Products that need a rehaul of their packaging, to make them easier to use?

Metanium. A thick yellow cream for baby's bum. I have been using a little for menopausal itches. But the packaging is a disaster! A flimsy metallic tube that splits at the sides, so that you have cream coming out everywhere. I don't want to waste the cream, so have put the tube in a little plastic bag. It's still incredibly messy to use though. When this finishes, I'll go back to a sturdy tub of Sudocrem, which is frankly the superior product anyway.

Superglue (any brand of) - the glue dribbles out and the lid ends up being stuck on. Again, messy and wasteful to use. And because I'm dyspraxic, I've stuck my fingers together more than once BlushBlushBlush

Is it just me?

Water in a can 😕 so I can't buy one, take a few sips and put it into my bag for later, I have to drink it all in one go or be left carrying a bloody can about

If only there were bottles.....
I didn't know you could get it in a can

BodegaSushi · 19/10/2023 14:34

These bastard cups. Have never been able to wrench open one without losing fingernails and half the contents of the thing.

Put a corned beef tin in the fridge for an hour or two before opening as it seems to shrink it away from the edge of the tin a little and make the beef more solid, and so it's easier to stab it with a knife and lever it out! 🤕

Or give the jar a sharp tap on a hard surface, it breaks the seal.
I agree with this for getting jar lids off

Yes, if only the establishment where I’m purchasing from sold them in bottles…

lately being a few museum cafes and a park cafe.

Child proof plastic tubs with liquid washing capsules in them are a nightmare to nightmare to open and close and some of the capsule tabs leak- I’ve gone back to washing powder.

Those are fucking awful, I concur.
I had to rip the lid off one in rage.

Cucumbers that are vacuum packed. I struggle to roll the plastic off them. Ehy do cucumbers need any packaging? You can easily wash it before you eat it.

In France in supermarkets most if not all fruit and veg is sold without packaging including cucumbers, why we can’t do this here I don’t know.

The upside down bottles of mayonnaise! It’s fine when it’s full but completely useless if you want to get the last remnants out!!

Classic!

Wet wipes that won't come out one at a time. So when you're using one hand to hold a shitty, flappy baby's ankles and the other hand to yank a wet wipe, you end up with half the packet.

I actually meant take your own

Several reasons:

  • I forget 💁🏽‍♀️
  • I make an unexpected trip while at work where I don’t have my water bottle to begin with (because I just use glass/tap water)
  • it’s common to buy drinks when out and water is one of them, and I don’t expect for it to only be sold in a can

Saw my friend use one of these last week - it's miraculous. https://www.lakeland.co.uk/7706/jarkey-screw-top-jar-opener

Cling film. I've tried expensive and cheap but can still never tear off more than a tiny bit, then I'm trying to find the end ( like sellotape).
Drives me nuts!

I get the perforated clingfilm from Lakeland, you get a sheet tof it to tear off and no more little shreddy bits. It's a lot more expensive but I've been using the same pack for two years now

enchantedsquirrelwood · 19/10/2023 15:30

This triggered me to launch into a tirade about how half of nearly everyone's adult life is spent presbyopic, but manufacturers still print important information in e.g. tiny misaligned pale blue text on slightly paler blue background. With yellow splodges

Not just packaging, but also magazines. I can read a newspaper and normal black on white just fine but why print eg orange on white? Or vice versa. Years ago I was reviewing some packaging copy as well and mentioned that the colours would make it difficult to read. The guy consulted with his boss who'd apparently had to get his glasses on, so agreed with me and they changed the colours. Surely this is a really basic thing? Many people have vision problems way before they get to their late 40s/early 50s when people tend to need glasses for normal middle aged longsightedness.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 19/10/2023 15:30

Oh and sanitary towels that always stick to the wrong thing when you take the tape off the sticky bit.

I was coming on to say Sunpat peanut butter, which is a stupidly shaped jar with a bulge at the bottom making it impossible to scrape all the peanut butter out.

If you've got dogs, they'll clean them out lovely for you. I save them as a high value shut-the-Fuck-up-for-half-hour treats.

No dogs or pet rats here unfortunately, just two cats who I don't think are keen on peanut butter!

ScottBakula · 19/10/2023 15:56

I agree with you @Caerulea I did this with my dog, he also loved marmite too.
Just be aware if any of you have dogs as daft as mine was, he use to throw it around to try to get more out. I wrapped the jar in a layer of bubble wrap , it also made it a bit easier to grip with his paws.

This is super niche, but I take a slow release OxyCodone every day. They are individually packaged, so like in a blister pack, but you have to tear one off the pack each time. Then, you can't pop it through the paper backing; you have to peel the foil/paper combo backing off. It's a nightmare, as the edges are all stuck down, and you can't even bite your way into it.
I mean, I know it's a controlled drug, and there's a safety issue, but for the love of Christ, I need to get into the fuckers.
(And breathe)

I take these too, but they're in a normal blister pack (from Switzerland). My prescription is in triplicate though! I'm not sure whether that makes the Brits or the Swiss less trustworthy with controlled meds? They have been repackaged twice in a few years, only to end up back nearly as they started, but in a larger box with more packaging. I am incensed by the waste of time and materials that went into this (and the fact that they were out of stock for 9 months due to the second redesign and I had to take the generic, which was a) less effective and b) impossible to wrestle from the blister pack!).

The attached drinks bottle lids are incensing me too because they are on litre and two-litre bottles of MILK!! The milk lives in the fridge and when I use it I put the lid back on. Then when it's finished I put the lid on for a final time and recycle the bottle and lid together. Thus the lid does not need to be attached! Am i missing something? Do people walk down the street swigging from two-litres of milk, carelessly casting the caps aside on kerb?

LeefsPrings · 19/10/2023 16:26

Bathroom toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, shower gel & body lotion bottles with the writing so small that you can't read it when you're in the shower without your glasses on. The Body Shop and others with a range of things in practically identical containers are the worst for this.

Bamaluz · 19/10/2023 16:31

Travel bathroom toiletries which also have tiny writing so it's doubly difficult to differentiate between them.
I once attempted to condition my hair with body wash on holiday, my hair was like straw.

Toothbrushes and pens that come in the same impenetrable packaging (cardboard back, plastic front).
Similarly, but to a lesser degree, ready made sandwich packets.

Hold the toothbrush in its package by the handle with the plastic facing you. 'Peel' or bend the packaging toward you like a banana peel. The head of the toothbrush acts as the device to push through the cardboard back.

BorisIsACuntWaffle · 19/10/2023 16:50

Yanbu ogx argan oil conditioner bottles are awful. Too wide can't get last bits out

Oh and those new Coca Cola-brand bottles where the lid stays attached to the bottle so your nose, chin or cheek gets squashed and scratched by the edges of the lid while you're trying to drink your Dr Pepper.
I mean if they actually cared about recycling, why didn't they just go with better-made reusable bottles (washable at high temperatures) and coin-operated post-mix refill stations?

"If they actually cared about recycling..."

I think you've answered your own question.

Love the reusable bottle idea though.

@JMSA bepanthen is way better than sudocremband it's a plastic tube so no splits
