.
Sold to a lovely man who paid the £50. I even met him half way to drop off as he was polite and it wasn't much bother.
Removed item from gumtree.
She then repeatedly messaged to say how dare I sell the item as she'd really wanted it. Clearly not enough to make a decent offer!

Messyhair321 · 22/10/2023 23:24

I was giving away a child's dressing table online. I had this woman ranting about her being more in need than the other person I'd already given it to. Might have been the case but felt so rude her messaging me with that

GrimGrinningGhosts · 22/10/2023 23:25

£5k car, which I’d priced to sell. Woman thought £2k was a really good offer, she was doing me a favour and obviously she needed a fund to pay for petrol and any future repairs etc. I laughed. She genuinely thought it was reasonable for me to fund her car. I said something like ‘I’m sorry you can’t afford to buy it, good luck in your search’ 😂

Young lad travelled half way across the country for it the following day. He was setting up a business and it was prefect for towing. He was a lovely lad, no messing, no haggling. Knocked him a bit more off anyway and wished him well in his venture.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 22/10/2023 23:43

Professional resellers do. They offer lots of people low prices for their goods. Some bite. They resell for a profit.

But there's fair profit and there's phenomenally excessive profit. I've no issue if they identify themselves as resellers and maybe offer enough less to leave themselves a profit margin - but the ones begging for it free or for tuppence with a completely fabricated sob story are shameless.

That said, I always remember a friend from years ago who part-exchanged his car with a dealer - went to the dealer's retail premises - getting £3K for it, and then bitterly complained when he saw it for sale at the same yard for £4K the next day. I didn't think the dealer had done anything wrong there whatsoever.

Well done you, I'd have done exactly the same! The sheer idiocy of some people who expect things to cost what they can afford/want to pay for them, rather than their actual price. If she desperately needed a car, it's not like there aren't plenty of (older and higher mileage) cars available for much nearer £2K - she absolutely didn't need a £5K one.
