Why are cats allowed to be a pain in the arse??

sofaprincess · 22/10/2023 11:15

We recently moved into a new house and we have a dog. She is quite a large dog and I have spent a huge amount of time training her and trying to ensure she is well behaved out of the house and friendly or indifferent (depending on the situation) with other people and dogs. I am always conscious that people might not like dogs and we steer clear of people in the street and always clear up her mess. She loves spending time in the garden and that is supposed to be her safe space.

My issue is this - my husband is picking cat poo up regularly from our front garden and has identified the culprit, but really what can we do (rhetorical)? But worse than that, a different cat likes to come and sunbathe in my garden (on the shed roof or other high up places) which causes my dog to bark continuously until I go out and lure her back inside. I’m starting to feel a bit fed up with nuisance cats - we should be able to enjoy our outside space without dealing with bloody cat issues……right?

YANBU - cats are are pain in the arse and they should be regulated in the same way as dogs are (ie owners need to ensure they have them under control)

YABU - cats will be cats and they should be allowed to free roam and sunbathe/shit where they like

What will you do when it's a fox sunbathing in the same spot, OP?

They usually have an arrangement with the cats to take turns when the cat doesn't want it (and sometimes cats graciously agree to share the shed when warm sunshine is at a premium). Once you've got the joys of clearing fox faeces from the grass or off the dog where it's rolled in them ecstatically, you'll be wishing the cat came back.

Probably the same thing we do, scare it away that applies to foxes and cats as they are both annoying, fox pooh is horrible I agree but that doesn't make cat pooh less horrible

Did you actually read their comment on my original post?

@Americano75 I'm waiting for my suspicions to be definite and then I will do. He sickened me last time she had a litter - crowing about how much money he got for each kitten when they had no idea which neighborhood tom had fathered them and when he'd been given his cat originally by someone else trying to offload a surprise litter 😡

Nope, cats are out overlords, deal with it!

Not seeing the appeal.

What a bastard. Absolute piece of shit.

You can’t really train a cat!! Although if you figure it out please do let me know! My cat is an asshole.

my cat will sit on the wall and wind up next doors sausage dog, I’ve told my neighbour to shoot her with the hose and to not feel guilty about it.
neighbour was reluctant at first but it’s working slowly. My cat is becoming less inclined to walk that side of the wall when the dog is out.

StaunchMomma · 22/10/2023 14:37

Just buy something to put in the garden that puts off cats.

The poor sod has probably been sleeping on the shed for years.

You're being really dramatic.

StaunchMomma · 22/10/2023 14:38

Pissing myself at the 'cats should be regulated' thing - get one and see how you get on! 😂

QueenCamilla · 22/10/2023 14:42

With the over-population of cats in tight residential areas - not a natural environment at all for the poor things - I also feel that we are only binding time until a disease sweeps the population and wipes out a good proportion of outdoor cats. That's the nature's way.
And it can't come soon enough - Not because I wish death on the innocent animals but a swift change in the habits of the selfish owners.

Haven't read your post but the answer to your question is, because they're bloody adorable. Hth

What a charming tone you have.

Why not keep the yapping dog indoors?

The dog is on it's own property. The cat is not.

That's the point half of us are trying to make WE DON'T WANT ONE

It already happens all over the world - why do you think it's impossible in the UK?

LeonBlack · 22/10/2023 14:44

You need to train you dog to stop barking at sunbathing cat.

TomatoSandwiches · 22/10/2023 14:44

I can understand your frustration however YABU.
I say this as a cat owner who made the choice to raise them as inside cats because we live near a conservation area so we have a catio as a compromise.

Warum · 22/10/2023 11:16

Let your dog in her own garden, if she barks then people will soon realise what she's barking at - the cat doesn't trump your dog and it needs to learn that this is your dogs territory!

This. It drives me insane that my dog has died, but I still have to buy poo bags due to cat poo on my front and side garden. Horrible. They don't do it in my back garden thankfully. I'm an animal lover but cats get my back up big style. I couldn't see one harmed, or upset, but I like them about as much as I like wasps. Not much. Touch wood, they aren't spraying round the front door anymore - I had to go out with bleach on a morning, or the whole downstairs stunk. And, I've been bitten by 2 cats at work.Theyust know I'm not keen 😂 Rant over.

Cats are just better than people. People destroy the whole planet and no one regulates us.

Is this serious?.
Cats are predators their nature is to kill.
They are certainly not better than people. Can cats display selfless acts of kindness? Care for each other? Love someone so much they are prepared to die die them? Produce great works of art, literature, beauty? develop life saving drugs and vaccines?, perform life saving operations? Etc
I understand some people love their pets but they are not better than humans.

Americano75 · 22/10/2023 14:52

Cats might not be better than humans in general, but they're a damn sight better than some of the charmers on here.

The real issue is that dogs are stupid!

Police dogs
Sniffer dogs
Search and rescue dogs
Mountain rescue dogs
Armed forces dogs that find bombs
Guide dogs for the blind
Hearing dogs for the deaf
Assistance and emotional support dogs

And cats can't even learn to shit in a tray Grin

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/10/2023 14:57

You need one of those mega powerful water pistols, OP.

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 22/10/2023 14:32

Zero bias towards cats or dogs. Not bias towards owning or not owning a pet. I was talking about the cats vs dogs argument that has developed on the thread. So wind your neck in.

The cats v dogs argument is irreleavnt to the thread. The OP asks if cats should be regulated. Whether they are better or worse than dogs has no bearing on the discussion.

A strong mix of jeans fluid poured around areas you don't want cats to come does discourage them. We pour it all around our fences every 4 months and it keeps them at bay.

You need about 24 hours of no rain and, obviously, keep children and pets away for 1st 6 to 8 hours while it dries

I'm afraid that's simply not for you to decide. That is the direction the conversation was heading, and I was replying to a comment about "cats vs dogs" (for want of a better description...) so it really is not for you to say what has bearing on this discussion! You being pedantic on a phrase I used in my reply, however, is completely irrelevant. OK, so you pointed out I do have bias towards owning pets. I also have bias towards many other things, just as any human on the planet does. However I wasn't discussing those biases, just as I wasn't discussing my bias towards having a pet (or 3).
