Whats everyone's experience when breastfeeding their second baba?

Did they latch okay? I know I've read its best to latch in the golden hour. With my son didn't get chance but its wasn't too long after that when I could try and despite having tongue tie he could still feed thank fully. But it caused me so much pain but wouldn't have it any other way.

Just want to see how successful it is with your second. I know I won't know till she's here. And I know there's no guarantee she will but definitely going to try and if can't will pump. And will attempt again later on.

Tia 😊

Much easier with second based on research rather than the prenatal classes saying breast is best and it'll only hurt or be difficult if you do it wrong. First baby it hirt a lot, she lost so much weight they said we either readmit or formula and I chose formula- tongue tie spotted by a friend gp at 4 months , second (8 years later) I really had to heal wounds and baby 2 was in nicu, IUGR and I had to triple feed for 6 months but I had the knowledge and support. I'd never say ebf is the only option but if it's important to you it is an option! (And for the people who have problems, the system failed you, you didn't do anything wrong )

So sorry you had a hard time. You did your best! Glad you had the support and did well. Exactly. Needs to be more support. X

Born knowing what to do!

DC1 didn't get the hang of breastfeeding, DC2 seemed to take to it straight away!

lawrain · 22/10/2023 22:51

Both dcs latched very easily, they just knew what to do and it wasn't painful for me. I didn't do much to learn about how to do it or need a consultant, just watched a few YouTube videos. Breastfed DC1 until 3.5 yrs and DC2 us 18m and is still breastfeeding. Had c-sections for both and had skin to skin and attempted to feed immediately after birth. Age gap of nearly 4 years so had DC1 in nursery when establishing feeding with DC2, and we could do the whole fourth trimester properly.

Hankunamatata · 22/10/2023 22:53

None of mine latched well to start. Gave up with dc1 at 6 weeks with the others I persevered to 6 months then combine fed. They were all super sleepy feeders and had to be fed naked and then popped on a changing mat to wake up to get a feed finished in early days.

DoAhhDiddy · 22/10/2023 22:56

DS 2 latched straight away and suckled for 2 hours straight! Fantastic feeder. Very efficient (first baby was much more hard work!). Beautiful experience. Wish I could go back and do it all over again with him 💕

Dc was really hard. Thought he was feeding OK, but he didn't gain weight, feeds would be over 1 hour and he'd feed all the time. I ended up with mastitis as he wasn't draining my milk. I remember the midwife asking about when he was next due a feed, and I couldn't answer as he would just feed constantly (no wonder as he wasn't actually getting milk, he must have been starving 😞). Turned out a tongue tie had been missed which we had cut at 5 weeks, but I'd had to start combination feeding by then and never got back to exclusive breast feeding. Hated the pump, could never express more than a few drops, and cycle of brest/ bottle/ pump took forever and was so stressful.

Dc2 was checked for tongue tie at 3 days old (despite having been checked at the hospital), snipped same day, then breast fed like a dream. 98th centile weight. I was amazed how easy it was! He never took a bottle (and I couldn't even try pumping as it brought horrible memories back), and carried on breast feeding til 4.

Anecdotally, second children seem to fare much better (and maybe experienced boobs make more milk??) Good luck!
