Products that need a rehaul of their packaging, to make them easier to use?

Metanium. A thick yellow cream for baby's bum. I have been using a little for menopausal itches. But the packaging is a disaster! A flimsy metallic tube that splits at the sides, so that you have cream coming out everywhere. I don't want to waste the cream, so have put the tube in a little plastic bag. It's still incredibly messy to use though. When this finishes, I'll go back to a sturdy tub of Sudocrem, which is frankly the superior product anyway.

Superglue (any brand of) - the glue dribbles out and the lid ends up being stuck on. Again, messy and wasteful to use. And because I'm dyspraxic, I've stuck my fingers together more than once BlushBlushBlush

Is it just me?

Any drinks pouches or Cartons which have Environmental friendly paper straws. They are so flimsy they do not pierce a hole. I have to resort to using something sharp like a Pencil or Fork to create a hole and then insert the straw.
I work in a School and so have several Children asking me to do this at Lunchtimes.

So many children’s board games and puzzles that come in pretty boxes and then you can’t get the content back in!

Yes - and also Lego boxes. Lego is so well designed and lasts beautifully but the boxes don’t open in a sturdy way - one you open them they’re all squashy and weak.

Also - those little sticky strips on bags of pasta. Resealable my arse. You think “I’ll try this, maybe it won’t let me down this time” then a week later when you go back, it’s pinged open and is threatening to tip all over the cupboard.

Anything that has a peel-back corner. They do not work! Either it doesn't budge and you have to use a knife or it splits and doesn't fully open.

This. Just why are these so impossible?

meatbaseddessert · 19/10/2023 11:05

Scissors that come packaged in vacuum seal plastic that would survive a direct bomb blast and are impossible to get into without scissors.

I'm buying the fucking scissors because i haven't got scissors you wankers!

Johnson's baby bath products in those stupid teardrop bottles. They look so pretty but try picking up the bottle when your hands are wet (or worse, soapy). Unusable. I love the scent of the baby bedtime bath but don't buy it because the bottle isn't designed to be held by hands.

Any packaging where they've shaped it so you can't keep hold of it easily is stupid. I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head though.

Edited

DP likes to "treat" us to the fancy Candarel sucralose sweetener tablet dispensers sometimes, rather than the own-brand ones (or they're on special offer and temporarily cheaper). Instead of being small flat cuboidal containers, they're enormous ovoid things that are just ever so slightly too big for me to securely grasp and click the clicker with one hand, forever threatening to slip out of my fingers like a wet bar of soap. Of course, with his giant man hands he thinks they're fine, what's the problem, how can a sweetener dispenser be too big? Angry

enchantedsquirrelwood · 19/10/2023 11:08

Oh so much. I often wonder how disabled and elderly people manage to get things open. Even cans can be difficult.

TeeBee · 19/10/2023 11:09

Bloody Tampax that now seem to have regressed to plastic applicators! Why??? For the love of God! They were more environmentally friendly as cardboard and now I pinch my fanny when using them...every single time!! I'm gonna switch brands; they're ridiculous.

toy cars bought on day trip to town for kiddy but you need a bloody screwdriver to get them out the packaging!! wtf!

Just about to say this!!My children are adults now but I still remember the stress!!

Itwasamemoment · 19/10/2023 11:13

Any vacuum packed item !How do the elderly manage?
Also Corner opening food ie bacon.

Screwballs · 19/10/2023 11:16

Bacon.

But basically any thing sealed in the fridge with corner opening that has to be assaulted with a knife to gain access.

PencilsInSpace · 19/10/2023 11:17

Mitchum stick deodorant. Once it has worn down so you can't apply it in the usual manner, half the product is still stuck inside. I have taken to dismantling them (sharp knife needed to cut through the inside plastic bits) and scooping all the lumps into a lidded pot to be applied using my fingers. I get an extra 2-3 weeks' worth doing this.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 19/10/2023 11:18

I can't open jars without releasing the vacuum seal first and I have several ways to do this.
Branston, the bastards, have found a way to stop me by redesigning their jar. The lid on the jar is now so deep that none of my openers can get a grip on it or break the seal. So now I buy own brand not-quite-branston.
It's Not the same! Why don't they want me to eat their pickle?
(See also stupid bacon peel-back corners . And pasta bags that rip in a hundred different directions when I try to open them)

Seeline · 19/10/2023 11:21

Tetra pak cartons where you have to tear the top off to release the contents - 'tinned' tomatoes, custard etc. Just not strong enough to tear the minute strip and always have to use scissors.

Bacon, ham etc with the corner

The plastic/foil cover on a new ketchup/mayo bottle - why do they not have a proper tag to pull like milk bottles? Just those teeny-weeny little bits that have normally been squashed under the thread of the screw top and are impossible to get hold of, let alone pull on to remove the cover.

LiftyLift · 19/10/2023 11:25

All children’s puzzles, toys and games that come in cardboard packaging that wears out after a few uses. Give us a proper box that means we can be used over and over again and means the toys can be passed down. Hungry Hippos, I’m looking at you!

Megablocks have mastered it in their sturdy bags that contain all the pieces without getting worn out.

PurplePanther1 · 19/10/2023 11:27

Cucumbers that are vacuum packed. I struggle to roll the plastic off them. Ehy do cucumbers need any packaging? You can easily wash it before you eat it.

Cecilisacaterpillar · 19/10/2023 11:28

The plastic wrap on cucumbers drives me mad!

Thesearmsofmine · 19/10/2023 11:30

Mitchum cream stick deodorant, the best deodorant for me but so much product waste and it annoys me every time.

Also the jus rol cinnamon swirls and pin au chocolat that come in the cylinders.

Papillon23 · 19/10/2023 11:31

A shout out to Asda - their posh bacon is corner opening...but the corner opening works! Peels off in one go every time. And their bacon is vacuum packed

I really hate plastic films that you peel off that tear into a thousand pieces. And thick heat shrunk plastic you have got to try and slice open but then it becomes like a sharp weapon that's trying to slice you open.

Omg YES! It fits perfectly back in only if you put the pieces back individually and model exactly the way it arrived.

The different versions of Jenga are top of my mind. Rage-inducing

Mygazpachoistoocold · 19/10/2023 11:33

Napolina tins - the company that do chopped tomatoes, chickpeas etc. I stopped buying them after the ring pulls on their tins kept snapping off, which is annoying as they're often on special offer.
I don't think I've had this issue with other brands.

Poppyseed14 · 19/10/2023 11:34

Wild deodorant. So much product left in the packaging.

And capri sun with their environmentally friendly paper straws that aren't capable of puncturing the carton. I've stopped buying them in protest.

BodegaSushi · 19/10/2023 11:35

Wet wipes with the flimsy plastic to cover it back. End up with so many packs of dried out wet wipes because they lose their stickiness and don't stay down

blobby10 · 19/10/2023 11:37

Slightly missing the point of the thread but I love buying bacon from the butcher as they just wrap it in some paper!!

Big bags of sweets or crisps or yoghurt coated raisin type foods that should last a week but always tear down the length of the bag the first time you open it, meaning you have to eat the contents in a day or risk them getting soggy/sticky/tainted with taste from other foods/dusty etc etc Grin

Agree with the bags of pasta/rice and lack of re-sealability as well as 'Tear Here' corners

Caerulea · 19/10/2023 11:39

Really need Heinz to join the rest of the canning industry & make their bloody tins stackable!
