Whats everyone's experience when breastfeeding their second baba?

Did they latch okay? I know I've read its best to latch in the golden hour. With my son didn't get chance but its wasn't too long after that when I could try and despite having tongue tie he could still feed thank fully. But it caused me so much pain but wouldn't have it any other way.

Just want to see how successful it is with your second. I know I won't know till she's here. And I know there's no guarantee she will but definitely going to try and if can't will pump. And will attempt again later on.

Tia 😊

I breastfed my first for 18 months and stopped when I was about 4 months pregnant with my second. Both of mine were born by EMCS. With my first child it was painful for the first couple of weeks. Second time round I knew what I was doing and had no pain at all, my second was actually tongue tied but it didn't affect feeding as the latch was still good. My milk also came in very quickly with my second.

I fed my first for 15 months. It hurt like hell for the first 6 weeks, and after that it went quite smoothly (barring the odd clogged duct). When I went back to work I pumped.

My second is now 9 months old and it has been easy from the start. No pain, nothing. Only problem is she won't take a bottle.

Glad it eventually went smoothly for you. Aww I'm pleased it went smoother with the second x

Dd1 didn't latch straight away. Took about 2 days and stopped when she was 6 months
Dd2 latched straight away and didn't stop till she was 3
Ds latched straight away and stopped arlt 10 months.

Currently pregnant with 4th and won't be breastfeeding this time round

useitorlose · 22/10/2023 17:50

With DD1, I just had to give up. All the pumping and stress wasn't worth it, she wasn't gaining enough and we just never got the hang of it. By 4 weeks old she was exclusively bottle fed.

DD2 was 2 years later - she took to it like she was born to do it! I fed until 8 months, when I was ready to stop. No problems at all.

I felt it was harder to feel like I had the hang of it with DC2, midwives and HV kept saying it looked fine but it took me weeks to feel that I was doing it "right" - it was just that he was very different from my first - 10 mins and done. A very efficient feeder! Never fed longer than 10 mins.

I bf for longer with him though - 2.5 years exactly.

Had a hellish experience with dc1, including a nursing strike at 8 weeks, I ended up pumping for them until 6 months where I had enough and moved to formula.

Dc2 basically just ejected from the vag to the boob and stayed there for 4 years. Had tongue tie but didn't bother his latch, he's been an expert feeder since 30 secs old.

Sorry you struggled with your first but you should be proud! Glad things went well with your second 😊 x

My second fed absolutely fine from the get go. I don't think he latched on within the first hour, I just sort of let him do it when he was ready. I also gave him a bottle of formula very very early on as I wanted him to combi feed. Again that was fine and caused no issues. So definitely more straight forward compared to my first baby

LightSpeeds · 22/10/2023 21:26

So much easier with the second baby as I had some experience by then and the difficulty of the whole breastfeeding thing didn't come as a shock!

MountainLion · 22/10/2023 21:37

Can't remember the exact details as a decade ago but DC2 latched on, fed and then just kept feeding! He didn't lose any weight after birth, the midwives were very surprised.

What I think was different, apart from me being more confident, was that the birth was unassisted whereas DC1 was failed ventouse and forceps. I know now that can really affect babies breastfeeding due to pain (as can certain drugs and c-sections).

I attribute that to being kept on my back for monitoring whereas with DC2 I stood up and lent over the bed (midwife was happy for me to do so).

Cotswoldmama · 22/10/2023 21:39

Mine latched on within about half an hour of being born. He fed about every 2-3 hours and my milk came in the next day! I breast fed until he was 3. It was amazing but I think it's just one of those things that either goes well or doesn't. My first was premmie so it was a struggle so I kind of decided in my head I'd give it a go for at least 2 weeks and if it was too hard I'd bottle feed although I was very keen to breastfeed. I feel like we were just lucky.

Scottishskifun · 22/10/2023 21:39

I would say if you can master feeding in a sling/carrier from early stages then it's a game changer! I would be in a playpark helping DS1 on stuff all while DS2 was on boob and nobody was the wiser would pop him on but the cover up and still be sorting out a 3 year old!

Aww that's brilliant 👏 I had to have forceps with my son as he was in an awkward position. Thank you for your experience x

I'm definitely going to use a sling this time. Didn't with my son. X

My second ended up in NICU for four days. She still managed to latch on and didn't let go for a year!
