Whats everyone's experience when breastfeeding their second baba?

Did they latch okay? I know I've read its best to latch in the golden hour. With my son didn't get chance but its wasn't too long after that when I could try and despite having tongue tie he could still feed thank fully. But it caused me so much pain but wouldn't have it any other way.

Just want to see how successful it is with your second. I know I won't know till she's here. And I know there's no guarantee she will but definitely going to try and if can't will pump. And will attempt again later on.

Tia 😊

I found it much easier second time and was more determined. I didn't stress about it and it helped that she didn't have tongue tie.
I was also kinder to myself and if second born needed some formula to top up, I didn't beat myself up about it.
Good luck to you 😊

Thank you 😊. I'm definitely more determined. And will make sure not to stress. I did use some formula in the beginning with my son as well as breastfeed. Want to go without it this time. Fingers crossed she won't have tongue tie x

Thank you for all the comments so far 😊 much appreciated ❤️

Glad there's no negativity unlike my other thread about pumping. I know its never wise to post on AIBU. But wanted to get the most comments. And this one always gets them. X

Both of mine latched within a couple of minutes of birth. I was lucky - they seemed to know what to do.

LoveTheDetectorists · 22/10/2023 15:36

Second baby was actually second and third as I had twins.
The first baby breastfed was a breeze. Absolutely no problems

2 & 3 was harder work and I lacked any kind of positive support from the midwives who said it was pointless trying with 2!!!!!

Nevertheless all was fine.
Fully breasfedv( although hospital did giv one of mine a bottle when he was in the special care unit, whilst giving my milk that I’d pumped for him to other kids 🤯)
I Followed Gina Ford routine for increasing supply and her routines.

I didn’t get out much at the beginning. But I’m happy to let life be on hold

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/10/2023 15:52

First two were twins, early, very sleepy. I breastfed them easily till about 4 months when I stopped, I couldn't tandem feed when out and about and if I didn't, they got very upset! My milk didn't come in for about a week though when they were born and that was really stressful.

DS3, latched on pretty much the second he was born, didn't lose any birthweight (!) the little piggy! He was a dream to feed, fed till 14 months when I weaned him completely as I was exhausted from it.

Never had any out of the ordinary pain, some from let down, some from engorgement (being stuck in traffic on my own!) and the occasional bite! But otherwise I found it completely and instinctively easy, although as I think of it my twins were slow to latch and so sleepy.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/10/2023 15:55

Oh forgot - I did pump with the twins so DH could help with night feeds. And then we transitioned to formula at the 4 month mark, although they were having some top ups with formula I think.

Geranium1984 · 22/10/2023 15:57

DS1 latched fine, apart from being very sleepy the first couple of days he took to BF with no issues, never took a bottle but transitioned onto cows milk at 12mo with no drama. Enter DD2 ... difficult is her middle name. From day 1 BF was very painful, had a couple of tounge tie assessments and no issues so had to work on her latch. She had awful colic and reflux. She is 11mo and still has reflux, literally threw up an hour ago after I'd had some cream cheese. Looks like we still need to be dairy free 🫣 I'm hoping to get her onto oat milk in the next 3 weeks before she starts nursery but she still has 4 big feeds a day, is not very interested in solid food.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 22/10/2023 16:17

DS1, difficult start but no problem in the end. DS2 no issues at all, very easy to feed.

Xmasbabyxmas · 22/10/2023 16:17

Elective c section 39weeks. Latched on within first 15 mins, job done. Easy. I've been lucky with both not to have any issues (conceiving and giving birth is another story though, haha!). The main difference I noticed is that my body seemed to "remember" what to do and my supply went a bit mad. Had a blocked duct around day 10 which hurt a lot. Managed to sort with warm compress, expressing and feeding though. Nipples sore in early days so plenty of lansinoh. Good luck x

Scottishskifun · 22/10/2023 16:24

Like chalk and cheese DS1 had a tongue tie and was in neonatal unit for a week delayed milk etc then tongue tie reattachment at 4 months.
DS2 didn't have a tongue tie (I stopped taking folic acid after 14 weeks or any pregnancy vitamin with it in and did it separately instead) latched straight away and was gaining weight from the start. I did need some help getting him latched at first (he was pretty sleepy at first) but midwife was fab and after bf DS1 I didn't care who saw my nips 😂

I did harvest colostrum from 37 weeks with DS2 (had gestational diabetes with DS2) and wished I had done it with DS1.
DS2 still feeding at 20 months but only a few times a day.

Pradder · 22/10/2023 16:29

Baby 2 was a fabulous feeder, her latch when she was 10 minutes old was better than my first managed in 3 years of feeding. Thrived too, nice and easy all round.
Good luck!

Notmytotoro · 22/10/2023 16:41

all my children have been breastfed since they were born. did you had a midwife at the hospital or a health visitor at home? They can help you with breastfeeding if you are struggling.

DD was trickier to start with as I had EMCS under GA and we were both battered and exhausted but I fed her till she was 3.5 and I was pregnant with DS. Never had any pain or other issues though.

DS was ELCS and I’d been expressing colostrum in case it was a complicated delivery and I couldn’t feed him. It was but my end not his and I fed him in theatre while they were putting me back together.

He’s been a champion feeder from then on, feeds much more efficiently than DD, which I’ve heard is common with most of my friends who’ve bf 2. Barely any cluster feeding, just on, chugs, off again.

Bf has made having quality time with DD easier than I’d expected. I can do it with one hand or hands free depending on positioning and it never gets in the way or giving her my attention.

I fed my first for 15 months. It hurt like hell for the first 6 weeks, and after that it went quite smoothly (barring the odd clogged duct). When I went back to work I pumped.

My second is now 9 months old and it has been easy from the start. No pain, nothing. Only problem is she won't take a bottle.
