To let bad WiFi get me down?

It’s been like it on and off ever since I moved to my new house 5 years ago. Since the start of August we’ve had an another shit WiFi spell and I am so fed up of every time I want to go on the internet it buffers!! It’s driving me mad and getting me down; I feel so restricted. I can’t scroll on my social media, every time I want to quickly google something I just think “is it worth the bother”. I even typed this out this morning on notes to wait for some service or WiFi to post it! So fed up!!

YANBU but is it insoluble?

Lonesomefetter · 20/10/2023 17:12

Is there no other provider? My internet was a bit shit during first lockdown, obviously overburdened with everyone at home, annoying as shit.

Is it the WiFi or the internet connection? If it's the WiFi just get a better router or look at using mesh or a further access point. If it's the internet change providers.

There are lots of possible solutions - wifi comes with an awful lot of caveats.

One bit that a lot of folk don't consider is that 5GHz was only a good solution while most people were on 2.4GHz so it was less congested. In actuality, 2.4GHz is far more effective through walls and other obstructions.

One easy solution is to get some HomePlug units - plug one into your router, and get another with a wifi access point built in to put somewhere central in your house (or in the room with the worst coverage), then connect to that instead.

Of course, that assumes that your problem is the wifi, and not your broadband connection.

I'm really passed off with mine at the moment too!
2 of us worked from home without a glitch for the whole pandemicI could access the Wi-Fi from the end of the garden! Told everyone how awesome they had been!

2 years later, same provider I struggle to log on in the kitchen! It's infuriating!

DrFoxtrot · 20/10/2023 18:20

I'm having Wi-Fi issues - I just thought it was my laptop and occasionally my phone. Only realised today when I used my laptop at someone else's house and it was lightning quick!

Nobody can tell if you're being unreasonable unless you let us know what you've done to try to fix it.

Chickenpoxhelp · 20/10/2023 19:18

You need to work through the reasons.

do you live in the middle of nowhere so only getting 1mgps broadband?

is it a rubbish wifi router?

Pix56 · 20/10/2023 19:23

Just get a new router.

HunterBidensBurnerPhone · 20/10/2023 19:40

Is it Virgin? The service has been absolute garbage round here since the summer.

Tequilamockinbird · 20/10/2023 19:43

Who's your provider? And is it the wi-fi that's crap or your actual broadband connection ?

INeedAnotherName · 20/10/2023 19:45

Is your router hidden in a corner in a different room? Try a plug in WiFi booster (argos sell them).

Have you done a speed test at all and compared it to what your account says it should be?

I feel your pain. I live on an island and we’re completely at the mercy of the weather, the number of visitors - it crashes EVERY bank holiday - and the time of day. I’ve tried every provider but essentially we have a certain amount of bandwidth to go around. It is pretty frustrating when we have to pay regardless …

GOODCAT · 08/04/2024 20:15

We got ultra fast broadband, all great. However then had mobile switched to vpn and it was unbearably slow. Switched it off and brilliantly quick again.

I don't have good understanding of this but it seems to be the most minor thing can really slow it down.
