To leave leaf pile

We live on a small village green and the guy who owns it (two doors down) is horrible. There's a massive oak tree in the middle of the green which is currently dropping all its leaves. There is a gravel track across the green from the road to our drive, owned by the guy who owns the green, but my semi-detached neighbour and I have access rights. I've just swept up all the leaves on my drive and my semi-detached neighbours (they are elderly and have mobility issues so I do it as favour for them) and put all those leaves in my green bin which is now full. I've then swept all the leaves on the access drive into a pile just to the side of the gravel track and left them on the green. I've moved them as they are slippery and get stuck in my pram wheels and the elderly couple are unsteady on their feet so I feel it's a legitimate safety concern.

I'm worried the green owner will kick off as he's very aggressive to everyone in the village but I've only moved the leaves from one part of his land to another to make my access safer. It may also look to him like I've dumped all the leaves that blew onto my land back on to his green (which is not true but I can see it could look like that). I'm considering going out and bagging them all up just to avoid any conflict but at the same time I think why should I, they are his leaves on his land and I shouldn't be scared of him just because he's a bully.

AIBU - I should bag all the leaves

AINBU - it's ok to leave them

Leave them, the winter winds will soon move them again. If he rages tell him you left them for environmental reasons. Beetles and other insects will overwinter in the pile and will be a feast for wandering hedgehogs (plus a hibernation retreat) and they will be enjoyed by the birds too. If he still complains tell him you'll send David Attenborough or Chris Packham after him...

EDIT - Forgot the worms! The worms will pull the leaves into the soil which enriches it...plus extra worms for the birds. Or just deny all knowledge 😉

Would it be possible to talk to him?

Doing stuff without consultstion is a sure fire way of annoying someone.

I don't think I'd leave them. It might look like you've just dumped them.

I think fallen leaves are a really good source of compost (leaf mould?) so if you have any space I think it’s good to bag them up into string bags or make a chicken wire enclosure or something and let them rot down.

Hopefully someone who knows more than me about gardening can fill in the details.

Assuming you want compost that is. Otherwise just leave them on his green. They belong to him. They’re his mess.
